Enjoy the last few days of summer as fall is around the corner. Today is Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018. Today brings the second and final volunteer training event at the Nevada State Museum, morning and afternoon hikes and walks, a rally at the capital, a fundraiser at Mills Park, plenty of art exhibits and more.

A family has organized an event to support a member of their family, Jesus Perez Sanchez, who is being treated for leukemia. It will be a picnic in Mills Park on Tuesday, Sept. 18. The food will be all-Mexican and the event will run from 11 am to 7 pm. Tickets are $5, but all donations will be welcomed.

Don’t let finding something fun for Labor Day be laborious, just keep reading. Virginia City hosts a noontime parade to celebrate. You’ll want to stick around as the Comstock Civil War Reenactors wage a “Battle for ‘C’ Street.” Join your neighbors at the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for the annual Interfaith Potluck Picnic and food drive for Friends in Service Helping (FISH).

Time for some Sunday holiday adventure. The Carson Nugget has something special tonight, a Van Halen Tribute Band plays two concerts in their upstairs ballroom. For a lazy afternoon in the shade, you’ll find live music on the porch of the Genoa Bar. The Tahoe Orchestra brings their annual 9/11 Memorial Concert to St. Gall’s Church in Gardnerville. It’s nice that the beginning of the school year is almost immediately rewarded with a three-day weekend. North Tahoe Arts will present an afternoon of food, fun, music and local art at its annual Monet's Table Luncheon and Art Sale from Noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16 at the Gatekeeper's Museum, 130 West Lake Boulevard, Tahoe City, Calif.

North Tahoe Arts has been a creative force and an educational resource for the visual arts in the North Tahoe area since 1990. As a non-profit organization, North Tahoe Arts’ success depends on the support from our local community. Monet's Table is the group's largest annual event/fundraiser.

In the fourth fire call of the day, Carson City Fire Department responded Tuesday night to a brush fire at the Stewart Conservation prison area on Snyder Avenue.

The Interfaith Community of Carson City will host the 10th annual interfaith potluck picnic and food drive on the lawn of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Monday, Sept. 3, from 4 to 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to share food, conversation, music, and fun activities with community members of all faiths.

Silver City is wrapping up summer in style with a day of fun in the park on Saturday, Sept. 1. A rummage sale to benefit Silver City Arts will begin at 9 a.m. and an afternoon and evening of live music will run 3 to 8 p.m. Starting at 2:30 beer, wine and soda will be for sale to benefit the Silver City School House and future music events.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Fire restrictions on National Forest System lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin began Friday, August 17 and will remain in effect through Nov. 5.

CARSON CITY — Increased fuels due to the wet winter and spring, drying vegetation, high fuel loading, and increasing daytime temperatures have prompted the Bridgeport and Carson Ranger Districts on the Humbolt-Toiyabe National Forest to announce the implementation of fire restrictions beginning Saturday, August 4.

SILVER SPRINGS, Nev. — Fort Churchill State Historic Park is offering a variety of ranger-led programs during the month of August. Programs highlight the area’s rich history and abundant natural resources.

Yeah, it’s hot out there, but it’s the area happenings that are sizzling. The Carson City Fair at Fuji Park offers a plethora of entertainment for all ages including tractor pulls, a carnival, and farm animals. Under the shade of the Mills Park cottonwoods, you’ll have all day to peruse the varied vehicles in the annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The sun will come out tomorrow, but it’s the stars that are coming out tonight for the free Levitt Amp Concert at the Brewery Arts Center.

Six months after the doomed Kinkead building was finally demolished, the promised park featuring two grassy sections, a few shade trees, picnic tables, and desert landscaping in its old spot at 505 East King Street is complete.

In a return engagement, Sacramento area band, Todd Morgan and the Emblems, will bring 50s, 60s and Rockabilly style music to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, July 26.

Capital City Arts Initiative has just installed a new exhibit in the Community Development downtown featuring work from UNR Students. Summer fun is heating up! Let the kids burn off some energy at the Kids Triathlon at Mills Park. You’ll find all the colors of the rainbow, plus great music and fun times, at the Festival of Unity and Community: Sassabration. Get your grub on at the annual Nevada Honor Flight Chili Cook-off at Glen Eagles, and make sure to check out the craft vendors. The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation will present Community Service Awards for year 2018 recipients in a brief ceremony on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Mills Park.

Time to get July off to a fun start. The downtown Wine Walk is a great way to spend the day exploring new shops, galleries, and restaurants. If you’re feeling competitive, head down to the Carson Mall for their watermelon and hot dog eating contests. The summer concerts at the Brewery Arts Center continue with a singer/songwriter showcase.

Milton Merlos will bring flamenco guitar music to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 pm, Thursday, July 12.

Milton Merlos, who plays in the Spanish Flamenco style, is a native of Boston. Merlos started playing the guitar at age twelve, and began playing professionally at sixteen. Travels to Spain instilled a love for the Spanish Flamenco style of playing. Now a professional musician with eighteen years of experience, he lives part-time in western Nevada.

What a week. I hope you’ve had the chance to catch your breath from Independence Day, we’ve got a wine walk on its way tomorrow. Tonight, head down to McFadden Plaza at Third and Carson.
