Is your resolution to run more? Try the Centennial Slug it Out 5/10K

Event Date:
January 10, 2015 - 8:30am

The Centennial Slug it Out 5/10K is part of the Winter Trail Series offered by Ascent Runs. Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10 at Centennial Park, this run will get your blood pumping and your New Year's resolution off to a great start.

You'll want to park north of the baseball fields, past the tennis courts. Look for the blue truck and pop-up tents. It is predominantly a single track trail with some technical rocky sections. This is wild horse country. If you don't run into some wild horses, you will definitely run into some wild horse manure.

Riding In The Fog...

Billy Don Wainscott-Riding in the Fog

Billy Don Wainscott is the racetrack outrider at the nearest racetrack to Carson City — Cal Expo in Sacramento. It's a very tough and sometimes dangerous job. Billy Don has to work under many types of weather conditions...His job is vital to the safety of harness drivers their racehorses, and everyone trackside. A panicky horse pulling a empty sulky at 35 mph is very, very dangerous.

Is Nevada missing the boat?

The last couple of weeks have been quite busy news wise with all the repercussions from Pres. Obama's legal actions regarding immigration. We've all heard people echo their sentiments on both sides of this issue. My question is, why is Nevada not joining the Texas led effort to file suit on the Obama administration along with so many other states? Nevada's silence in this arena is disgusting. President Obama with the stroke of his pen has successfully done what many other anti-American, anti-capitalist and race baiters alike have failed to do since reconstruction.

Reply to Peter (good grief...!) Hennessey

I can't help but agree with Peter Hennessey when he says he sees a "deep, irreconcilable mental and psychological divide between the two Parties (sic)." That is manifestly the case.

In 2010 I volunteered for Rory Reid's campaign and made the mistake of mentioning that I had been a registered Republican for 34 years. Predictably I was given a list of supposedly "persuadable" Republicans to canvas, which I dutifully did.

Election Day poem courtesy of the Carson City Chamber

Today is the end of the negative ads,
You know those that make you so mad!

The government you get is the government you deserve,
So get out today and make your voice heard!

Reply to Peter Hennessey

Peter Hennessey seems to have trouble with the word Democratic. Sadly he's not alone in that. It's an affliction that's been going around on the extreme right since the days of Joseph McCarthy. Please note that I'm talking about the extreme right, not the Republican party of the past, which once had a perfectly sane and civic-minded mainstream. I was a registered Republican myself for 34 years, but never had any trouble understanding that Democrat is a noun and Democratic is an adjective. I only have a bachelor's degree, but have no trouble distinguishing between nouns and adjectives.

Letter: DA Rombardo wrong, misrepresents facts

For several months, I have tried to show voters what kind of a District Attorney I would be with a principled, professional, hard-working campaign.

That’s why it was disappointing to read Mr. Rombardo’s letter. He’s entitled to an opinion on the race. And, although it’s not my style, if he chooses to express his opinion as an attack against me rather than approval of my opponent, that’s up to him.

But he doesn’t get to be untruthful.

Mountain Biking to Virginia City

Now that Autumn has arrived, it’s a great time to explore the areas east of Carson City. These trails and back roads can be impassable in the winter, muddy in the Spring, and too hot during the Summer. This time of year, though, the dry conditions and mild temperatures make it the perfect time to go. One of our favorite Fall rides is the off-road route up to Virginia City via the American Flat Toll Road. With the area’s fun and lively Old West history, this ride has started to become an annual event.
