Senators baseball recap: Carson splits series vs Bishop Manogue with walkoff win
An 8-7 loss to Galena put the Carson High Senators' playoff aspirations on the line Saturday during a two game double header with Bishop Manogue at Ron McNutt Field in Carson City.
And with the season drawing to a close, every game requires Carson's full effort and attention to make the postseason.
Starting pitchers Bryce Moyle for the Senators and Jonas Whitten of Bishop Manogue took the mound ready to pitch the seams off the ball in an intense matchup. Right out of the gate, the Miners' offense threatened to score with runners in scoring position during the first inning. But Moyle kept his mind clear of any potential distraction and escaped the inning scoreless.
While Whitten closed the bottom half of the first inning with ease, Bishop Manogue kept the pressure on Moyle once again in the second inning. Moyle squashed any offensive opportunity for the Miners, as he struck out the next two Bishop batters to conclude the top half of the second inning.
Whitten also silenced a potential scoring opportunity for Carson, as he escaped the third inning with 2 strikeouts despite a leadoff walk to Kyle Glanzman.
Both offenses had a tough time finding their groove against Whitten and Moyle, as the game remained scoreless through three innings.
Bishop Manogue broke out of the ice cold streak at the plate with a 2-run fourth inning highlighted by Calvin Bailey and Dalton Scolari RBI singles. The Senators also ended the hitless streak at the plate, as a sacrifice RBI by Kahle Good cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into the 5th inning.
Josh Rolling tacked on another for Bishop Manogue with an RBI single, giving them a comfortable 3-1 lead heading into the late innings.
Whitten remained in the zone, as he buzz sawed through the Senator batting order in 1, 2, 3 fashion to conclude the 5th inning. With the game still in reach, Moyle's efforts remained sky high, as he struck out the side leaving the game up for grabs.
The Miners put the game out of reach in the 7th inning, as they capitalized on 5 runs highlighted by Carson errors and RBI's by: Calvin Bailey, CJ Hires, Josh Rolling and Dalton Scolari.
The Senators ultimately imploded late, in a 8-1 loss to end the first game of the double header.
After the game Moyle gave his thoughts on the mound.
"Even if we score a ton of runs out there, I cannot allow 3 runs in only 6 innings. That is a team I should be able to hold to 0 runs and give the team a better chance to win," he said.
For Bishop Manogue, Jonas Whitten pitched a complete 7 innings, giving up only 1 earned run on 2 hits and 4 walks with 6 strikeouts.
Calvin Bailey finished with 2 hits and 3 RBI's, Josh Rolling finished 1 for 3 with a single and 2 RBI's, Dalton Scolari went 2 for 4 with 2 hits and 2 RBI's. CJ Hires also added an RBI in the blowout victory.
On the other end of the spectrum, Bryce Moyle pitched a full 6 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 6 hits and 2 walks with 8 strikeouts. Cole McDannald and Colby Zemp came in relief. Jared Barnard finished 2 for 3 with 2 singles. Kahle Good added the only RBI of the game for Carson.
In the second game of the double header, starting pitchers Jared Barnard (Carson) and Angelo Reviglio (Bishop Manogue) looked to conclude the 2 game series with a win for their respective teams.
The Miners struck early during the first inning, as a double by CJ Hires with the bases loaded drove in 2 runs to get their offense rolling with a 2-0 lead. The Senators answered the bottom half of the same inning, as singles by Abel Carter, Moyle, and Good loaded the bases. A wild pitch by Reviglio advanced the runners, trimming the Miners lead 2-1 to conclude the first inning of play.
Both Barnard and Reviglio kept the game scoreless all the way through the 5th inning creating quite the duel. As both pitched through many tough situations, they kept calm and collected to escape the inning with both offenses threatening to score.
Carson failed to capitalize on a chance to tie the game in the 5th inning with Jesse Lopez at second, as the lead drifted back into the Miners' grasp heading into the 6th inning of play.
Kyle Glanzman, who came in for relief in the 6th, faced adversity right away, with an RBI single by Rylan Charles that put Bishop Manogue up 3-1. A wild pitch by Glanzman with runners in scoring position tacked on yet another run in the Miners' favor 4-1.
Faced with a 3 run defecit with 2 innings left to play, the Senators came on the verge of a magical late inning rally.
With runners on 2nd and 3rd, a sacrifice RBI by Landon Truesdale along with an RBI single from Jared Barnard capped off a 2 run, 3 hit inning for Carson as they made the score 4-3.
Heading into the final inning of play, Glanzman kept the bases empty to give the Senator offense another chance. With runners on the corners, a Carson comeback was in full swing when it mattered most.
As an RBI single from Kahle Goode tied the game 4-4, Truesdale's walkoff RBI single gave Carson the improbable 5-4 victory leaving the home crowd in awe of their clutch performance.
After the game, assistant coach Matthew Morgan shared his thoughts on the home victory for the Senators.
"For us, this is the biggest win of the year," Morgan said. "With the season coming to an end, we desperately needed this win and we got it."
Truesdale also spoke of his approach at the plate with the game on the line.
"I was just looking for an outside pitch that I can drive to the right side of the field," he said. "I was looking to throw my hands on the outside and hopefully make some contact, which I did."
For Bishop Manogue, Angelo Reviglio pitched a full 5 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks with 5 strikeouts in the loss. CJ Hires went 1 for 2 with a double and 2 RBI's; Rylan Charles also added an RBI. Joseph Damonte, Dalton Scolari and Paul Lawson each had 1 hit. Jared Barnard pitched a full 5 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 5 walks with 5 strikeouts in the win.
