September 11, 2001 is burned into our collective memory. At 8:30 a.m. this morning there will be a memorial service at the 9/11 Memorial in Mills Park where an I-beam from the fallen towers now serves as a reminder. Even if you cannot make it to the ceremony, please take a moment of silence to remember.

Saddlehorn Road will be open to local traffic only and there will be limited access during night hours. Detours will be signed.

There's a 5K Remembrance Run in Carson City, a rib cook-off in Sparks, a farm-to-fork festival culinary festival and fireworks at South Lake Tahoe, the Cantaloupe Festival in Fallon, the Comstock Community Rummage Sale in Silver City and the Great Civil War Days Camp at Virginia City.

Don’t miss out on a trip to Virginia City via the Virginia and Truckee Steam Train: locals get a discount on Sundays when they book online. Ormsby Post Acute Care is hosting a classic car show for their residents, so if you have an automobile that fits the bill, please head on over. The Minden-Tahoe Airport is the home to Aviation Roundup Air Show this weekend. You won’t want to miss the USAF Thunderbird Flight Team. Also on some fierce wheels this Sunday are the Carson Victory Rollers. Our roller derby team is hosting a scrimmage and collecting donations of school supplies at the Community Center.

An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.

Over the next two weeks you’ll have a plethora of melody to choose from at venues throughout town. Enjoy an outdoor concert at Third and Carson with Drinking with Clowns. Sassafras is thrilled to grab Groove Session for a show; they’re usually off touring. Mo’z Motley Blues will give you a reason to dance at Living the Good Life. Bright and early Saturday at 8:00 a.m. kids lined up to begin the triathlon where they must complete a swim portion, a bike riding portion and a running portion of the race.

Submitted by editor on Thu, 07/23/2015 - 12:55pmNevada Humane Society is issuing a big public thanks to Dick Campagni’s Carson City Toyota Scion for generously donating a 2015 Toyota Corolla as the grand prize for the annual Duck Race and Festival set for Sunday, August 23 in Reno.
On race day, 30,000 bright yellow rubber ducks will race down the Truckee River to raise money and awareness for homeless pets. The first duck — not necessarily the fastest duck — to reach the finish line and enter the official duck trap will be the grand prize winner and can walk away with the Toyota Corolla that night.

Hit up the Nevada State Railroad Museum for rides on the Steam Train. Mills Park has a much smaller train to ride and plenty of room to run, play, and picnic. Watch the kittens play at Petsmart: SPCA is hosting a kitten party for adoptable pets. A concert with the Mark Sexton Band at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch is a great way to end the weekend.

The Ghost Walk returns: meet behind the Firkin and Fox for some local haunted history. Teens will enjoy a ‘Night at the Library’ with pizza and games. And as always, the Nevada State Railroad Museum beckons: this week with rides on the Steam Train available.

South Lake Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic to celebrate the 1950s and fins July 24-25

The main July 24-25 event will highlight boats manufactured in the 1950s and any boats with fins, which are not exclusive to the 1950s as many first generation fiberglass boats as well as some metal race boats had fins. These beauties will be joined by all classic, vintage or antique boats.
