In this week's edition of It's Your City, host Cortney Bloomer sits down with EJ Maldonado, president of the Tahoe Mountain Milers. The two discuss the half marathons coming up in less than a month and EJ's amazing story of how he went from 300 pounds to becoming an ultra-marathon runner and fitness advocate.

On September 13, Carson High School will open its doors a little wider and longer for a back to school night like no other. Open House, Open Hearts is a community event focused on building bridges to local services for teens and their families, increasing parent and guardian engagement at CHS, and celebrating the community, creativity and diverse talents of Carson City.

Around two dozen runners and walkers remembered the victims of a mass shooting in Carson City that happened six years ago Wednesday in which five people died, including three Nevada National Guardsmen.

Registration is now open for the Nevada Day Classic, an 8K run and 2 mile run/walk that brings together hundreds of runners and walkers just prior to the Nevada Day Parade in historic Carson City.

With the cancellation of the 19-year long tradition of fireworks over Labor Day in South Lake Tahoe due to budget constraints, the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority and other local businesses have pulled together to present a full menu of things to do on the South Shore from a laser light show to concerts and a carnival.

Start the day at the Silver Dollar Car Classic and you can get your fill of shiny chrome and breakfast, too; the Kiwanis will be serving up pancakes until 10:30 a.m. The Downtown Carson City Wine Walk has been infiltrated by the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival. Several of the stops will be hosting musicians, in addition to vino.

After a tough 10-4 loss to El Paso, the Aces looked to rebound in a hurry Saturday, July 15th in Greater Nevada Field. With a small sample size of outings under their belts, starting pitchers Matt Koch (Reno) and Kyle Lloyd (El Paso) took the mound hoping to break the 1-1 tie in the four-game series.

Take it easy today, that’s what Sundays are for. An afternoon porch party at the historic Genoa Bar combines live music by Deception and slushy rum runners. Dutch oven cooking is a camp-time favorite, and the rangers at Mormon Station State Park will be giving a demonstration on how easy and delicious it can be. What to do, what to do? That’s the question that starts most every weekend. If you’ve got kids, test their mettle at the annual Capitol City Triathlon. Open to kids of all ages, they will bike, run, and swim their way to the finish line. The third annual Sassabration event kicks off with a multi-colored, costume bike parade from the Brewery Arts Center to the celebration at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint. Multiple bands, vendors, non-profit booths, free swimming at the Carson Hot Springs, not to mention the yummy food and drink available make this a not-to-be-missed festival.

What are you in the mood for? The Third and Curry Farmers Market is always a great place to start off your weekend. Kids won’t mind getting up early for the Young Eagle airplane flights at the Carson City Airport – they are free of charge for kids 8 – 17, you just need to be on time for registration. The Annual Chili Cook-off returns to Glen Eagles this weekend; with live music, a craft fair, and lots of yummy stuff to eat, raising money for Honor Flight has never tasted so good. There are many aspects that go into organizing an endurance race — the logistics of the course, permits, lottery registration, aid stations and more. But for George Ruiz, director of the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Run, his overarching motivation is helping the individual runner find the strength to cross the finish line.

After a 4-3 comeback victory, the Reno Aces and Tacoma Rainiers faced off Friday for the second time in the four game series.

With a league leading record of 45-27, the Reno Aces continued their 8 game homestand Thursday, June 22, against the Tacoma Rainiers, an Affiliate of the MLB team, Seattle Mariners.

Planes, trains, and automobiles take over Carson City this weekend. Steampunk ‘N’ Trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum features train rides, fun costumes, food trucks and more. You’ll find two car shows in town – the Party at the Pavilion as part of the Nevada State Fair and the Carson City Downtown Revival Car Show at the Carson Nugget. The third annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon, presented by Epic Tahoe Adventures, will return to Stateline, Nev., on Saturday, June 17, 2017.

The Tahoe Mountain Miler running club will be hosting a training run for the up coming Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs. This training run will take place Sunday June 11th starting at 7:00AM at the Western Nevada College parking lot in Carson City.

The trails are are permitted by Carson City Parks and Recreation & Open Space Department and the Humbolt-Toiyabe USFS.

With 6,387 anxious fans in attendance, the Reno Aces faced off against the Las Vegas 51s for the third time in their four-game series at Greater Nevada Field in Reno.

If you happen to be up very early on Saturday morning, you may just see some runners in the pre-dawn hours. The Reno-Tahoe Odyssey, a 178 mile relay, passes through Carson City on its way to Virginia City. A huge congratulations goes out to the Class of 2017; the Carson High graduates will get their diplomas today. In a win or go home situation, the Carson High Senators returned home Wednesday to to Ron McNutt field in Carson City to face the Damonte Ranch Mustangs. It was a must-win game to stay alive in the NIAA 4A Northern Baseball playoffs.

The weather peaked at the perfect time for a season-changing first round matchup in Galena between the Carson Senators and Galena Grizzlies. Both teams looked prepared for a duel on the mound, as pitchers Bryce Moyle (Carson) and Nick Brown (Galena) faced off with hopes of bringing their teams to victory.

After a three game roundabout in California and going 1-2 in the process, the Carson High School Senators returned home to Ron McNutt Field Tuesday in Carson City looking to rebound against the Hug Hawks of Reno.

It may be April’s Fools Day, but the fun going on around town is no joke. Get your blood pumping with the Carson Canyon Half Marathon (or Half/Half Marathon if you want something shorter.) It’s Wine Walk weekend, and with the sunny day you have no reason to stay home.
