The Greenhouse Project in Carson City is hosting its annual Spring Plant Sale this Saturday, May 9, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. It's a great way to help support the organization and pick up plants for your garden.

There will be many varieties of tomatoes, squashes, herbs, greens, peppers, and flowers available. Everything has been grown using organic methods by the hands of students and AmeriCorps volunteers.

The 2015 operating season begins this weekend at Nevada State Railroad Museum. Come on down and take a ride on the Edwards Motorcar Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rides are $4 for Adults; $2 for Children ages 4-11 and museum members; and FREE for Children ages 3 and under. The first Sunday of the month always sees a pancake breakfast at the Elk’s Club; let them take care of the cooking and clean-up!

Have you picked your pony yet? The Kentucky Derby is today, but that is far from the only thing running today. Chili on the Comstock is hosting their inaugural Fun with the Runs 5K Saturday at 10 a.m. The 1926 Edwards Motor Car is running, too, and ready for rides at the Nevada Railroad Museum. The wine walk is always a good time, and with Mother’s Day next weekend, it can’t hurt to peruse the shops before you run out of time to pick the perfect gift.

    Virginia City sizzles with Chili on the Comstock this weekend

    The smell of hot chili will permeate the region as Virginia City, Nev.’s 32nd annual Chili on the Comstock heats up this weekend, May 2 – 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The historic mining town plays host to more than 30 professional and amateur chili cooks as well as hundreds of hungry festival-goers.

    Tickets for Friday's inaugural Carson High School Father-Daughter Cinderella Ball, a fundraiser for CHS clubs, are on sale today, Wednesday, and tomorrow, Thursday, from 2:15 to 3 p.m. in the high school attendance office, said Anglia Golik, CHS teacher, organizer and Senator Square columnist.

    Fuelwood permits around Lake Tahoe Basin begin Wednesday

    The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin the sale of fuelwood permits at the Forest Supervisor’s office at 35 College Drive in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, April 15, 2015. Although weather conditions allow for the early sale of permits, areas to obtain fuelwood will be limited because not all gates and roads are open.

    Governor Colcord House in Carson City listed in State Register of Historic Places

    The Governor Roswell K. Colcord House in Carson City has become the latest addition to the Nevada State Register of Historic Places. The State Register is a list of properties in Nevada that reflect the history and traditions important to Nevadans.

    The Colcord House served as the Carson City residence of Governor Roswell K. Colcord from his election to the Governor’s Office in 1890 to his death in 1939. It is located at 700 West Telegraph. The announcement was made Monday by Nevada's State Historic Preservation Office.

    Elton John, Brad Paisley added to Harveys Lake Tahoe summer concert series

    Harveys Outdoor Summer Concert Series at south shore Lake Tahoe has expanded with the announcement of two fan favorites to the summer 2015 lineup. Sir Elton John and his band return Saturday, Aug. 8 to Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena as part of the “All The Hits” tour. This summer also marks the return of country star Brad Paisley.

    Carson Now reader Theresa Lynn Thornton alerted us that Deaf Pride Week is being recognized at Western Nevada College this week.
    "We have two huge events coming up, one Friday in the Carson Nugget Hall (Open Hands Night, where you can watch people tell stories and sign songs) from 6-8 and Saturday, our big event, at noon for everyone to come enjoy with free pizza drinks bounce house and face painting," said Thornton. "It all benefits our deaf studies program and helps the deaf community come together."

    The 32nd annual Chili on the Comstock once again brings the heat May 2-3 to the Comstock in historic Virginia City, Nev. The historic mining town plays host to more than 30 professional chili cooks and hundreds of revelers participating in the Crawl Back In Time Fireball Saloon Crawl, a sampling of themed beverages from 15 locations.     Carson City sheriff’s weekend log: Jail inmate fight leads to felony battery charge

    A 24-year-old inmate in the Carson City Jail faces a felony charge of battery by a prisoner after a fight inside the detention facility, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

    According to the arrest report, Stig Corrin Strong of Minden fought with another prisoner with Strong determined to be the primary aggressor. Video footage showed that he pushed, punched and choked another inmate.
