Possible measles case in Churchill County

A toddler from Churchill County with symptoms consistent with the measles is being evaluated with laboratory results are pending, health officials there announced Tuesday. Two similar cases were reported by Washoe County health officials on Monday.

Flu rate soars in Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties; anti-viral treatment recommended

According to the recent CDC Weekly Influenza Surveillance Report, the number of reported flu cases in Carson City, and Douglas and Lyon counties is higher than the national baseline. Dustin Boothe, Epidemiologist at CCHHS, identified a 53 percent increase in documented flu cases in the tri-county region over last year’s numbers.

State Engineer orders reduction of allowed groundwater pumping in Smith, Mason Valleys

On Tuesday, the Nevada State Engineer issued Order No. 1250 requiring a 50 percent mandatory reduction of groundwater that may be pumped for the 2015 irrigation season in the Smith Valley Basin (107) and Mason Valley Basin (108) Hydrographic Basins under supplemental irrigation water rights.

The objectives of the order are to protect existing water rights and wells, protect the physical integrity of the aquifer and to protect the long-term water supply. Nevada is entering what is anticipated to be a fourth year of drought conditions.

Hello fellow anglers,  I have to tell you, I have seen some big trout come out of our local area. But Idaho has us beat. On Jan. 8, 2015, Larry Warren was fishing on the Clearwater River in Idaho. Larry was fishing with 6 pound test line and caught a 28 pound rainbow steelhead trout.

Carson/Storey 4-H Awards Night

On Thursday, Jan 15, the Carson/Storey Cooperative Extension held their 2014 4-H year Awards Night at Fuji Park Pavilion.

The Carson 4-H Leader’s Council sponsored a pizza dinner prior to the ceremony. The Leader’s Council supports all of our 4-H clubs and holds events to raise funds for our scholarship program. They meet once a month to plan activities and deal with requests from clubs and the community.

Fallon man identified in fatal tractor trailer rollover Friday in Churchill County

A 73-year-old Fallon man, John Russell Edwards, died in a single vehicle tractor trailer rollover accident Friday west of Highway 95 on Lone Tree Road, a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper said Monday.

AG Laxalt appoints Patty Cafferata as communications director

Attorney General Adam Paul Laxalt announced today the appointment of Patty Cafferata as the Communications Director for his office.

“As a life-long Nevadan and former statewide public office holder, I am pleased Cafferata is joining my team,” said Laxalt. “She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the office.”

Carson Horseshoe Club Closure

UPDATE: Frank Streshley, Tax and License Division Chief in Carson City, said the Nevada Gaming Control Board "was informed of the temporary closure of the Carson Horse Club in advance of the closure."

He said the Carson Horseshoe Club must make "reasonable accommodations" to pay their patrons casino tokens or any vouchers. He was not sure if the Horseshoe Club uses the cash in-cash out vouchers.

Carson City area donations help FISH buy shelter shuttle

Through the support of Carson City area donors and organizations, Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, has bought a “new” used shuttle bus to transport residents of its homeless shelter. The 2008 Starcraft vehicle has a lift for wheelchair access and seats 13 passengers.

It replaces the FISH shelter van that had over 240,000 miles, carried only 10 passengers, and had no ability to transport clients using wheelchairs.

Pound of meth seized, three arrested in bust that focused on Dayton, Moundhouse

Three have been arrested after a monthlong investigation into methamphetamine trafficking in the Dayton and Moundhouse areas, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday night.

The investigation, which ended Jan. 21, led to the seizure of a pound of methamphetamine, eight firearms, and $4,500 in cash and involved two search warrants in the Dayton and Moundhouse area. Each of the three suspects are being held on $1 million bail.

Man killed in head-on motorcycle crash on Geiger Grade identified

On January 19, 2015 at approximately 4:15 pm, Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol were dispatched to a motorcycle accident that occurred on State Route 341 (Geiger Grade) between mile posts two and three in Washoe County just south of Loftis Drive.

One dead in crash involving two motorcycles on Geiger Grade

One person is dead and another in serious condition after an accident involving two motorcycles on Geiger Grade, State Route 341, Monday evening.

Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol were dispatched at 4:15 p.m. to a motorcycle accident that occurred on State Route Geiger Grade between mile posts two and three in Washoe County just south of Loftis Dr. The name of the deceased rider has not been released pending notification of family.

Riverside, Illinois man Yeats E. Brannik dies in rollover accident on Interstate 80 near Fernley

An 18-year-old Riverside, Illinois man, Yeats E. Brannik, died Saturday in a single vehicle crash on Interstate 80 in Lyon County two miles east of Fernley, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. Three other occupants, all Illinois residents, including a 17-year-old female were injured in the rollover crash in which two were ejected.

According to Trooper Dave Gibson approximately 5:10 am, NHP officers were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover accident that occurred on Interstate 80 at mile post 50 in Lyon County approximately 2 miles east of Fernley.

The following statement taken from the Carson High School website: On Jan. 1, 2015 a new state law takes effect for student drivers under the age of 18. Students looking forward to the privilege of driving in the State of Nevada are expected to attend school at least 90 percent of the time and not be considered a “Habitual Truant.”

USDA grant funds available for rural broadband

USDA Rural Development State Director Sarah Adler has announced that USDA is taking applications for Fiscal Year 2015 Community Connect Program grants. The program provides grants to establish essential broadband services in rural communities where it is currently not available.

“Many rural communities in Nevada do not have access to broadband,” said Adler. “USDA’s Community Connect Grant Program ensures that rural residents have the ability to run businesses, get the most from their education, and benefit from the infinite services that fast, reliable broadband provides.”

Carson City man dies in crash on Highway 50 near Lake Tahoe

A Carson City man, Joseph David Winters, died early Wednesday morning in a single vehicle accident on Highway 50 south of Glenbrook near Lake Tahoe, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

NHP Troopers were dispatched at 2:10 a.m. to a single vehicle rollover accident near mile marker 3 in Douglas County just south of Glenbrook, said NHP Trooper David Gibson. The crash investigation details indicate a maroon 2001 Jeep Wrangler driven by Winters, 27, of Carson City was traveling eastbound on Highway 50 in the right travel lane approaching mile marker 3 in Douglas County.
