UPDATE 10:55AM: Nevada Highway Patrol is again closing a portion of Highway 50 at Lake Tahoe after briefly re-opening. According to dispatch, conditions are slick through the area and a trooper was nearly struck by a vehicle.

Highway 50 from Round Hill to Cave Rock at Lake Tahoe was closed Friday morning due to multiple crashes caused by icy roads.

State Route 207 Kingsbury Grade from the summit down to the Carson Valley floor will be closed to traffic "through the coming weeks" due to a sinkhole caused by an eroding drainage pipe under the roadway, the Nevada Department of Transportation said Tuesday.

A long line of shoppers waited outside the new FoodMaxx grocery store at 3325 Highway 50 East in Carson City Wednesday morning, hoping to qualify for one of 200 free bags filled with groceries to kick off the grand opening celebration of the supermarket chain's 54th store.

Thanks to those who came forward and helped, the “CLOSED” sign has been taken down and Catmandu will re-open in a limited capacity starting on Friday, June 3.

Ready for the weekend, Carson City? The weather should hold up on Saturday, but no promises on Sunday. Hit the slopes if you are so inclined, several Tahoe resorts have opened for the season. Runners should head out to Washoe Lake State Park for the first of the Be Bold, Run in the Cold series sponsored by Ascent Runs. The Kyburz Fire in El Dorado County is 30 percent contained as of Friday morning and has burned around 200 acres. Highway 50 remains in both directions.

Fire officials say opening Highway 50 is a priority and are looking at re-opening at least one lane by late Friday afternoon or evening once safety concerns are mitigated.

The Kyburz Fire is located in the canyon of the South Fork of the American River, west of the community of Kyburz. The fire is currently in the lower half of the canyon east of Whitehall on both sides of the American River.

On June 19, the League invites the public to our Summer Kickoff party, featuring the grand re-opening of our Fritzi & David Huntington Environmental Education Center in South Lake Tahoe. Featuring cutting-edge interactive displays, our Education Center’s overhaul will improve our ability to educate and engage the public about how to protect Lake Tahoe and the threats facing the Lake.

Looks like our rain and snow dances finally did the trick, but don’t let the weather scare you away from downtown this weekend. The Downtown Business Association’s Wine Walk, Artsy Fartsy’s Annual Jewelry Sale, Just Brew It’s Annual Thirsty Boy Home Brew Competition, and Family Fun Day at the Nevada State Museum are all hoping to lure you out of your home. Leave your ice skates at home though, the Arlington Square ice rink has closed for the season.

This week’s senior spotlight is on senior Challen Wright. Challen currently has a 4.43 weighted GPA and has straight A’s in his challenging course load of AP and honors courses.

In addition to being an excellent student, Challen is also heavily involved in theater both at Carson High School and in the community. Challen has been a part of nearly every Carson High School production since his freshman year, including behind the scenes as the stage manager of the most recent play, The House of Bernarda Alba.

Library Director Sena Loyd announces the grand re-opening of the Carson City Library and its newly repurposed auditorium, now known as The Digitorium. The event will be held Thursday, Oct. 23, from noon to 7 p.m. The public is invited to explore reconfigured spaces at the library’s 900 North Roop Street main branch.
