Spring has sprung, but apparently Mother Nature didn’t get the memo. Join the Carson Victory Rollers at the Carson Mall and take part in an indoor wine walk and rummage sale. Help Hot Spot Yoga and Fitness for Life celebrate their grand opening with free classes, health vendors, a 5K run, and more. Hit the dance floor with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; their monthly dance party is held in the Grand Ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center. What’s this? A weekend with no snow in sight? That’s the best news I’ve heard in months. Welcome to the wrestlers and swimmers who are in town for their respective tournaments: you’ll find other fun things on this list to occupy your downtime. It’s a St. Patty’s celebration in Virginia City this weekend with the parade, Rocky Mountain Oyster Fest, and Ball Buster Saloon Crawl. Bragging rights are on the line at the Sixth Annual Thirsty Boy Homebrew Competition sponsored by Just Brew It. You’ll get a sneak peek at the soon-to-open Shoe Tree Brewery if you attend the award ceremony.

Virginia City adjusts itself, prepares for kicks at 26th Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry, St. Patrick's parade

The play on words are endless for Virginia City’s 26th annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry, taking place March 11, 2017 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the heart of the historic mining town. The “oysters” consumed at this festival are the land variety, meaning bull or sheep testicles.

Carson City family welcomes home their hero, soldier

Nothing could rain on Robert Glass’s parade today, not even a steady drizzle coating the tarmac at Reno Tahoe International Airport (RTIA) Friday afternoon as his plane touched down from Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas.

Anglers to ring in 2017 at annual Topaz fishing opener

If you’re looking for something to do on New Year’s Day other than sitting on the couch watching football, you should try heading out to the season opener at Topaz Lake. The lake has been closed to fishing since September 30, but it will be open for fishing again on Jan. 1 in one of Nevada's more unique ways to celebrate New Year's Day.

A mighty Ho! Ho! brought bright eyes and wide smiles by the dozens Saturday as Santa Claus made his way though the capital city after sunset, carried not by sleigh but patrol vehicles in a caravan led by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Reserve Organization.

The Downtown Carson City Santa Claus parade slated for today, Saturday, has been canceled due to the wind and rain, said Downtown 2020 organizer Doreen Mack. Santa Claus, however, will be inside at the Rocking and Rolling Store at Telegraph Square beginning at 11 a.m.

Brace yourself, Carson City. We could be in for some wet and windy weather this weekend. The more adventurous of you will be participating in the Be Bold, Run in the Cold ‘Run with Rudolph’ 5/10K near Western Nevada College. If you’d rather be indoors, the Carson Mall is hosting a Holiday Craft Fair, and at noon will celebrate the grand opening of Ogres-Holm Pottery. Celebrate a Country Christmas with Mary Kaye and the Kaye Sisters in Genoa or get your Celtic fix at the Brewery Art Center with a performance by County Clarke. You better watch out, you better not cry. You better not pout, either, because Santa Claus is coming to town Saturday, Dec. 10 during the Olde Time Christmas Santa Parade in downtown Carson City.

Saturday, Dec. 3: Things to do in Carson City and beyond

I hope you got your fill of naps last weekend because this weekend is chock full of fun to be had for all. You can Wine Walk until you Holiday Crawl downtown. Take your pick of craft shows in town. Kids won’t want to miss the Santa Train at the State Railroad Museum or one of the two performances of ‘The Peanutcracker’ at the Community Center. Whether you’d like to spend the days indoors or out, there is something for all ages in the Carson City area this weekend.

Christmas on the Comstock this Saturday in Virginia City

Virginia City’s annual holiday celebration, Christmas on the Comstock, kicks off this Saturday, Dec. 3 with The Grinch Made Me Do It Saloon Crawl, a Parade of Lights and the Christmas in the Sierra Comstock Cowboys concert at Piper’s Opera House.

Mac the Naw Sierra fishing report: Mountain lakes freeze but not enough for safe ice fishing

Hello fellow anglers, Wishing you a warm and a happy holiday fishing season. Although many areas in our local area have closed for the season, we still have plenty of options to keep on fishing. The lakes in the higher altitudes have started to freeze and ice fishing will be upon us soon. I ask anglers to resist the urge to venture out on lakes and ponds until we have at least eight inches of solid ice.

Senator Square: Carson High counselors say now is the time to prepare for college

Though there are still six months of school remaining, Carson High School’s counselors say that now is the time for seniors to kick it into gear to go to college. Applications for college are due now and in the next few weeks, and scholarship opportunities begin flooding in during January.

This Veterans’ Day several local and national businesses have some special offers for you: free food, drinks, and even pet adoptions. You’ll find them all listed here. It’s also a Friday, so Carson City has some fun packed into our little valley. Enjoy live music at Westside Pour House or Living the Good Life. It’s a DJ Dance Party at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

Horses gather at the refurbished watering fountain during Nevada Day Parade

It didn't take long after the recent refurbishing of the horse trough watering fountain before units from the Carson City, Washoe, Reno, and Sparks law enforcement units stopped by to water the horses during the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday. This was a wonderful flashback to the original purpose of the fountains and the rebuild this year.

What Works: Post-Parade Lesson is to Leave No Trace

The principle of Leave No Trace is in use on trails, in the public parks system. It’s also one of the 10 Principles of Burning Man. This weekend, after the Nevada Day festivities, record amounts of trash laced our streets. I can’t ignore this fact. When a person has a voice and an audience, I believe it is their personal responsibility to speak up. So, this week, in a personal and business context, I want to talk about what it means to Leave No Trace.

Monday, Oct. 31: Things to do in Carson City

Trick or treat, Carson City. Little ghouls and goblins will be hitting the streets for the annual tradition, so please drive carefully. Avoid the chill by hitting up the Carson Mall or Carson Library for goodies. The Governor will be handing out candy after 5 p.m.; you may want to start your west side visit with our Downtown Business Association’s Candy Crawl. Virginia City’s Goblin Parade is followed by trick or treating down ‘C’ Street. In Minden, don’t miss the annual Trick or Treat Safety Street at the CVIC Hall. Adults can enjoy Halloween Parties at Crossroad’s Lounge or the Blue Bull.

Nevada Day annually brings out the Silver State's best by celebrating its citizens of all ages, state and local organizations, civic clubs, school marching bands, small businesses, companies and corporations, fire and police departments, military services, veterans and lawmakers. It's the biggest annual statehood party celebrated in the nation.

Halloween fun all weekend for the kids and kids at heart

Even though Carson City is awash with Nevada Day festivities, Halloween is just as important. Here is an updated list of all the reasons to throw on a costume Saturday through Monday in Carson City and the surrounding valleys. Remember, rain is expected on Friday and Sunday, so consider an umbrella if you don’t want your make-up to run!

Governor Sandoval, First Lady prepare to host Nevada Day and Halloween festivities

Gov. Brian Sandoval and First Lady Kathleen Sandoval are scheduled to participate in the 2016 Nevada Day festivities and will host trick or treating at the Governor’s Mansion, an annual Halloween tradition celebrated by Nevada's top leaders.
