NV Energy’s request to reduce rates for its electric and natural gas customers in northern and southern Nevada by $83.7 million was approved Thursday by Nevada's public utilities commission.

The Carson City Greenhouse Project will celebrate 10 years of its Concert Under the Stars series this summer with rock and roll hall of famers Jefferson Starship and special guests Midnight North, a Bay Area rock and Americana jam band with ties to Dead and Company's Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, organizers announced Saturday.

Voting is open for the $30,000 NV Energy Foundation Power of Good Giveaway. More than 110 nonprofits statewide, including several in the Carson City, Douglas and Lyon County areas, offer programs to support active duty military or military veterans are eligible and customer votes will decide the winners.

A downed power line reported around 10 a.m. Saturday morning in the area of U.S. Highway 50 East and Deer Run Road appears to be related to traffic back-up at the East College Parkway-Fairview Drive signal and a loss of electricity to more than 1,200 customers.

On Wednesday, March 14, the Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) will present a talk by Carson City’s Arts & Culture Director Mark Salinas.

His illustrated talk, "Choices, Chances, and Changes," is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors series and will take place at 6 p.m. at the Union restaurant, 302 W. Proctor St in Carson City.

There will be an informal reception for Salinas preceding the event at 5:30 p.m. No tickets needed; the public is cordially invited.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, "Works: Some Water Some Welded," with artwork by artists Susan Glaser Church and Stephen Reid at the city’s Sierra Room located in the Community Center, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public from March 2 – June 30, 2018. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Friday, March 2, 5-7pm in the Sierra Room.

UPDATE: 8:00PM: NV Energy reports 78 customers in downtown Carson City remain without power at this hour. Electricity is expected to be restored by 10:30 p.m. Sunday night, the utilities company said.

A power outage has been reported in the area of Roop and Robinson Streets, where the lights of the traffic signal at that intersection are reported to be out in all directions, according to Carson City Emergency Dispatch.

NV Energy announced Thursday its intention to lower customer rates by nearly $84 million as a result of the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.

A power outage has affected NV Energy customers Monday night in the area of East Fifth Street and Buzzy Ranch Road in East Carson City.

UPDATE 7:58PM: Firefighters have knocked down the fire at a College Parkway apartment complex. Additional resources have been scaled back. No injuries have been reported.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Saturday night to a structure fire in an apartment building in the 2000 block of College Parkway.

The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "Writing from Mars," by artist Rick Parsons at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. CCAI will host a reception for the artist on Friday, February 2, 5-7pm. The exhibit will be in the gallery from February 2 – May 23, 2018.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Tuesday morning to the area of Carmine Street for a report of power lines down caused by a truck moving a mobile home, according to dispatch.

NV Energy reports more than 360 customers were without power Wednesday evening in South Carson City after an outage that happened shortly after 4:30 p.m.

A cat stuck on a power pole brought a lot of attention to a Winnie Street apartment complex Thursday with the Carson City Fire Department showing up to see to it the cat came down safe. Or in this case, it fell into the safe hands of two Carson City firefighters holding a tarp.

Carson City Fire Department responded Thursday afternoon to a report of a power line sparking and causing a small brush fire in an area between Duck Hill Road and Goni Road northeast of Carson City and southeast of Washoe Lake.

The Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] announces its faculty exhibition, "Inspirations", at the Community Development Building [the Brick], 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. The Brick is open to the public daily, 8am – noon, 1-4pm. The exhibition will remain in the building’s lobby exhibition space from October 23, 2017 through January 11, 2018. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Wednesday, November 15, 5-7pm in the Brick.

When gaming and tech companies unveiled a ballot measure to restructure Nevada’s power market last year, NV Energy’s response was minimal. The state’s largest utility, which stands to lose its regulated monopoly on supplying power generation, said it was neutral on the Energy Choice Initiative, the proposed constitutional amendment to create a competitive power market.

UPDATE: 10:40PM: NV Energy now reports that restoration of power to the Ashby Court neighborhood is not expected before 12 a.m. Sunday morning. About 440 customers remain without power in the area at this hour.

Workers reportedly struck a live underground electrical line Saturday evening, according to Carson City Emergency Dispatch, causing a power outage to 438 customers in the Ashby Court neighborhood of East Carson City.

UPDATE 7:52PM: The smoke reported at AM/PM mini mart at Lompa Lane and U.S. Highway 50 East turned out to be from a small electrical motor inside the building, said CCFD Fire Capt. Micah Horton.
The smoke, believed to have been caused by an electrical surge from a line that had been struck nearby by NV Energy workers, was quickly isolated and extinguished, he said.
Currently, NV Energy reports 438 customers in the Ashby Court neighborhood behind Lompa Lane and AM/PM to be without power at this hour.
The outage was reported at 6:35 p.m. due to equipment power failure, NV Energy reported.

Students and local manufacturers will reap the benefits as the new Industrial Technology Lab opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday at Western Nevada College.

Come see Western Nevada College’s new NV Energy Industrial Technology Lab on Thursday, Oct. 5 at the Carson City campus. The unveiling of the lab will occur at 5 p.m. during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the Reynolds Building.

The Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] presents its exhibition, "Wish You Were Here", by artist Susanne Forestieri at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. CCAI will host a reception for the artist on Friday, October 6, 5-7pm. The exhibit will be in the gallery from October 6, 2017 – January 18, 2018.

The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open to the public Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm.

UPDATE 10:50AM: Power has been mostly restored to areas around Carson Valley in Douglas County. There are around 98 customers without power in the Buckeye Road, East Valley Road areas. NV Energy says power should be restored by 11 a.m.
