Freshman outfielder Bradley Lewis delivered Western Nevada College's second walk-off victory of the 2015 season on Friday afternoon against Utah State University Eastern. Lewis stroked a walk-off double to score Jon Guzman as the Wildcats rallied for a 7-6 baseball victory over the Golden Eagles at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

WNC Softball: Wildcats sweep Colorado Northwestern in doubleheader

Western Nevada College Softball plays host to the Spartans of Colorado Northwestern Community College this weekend for a four game series at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City. The Wildcats came away from Friday's doubleheader, topping CNCC 8-0 and 11-3.

WNC Softball: Wildcats give second-ranked Salt Lake trouble

Western Nevada College's losing softball record certainly can be deceiving. The Wildcats gave second-ranked Salt Lake Community College all it wanted in their Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday at Bruin Field in Taylorsville, Utah.

Salt Lake held off WNC, 7-4, in game two after struggling to a 5-2 victory in the opener. With the sweep, Salt Lake remained in first place in the SWAC at 22-4.

WNC Baseball: Bruins Come Back to Defeat Wildcats

Zac Willis doubled in two runs in the seventh inning and tripled in two more runs in the eighth as Salt Lake City Community College rallied to an 11-6 Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball victory over Western Nevada College on Thursday at Cate Field in West Jordan.

With four Wildcats supplying at least two hits, WNC staked freshman pitcher Matt Young to a 6-1 lead through six innings.

The 32nd annual Chili on the Comstock once again brings the heat May 2-3 to the Comstock in historic Virginia City, Nev. The historic mining town plays host to more than 30 professional chili cooks and hundreds of revelers participating in the Crawl Back In Time Fireball Saloon Crawl, a sampling of themed beverages from 15 locations. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

WNC Softball: Pitching, Power Carries CSI Past Wildcats

Home runs and dominant pitching in the circle propelled fourth-ranked College of Southern Idaho to 12-1 and 12-4 softball victories over Western Nevada College on Saturday in Twin Falls, completing a four-game sweep of the Wildcats.

CSI blasted three home runs that brought home eight of its 12 runs to win the opener in five innings. Kami Merrill (15-3), a sophomore right-hander from Calgary, Alberta, limited the Wildcats to two hits.

WNC Baseball: Coyotes Capitalize on Wildcat Miscues to Take Series Opener

Three late-inning errors snapped a tie and sent College of Southern Nevada to a 5-2 series-opening baseball victory over Western Nevada College on Thursday in Carson City.

The win pulled the Coyotes (8-5) within one game of the first-place Wildcats (9-4) in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings. CSN ace Phil Bickford, the 10th pick in the 2013 Major League Baseball amateur draft, is scheduled to pitch the opening game of Friday's doubleheader set for noon at John L. Harvey Field.

WNC Softball Team Fundraiser Nets Glowing Returns

Western Nevada College’s softball team got glowing results from its annual early Saturday evening 5K Glow Run in Carson City. After adding some after-dinner entertainment to increase the number of participants, the Wildcat Glow Run on Saturday, March 21 attracted more than 100 participants to help raise approximately $5,00 for the softball program.

“It was our best turnout; the theme helped,” said WNC softball coach Leah Wentworth. “Thanks to El Charro Avitia for donating the food. It has added incentive for people to come.”

WNC Softball Splits with Snow College

Western Nevada College Softball split a doubleheader with Snow College Friday afternoon. In the first match-up, WNC fell to Snow College 7-1, Dakota Robinson started in the circle. She went five innings, and was replaced by Kristina George. Robinson took the loss for the Wildcats. In the second game, pitcher Nicole Lesniak started for the Wildcats. She went the distance to earn the win. Final score, 7-4 WNC.

WNC Baseball: Peters, Fox lift Wildcats to doubleheader split

There's no secret why DJ Peters is climbing in the Wildcat batting order. Peters, who was hitting seventh in the lineup earlier in the season, has risen to fifth this week.

After a 3-for-3 performance, including a solo home run, in a 7-1 victory of the opening game of a doubleheader against Colorado Northwestern on Friday in Carson City, who knows where the 6-foot-6 right-handed hitter will wind up. Peters knocked in two runs, stole two bases and scored twice to back the four-hit pitching of Ty Fox.

The Carson Canyons half marathon is slated for Saturday and will kick off a series of three half marathons in as many months.

“Doing a half marathon now is good for training as far as doing something longer for the summer,” said Kevin Bigley, owner of Ascent Physical Therapy in Carson City, which is organizing and sponsoring the runs. “You’re getting a good base in for your running calendar.”

WNC Softball Gets Win from CSI in extra innings

Wildcats Softball opened the 2015 conference season with a triple header against the Golden Eagles of the College of Southern Idaho. The threat of weather looms for the weekend, so getting a jumpstart on the four game series was the goal of Friday's stacked schedule. After dropping the first game 2-11 in five innings, the Wildcats prevailed in the second game, topping CSI 9-8 in overtime.

Corey Pool homered as Western Nevada College slammed five extra-base hits in defeating College of Southern Idaho, 7-4, in its Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball opener Thursday at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.
CSI, however, bounced back to take game two, using a small-ball approach that its counterparts have succeeded with in the past. The Golden Eagles beat out three bunt singles and executed two sacrifice bunts to overcome home runs by Pool and Kody Reynolds in an 8-4 victory.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats win big over Sierra College

Western Nevada College Baseball hosted Sierra College Wolverines of Rocklin, Calif., Tuesday, for their first home game of the 2015 season. The Wildcats improved to 9-7, topping the Wolverines 15-6. Coach DJ Whittemore gave several of his pitchers a chance on the mound.

DJ Peters started for the Western, he was relieved by Cody Kerns in the top of the third. Ty Fox came in to pitch in the fourth, and Kyle Johnson took over in the fifth. Matt Young pitched in the sixth, followed by Thomas Kerr in the seventh and eighth, and Chase Kaplan closed in the ninth. Peters earned the win.

WNC Baseball: First-inning errors undermine Wildcats in Riverside

If the Western Nevada College baseball team intends to win its third straight series to start the season, the Wildcats will need to beat Riverside City College in the teams' final two games this weekend.
Riverside capitalized on four first-inning errors and then rode the pitching of left-hander Austin Sodders to a 8-1 victory over WNC of Carson City on Friday night in Riverside, Calif.

The unbeaten Tigers, ranked eighth in the California Community College Athletic Association preseason poll, scored four unearned runs against WNC sophomore right-hander Max Karnos in the first inning.

WNC Softball: Wildcats Knock Off Third-Ranked Arizona Western

It was a history-making day for the Western Nevada College softball team on Friday in Yuma, Ariz.
The Wildcats upset Great Western Shootout tournament host Arizona Western College, 2-1, and Eastern Arizona College, 11-7, to beat those programs for the first time ever.

WNC also defeated Yavapai College for the second time in a week, winning 8-3 in eight innings.

The victory over third-ranked Arizona Western College is the highest-rated team WNC has ever beaten. To do so, the Wildcats used aggressive baserunning to push across the deciding run in the seventh inning.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats Use Wild Finish to Upset No. 3 Cochise

Nothing short of a wild finish could separate Western Nevada College and Cochise College on the baseball diamond on Friday at Morse Field in Henderson.
Tied at 4 in the 10th inning, the Wildcats parlayed two wild pitches into a come-from-behind 7-4 victory over the third-ranked team in the country.

The Centennial Slug it Out 5/10K is part of the Winter Trail Series offered by Ascent Runs. Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10 at Centennial Park, this run will get your blood pumping and your New Year's resolution off to a great start.

You'll want to park north of the baseball fields, past the tennis courts. Look for the blue truck and pop-up tents. It is predominantly a single track trail with some technical rocky sections. This is wild horse country. If you don't run into some wild horses, you will definitely run into some wild horse manure.

Hundreds of Carson City runners hit the road before dinner at Thanksgiving Turkey Trot

Dozens of families made up hundreds of runners and walkers of all ages who met under sunny skies at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City this Thanksgiving Day for the 2014 Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot.

The 8K, 5K and Kids Gobble Wobble Fun Run, hosted by St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School, was designed for those who wanted to get some exercise ahead of the parades, pies, football games and big Thanksgiving Day meals. See the video below.

The Friends of the Library Holiday Craft Sale will be held in the Browsers Corner Book Store from Monday, Nov. 24 through Saturday, Dec. 20. Crafts which are handmade and donated by Friends of the Library will be displayed all throughout the store.

Saturday's 5K Color Fun Run Canceled

The Carson High School 5K Color Fun Run planned for Saturday at the high school has been canceled due to construction in the school parking lot that could cause safety issues for runners.

Nevada Day 2014: 25th Annual Nevada Day Classic Run/Walk

More than 400 runners and walkers of all shapes and sizes — and even attire — hit the streets of Carson City every year for the annual Nevada Day Classic 8K Run and 2 Mile Run/Walk. The event, organized by the Tahoe Mountain Milers running club and its members in cooperation with many sponsors has supported many community organizations over the years. This year’s event will benefit Guide Dogs for the Blind.
