Carson City's Advocates to End Domestic Violence remains strong in time of COVID-19 crisis
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Though we are not able to raise awareness as we normally would, we will be posting daily on our SARA Facebook page, and we hope you will follow us and share our posts to help us reach as many people as possible.
Go here for our SARA Facebook page, and be sure to "Like" it.
Did you know: Every 73 seconds, another American is sexually assaulted. Sexual assault is a pretty taboo topic and has only recently become a publicly discussed form of abuse. We have come a long way in acknowledging different types of sexual assault, what consent really means, and how to diagnose and treat the trauma that many victims experience, but we still have so much work to do, and we can't do it alone!
Want to get involved? Here's how you can help raise awareness:
1) Learn how to be a good support person to survivors of sexual assault (We'll help with this, follow us on Facebook)
2) Share our Facebook posts on your Facebook page to help us reach more people.
3) Wear teal on April 7th for Day of Action — Teal Day. Teal is the color of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, wear it with pride.
4) Wear denim on April 29th and post a photo on Facebook (be sure to tag us in the photo).
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month
Unfortunately, due to the COVID 19 pandemic, our annual Pinwheels for Prevention ceremony has been cancelled. AEDV staff will be planting pinwheels at Classy Seconds and will leave them up all month to help raise awareness for Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Pinwheel represents the bright future that every child deserves, and this message is SO important during these difficult times.
Children in abusive homes are isolated with their abusers and it is up to us, concerned friends, family, and neighbors to look out for our most vulnerable community members. If you see something concerning, report it! Report it to law enforcement or DCFS (883-803-1183) and let them decide if it's worth investigating. If you don't speak up for these children, who will? Also, click here to follow us on our Facebook page for weekly stats, parenting tips, and outreach information during the Month of April.
Advocates to End Domestic Violence staff is still here assisting survivors of domestic violence during this pandemic. Cases of domestic violence are on the rise as victims are trapped in their homes with their abusers, experiencing extreme financial stress and uncertainty. It is more important now than ever before for our crisis hotline, case management, and shelter services to be readily available as victims contact our office.
Our dedicated staff is following more extreme disinfecting procedures, and helping to ensure that our sheltered clients understand the importance of social distancing while living communally, all the while helping to mediate conflicts that arise in being quarantined in a home with women and children you've just met.
The 24-hour crisis hotline is (775) 883-7654.
We are in desperate need of financial donations to help us provide necessities for our clients who have lost their jobs, have been temporarily laid off, etc. If you are fortunate enough to be able to give during this difficult time, click here to donate now.
