The public is invited to attend the 2019 Veterans Legislative Summit in Reno coming up this Saturday. The Veterans Summit is conducted by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services in partnership with the United Veterans Legislative Council.

Deer are more visible in Carson City this time of year, but it's not because Santa Claus is coming to town exactly one week from now.

Hello Carson City, do you see what we see? With fresh snow expected in the Sierra overnight and holiday lights around town lighting up the night sky, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Will it be a white one in Carson City? As of Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, we're eight days away, so anything is possible. Here's what is happening around the capital city:

Christmas is getting closer, and in Carson City, that means holiday trains. From the V&T Railway's Polar Express to the Nevada State Railroad Museum's Santa Train, rails around the state capital are busy delivering Saint Nicholas to children and spreading Christmas cheer.

There are only two more Saturdays until Christmas, and Santa Claus is back in Carson City again this weekend ahead of the big holiday.

Summit Estates Senior Living is collecting sleeping bags (new or used), hats, gloves, and socks to donate to the Northern Nevada Veterans Resource Center in Reno. The public can drop off donations now through Dec. 19, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m., at Summit Estates Senior Living, located at 222 E. Patriot Blvd., Reno. For more information, call (775) 434-1880.

The Battle Born Memorial was unveiled today on the State Capitol grounds in Carson City behind the Nevada State Library and Archives, dedicated to Nevada’s 895 fallen service members.

The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony of the Battle Born Memorial to Nevada’s military fallen on Friday, Nov. 9 on the state capitol grounds in Carson City.

I’m not even going to speculate on the air quality, but please use your best judgement when choosing your activities and there may be some cancellations that I am not aware of. Downtown has a full day of options, but the back roads may be a little more difficult to navigate due to construction projects. The great music that awaits will be worth the hassle. Read on and you’ll find indoors and outdoors activities that will help alleviate the cabin fever.

SATURDAY:

This is going to be an epic Fathers’ Day weekend. Carson City Off-Road sponsored by Epic Rides has taken over downtown with everything mountain bike and plays host to a free Music Festival in McFadden Plaza. Don’t miss Arts and Culture Day at the Nevada State Railroad Museum with unlimited rides on the Steam Train, special vendors, and more. Stewart Indian School will be a hotspot of activity with the annual Fathers’ Day PowWow underway. This is just the tip of the iceberg, read on for more fun than you’ll know what to do with.

SATURDAY:

She’s a grand ole flag, and there will be two ceremonies to recognize the stars and stripes in Carson City today. At 10 a.m. you can join the Nevada National Guard at the Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds for presentation of the colors, speakers, and even cake for the US Army’s anniversary. You’ll find the Elks Club honoring our flag at 3 p.m. The public are invited to both events. The Army isn’t the only birthday you’ll find today; Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery celebrates its seventh year with an artist reception and new work from Denise Jenkins.

The sixth annual "Adopt-a-Vet Poker Run" will be held this Saturday, June 16 in Carson City. Registration is 8:30 a.m. at Battle Born Harley Davidson, 2900 Research Way.

The actual run begins at 10:30 a.m. The total net proceeds will go to helping the Adopt-a-Vet Dental Program provide dental care for low income Northern Nevada veterans. See flyer above for details. The winning poker hand wins $500 and there will be food, fun, music and great raffle prizes.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada National Guard is set to host its 20th annual Flag Day and U.S. Army’s 243rd birthday celebration 10 a.m. June 14 at the Nevada Veterans Memorial on Capitol grounds, 101 N. Carson St.

Wednesday, May 16, 2018 Reno Town Mall 4001 S. Virginia St. Reno, NV 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Open for Active Duty military, Veterans, National Guard and Reserve, and military spouses 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Open to the general public The State of Nevada Career Fair in Reno will feature employment opportunities, information about various state agencies, and additional resources for Nevada Veterans.

Northern Nevada veterans will have the opportunity this coming weekend to speak out about issues and concerns important to them during a Nevada Veterans Legislative Symposium.

All local veterans are cordially invited to participate in a fun three-day retreat at Veterans Healing Camp in Silver Springs, Nev. from March 25 through March 28. There will be abundant opportunities for fun, fellowship and healing. Spend quality time with other Vets who are willing to share their stories and provide assistance.

SILVER SPRINGS, Nev. — The public is invited to the monthly breakfast meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties on Thursday, Feb. 8, 9 a.m. at the Silver Springs Community Center. Each month the private nonprofit convenes for a meeting featuring guest speakers and ongoing planning on issues impacting the region.

Gov. Brian Sandoval and Attorney General Adam Laxalt announced Monday the final funding approval of the Battle Born Memorial to Nevada’s Fallen Warriors in Carson City on the Capitol Complex.

There will be a public military funeral for 13 unclaimed Nevada veterans on Friday, Dec. 8, 2017, 2 p.m. at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.

During an official ceremony, 2,000 American flags were officially retired Friday. The ceremony was led by Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, with local elected officials, veterans groups, the Carson High School NJROTC and others.

The Carson City Council of the Navy League of the United States will honor Veterans, past and present, at our November Meeting! We will also pay tribute to our MIA’s and POW’s and celebrate both the Navy and Marine Corps birthdays. Our speaker for the Special Veteran’s Day celebration will be Katherine (Kat) Miller, Colonel, USA retired, who is Director of the Nevada Department of Veterans Services.

Carson City resident Brenda Horton, along with Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Dallas Croft, are set to receive an award and recognition from Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval's office in a special ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 21 2017.

Now is your chance to get involved, have some fun and make a difference. The Nevada Department of Veterans Services is hosting a free, two day workshop to help you become certified as a Nevada Veterans Advocate or NVA.

On Friday, Sept. 22, 2017 the remains of 27 veterans will finally receive the military burial and honor they were promised through their service in the U.S. Armed Forces. The service will be held beginning at 2 p.m. at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Cemetery, located at 14 Veterans Way, in Fernley, Nev. The public is invited to attend.

The wait for northern Nevada veterans is finally over. On Monday, July 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., there will be Groundbreaking Ceremony to celebrate the construction of the new Northern Nevada State Veterans Home. The event will be held on the site of the new facility, 2 Kietzke Lane, Sparks, NV, which is located across from the DMV.

Nevadans celebrated both Flag Day and the U.S. Army’s 242nd birthday Wednesday during a ceremony at the Nevada Veterans Memorial on the state capitol grounds in Carson City.

The Pony Express rides again. Actually, the re-ride is an annual occurrence, and always comes right through the heart of Carson City. See the mochila hand-off at the corner of Second and Curry Streets today around 12:30 p.m. (but can be up to three hours early or late) and you can follow its historic route online HERE. Reno, NV – The state’s Veterans Coordinator is organizing a State of Nevada Career Fair which features employment opportunities and other resource information for Nevada Veterans, June 22, in Reno. Attendees will benefit from meeting representatives from the following state agencies to learn about jobs available and benefits of working in Nevada State Government:
