Foolin' the Big Fish: Record Mackinaw caught and released at Lake Tahoe

The sky was gradually beginning to get light in the east when I very quietly began to row my small, inflatable raft away from the Cave Rock boat launch on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe.

Just moments before, Elaine and I had neatly stowed our lunch, drinks, fishing poles, reels, tackle box, net, battery-operated fish finder and video camera into the bottom of the raft.

Sierra-at-Tahoe reports 8 feet after storms

Checking in with Sierra-at-Tahoe, bottomless is the word of the day. The resort reports a mountain of new snow, as La Niña has lived up to her name graciously delivering the biggest storm of 2011.

The resort reports up to 8 feet of snow and counting, so make sure you wear you pole straps or you might not find them till the spring.

You'll feel confident when you huck those tricks you weren't brave enough to throw on hard pack. Today is the day with the resort filled with pillow soft landings.

Garcia, Childers make cut in tough pole vault field at Northern 4A Regional prelims

In previewing the Northern 4A Regional Track and Field Championships, there might not be a more loaded event when it comes to sheer depth than the boys pole vault.

Seven athletes have cleared 13-9 or better -- including the Carson High tandem of Eric Garcia and Cameron Childers -- and on Saturday a jump of 12-6 was needed to advance past the regional prelims at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno. Garcia and Childers both made their attempts at 12-6 to qualify for the field of nine vaulters in the finals.

Of Freeways and Doomed Houses

After yesterday's article about the freeway, and how Colorado Street was closing permanently on Monday, I got to thinking more about this final phase of the freeway. The Nevada Appeal today says that construction indeed is starting on Monday, and will continue in bits and pieces for the next two years. The first thing to go will be Clearview Drive, which will be closed for an extended time while a new bridge is built.

Carson boys cap day with 4x400 relay gold medal run

There's always something special about winning the 4x400-meter relay at the end of a track and field meet. A year ago, the Carson High girls celebrated when they won the 4x400 at the Fallon Elks Invitational, and on Saturday, the Carson boys took their turn when the quartet of Taylor Bradshaw, David McMasters, Brandon Buonacorsi and Nick Schlager won to cap off their day at the 37th annual Fallon invite at Churchill County High's Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.
