Headed into Thursday, April 11, 2019 we welcome Carson City to another day where weather forecasters say there's a chance of rain and maybe even a few snow showers mixed in. Beyond the weather we're looking at a blockbuster day and night filled will activities throughout town. From library presentations, a TV show casting call at the Carson Nugget, an afternoon hike, to a train history presentation, a book signing at the Brewery Arts Center, a CHS theater performance and the Carson City movie screening premier of "The Mustang" filmed at the historic Nevada State Prison, there's something for everyone. CARSON CITY — Native American artist Melissa Melero-Moose finds inspiration for her mixed media creations from the landscape and culture of the Northern Paiute of the Great Basin.

“Willows, tules, cattails, and pine nuts are all very important staples to the Paiute people, being sources of food, shelter, and implements made with artistic intention,” she said. “I consider these works to be a perspective of my tribe and culture through the eyes of a Native woman, mother and artist.”

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management confirmed Thursday that its staff conducted a roundup Tuesday of what the agency determined to be "nuisance" wild horses that had been reported the previous week in the Dayton area and plan to take the rest Friday, Aug. 3.

After horse troughs for the Fish Springs wild horses were destroyed, resulting in $1,400 worth of damage, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's assistance in identifying the people involved in this felony destruction of property.

Warm afternoon temperatures are expected around the Carson City region through Thursday, with a cool down to possibly below average temperatures by the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Carson City’s Deputy Director of Emergency Management, Stacey Belt, has a couple of very special Spinoni Italiano dogs. One of them, as Stacey puts it — a bearded Italian girl with bushy eyebrows named Adele, will be competing in the famous Westminster dog show in February.  

UPDATE: 1:01PM: The Holiday Fire burning southeast of Gardnerville amidst burn scars of previous fires in the Preacher Mine area is now about 55 acres in size and moving slowly through grass, pinion and juniper, Douglas County has said in a press release Friday.
Access is difficult and resource availability is a challenge, the county said.
Hand crews are on order, while one helicopter from the Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) will be making water bucket drops on the fire.

The 2017 pine nut harvest season kicks off on lands managed by the Nevada Bureau of Land Management and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Both agencies are working together to ensure the public is safely harvesting pine nuts and aware of the regulations.

UPDATE 9:55AM: The Lyons Fire burning in the Pine Nut Mountains northeast of Sunrise Pass in Douglas County has grown to 1,176 acres, according to Sierra Front.

A fire that began Tuesday afternoon southeast of Stagecoach in Lyon County exploded to 1,100 acres overnight, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.

Muscle Powered Evening Conditioning Hike Program are evening hikes of 4 to 6 miles in length with elevation gain, sometimes over 500 feet and usually on single track trail. The evening hike will usually be 1 1/2 hour duration or more.
