National Honor Society

It’s that time of year at Carson High School when many of our organizations and clubs are participating in state competitions. Over the next month, I will be reporting on the results of these competitions.

State History Day results: The Northern Nevada National History Day contest was held on March 14 at the University of Nevada, Reno and Carson High School sophomores produced fantastic results. All first place entries qualify to move on to the national contest.

Hey Carson City, the Carson High Leadership class is organizing a clean-up day at Mills Park for Thursday, Feb. 26 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. This month, Carson High Leadership is focusing on Love Thy Community.
So every week, Carson High's Student Council will be encouraging their fellow students to clean up in several different ways: they will be making posters and flyers and putting them up around the school, it will be on the announcements, and every Thursday of Friday they will be passing out a reward when they see other students cleaning up.

For the last six years, Carson High School has held an alumni night at the Carson-Douglas basketball game in which alumni are recognized and celebrated. It’s a chance for alumni to come back and visit the old stomping grounds, support the Senators and a chance for us to celebrate contributions and the lives of CHS alumni. The Alumni games will be held February 13 against Douglas Tigers.

The 5th annual CHS Safe and Sober 5k Run/Walk was a tremendous success with turn-out of 113 participants. The weather cleared up this morning and with just a bit of wind at race time, we couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather, maybe even a sunburn.

The Carson High School Choral Program will have its Madrigal Dinner on Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 before February 1st and $25 after Feb. 1. A Madrigal Dinner or Madrigal Feast is an American form of dinner theater often held by schools.

Winterfest is upon us here at Carson High School. The upcoming week will be filled with activites and celebrations for the students and staff at CHS. The theme of Winterfest is WinterFlix, like Netflix. Congratulations to the Winterfest Candidates who have been nominated by their classmates. One prince and princess will be chosen by a class vote for the freshmen, sophomores and juniors. One king and queen will be chosen among the senior class. Royalty court will be announced Thursday.

The following statement taken from the Carson High School website: On Jan. 1, 2015 a new state law takes effect for student drivers under the age of 18. Students looking forward to the privilege of driving in the State of Nevada are expected to attend school at least 90 percent of the time and not be considered a “Habitual Truant.”

Carson High School Culinary Arts has been named to the 2014-15 Elite 50 by the National Center for Hospitality Studies by the Sullivan University. The award recognizes an exclusive group of high schools that excel in the areas of culinary arts, baking and pastry arts.

This is the season for giving. Our students and staff at CHS have big hearts. Many Carson High School clubs and teams adopted families from the Empire School District for the Christmas holiday. Thank you to HOSA, FBLA, Boys’ basketball, boy’s baseball, Key Club, Link Crew, and Leadership classes for providing gifts and essentials to these families.

The Instrumental Music Department, Bands and Orchestra, is having its annual Winter Holiday Concert on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Donations are welcome. Meanwhile, Carson High School has had a number of their singing Senators recognized for their vocal talents already this year.

Carson High School seniors recently volunteered for the 2014 General elections in Carson City. Emely Lopez, Claudia Vazquez, Kimberly Torres, Karina Munoz, Maria Pacheco, Deanna Earwicker, and Amber Seifert spent the day at the polls welcoming and assisting voters. Each year, CHS government teachers work in conjunction with the Carson City Clerk-Recorder’s office to provide student volunteers for the elections. We’d like to wish out-going Clerk-Recorder Alan Glover the best of luck in his retirement and we look forward to continuing our relationship with that office as Ms.

The CHS Ski Team will be hosting the latest Warren Miller Film, “No Turning Back” on Dec. 12, 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Tickets can be purchased from any ski team member or from their advisor Adrienne Schneider.

Tickets are $8 for students and $12 for adults. They are also selling raffle tickets in conjunction with the movie. A multiple of prizes are available that evening at the showing of the film. Raffle tickets cost $1 each or 25 tickets for $20. Doors open at 6 PM.

Debate Results

Carson High’s 20th annual Holiday Craft Fair is Friday, Nov. 21 from 5 to 8p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be the best one yet with lots of new vendors as well as all your favorites. Come spend some time – great food, entertainment, a raffle, Santa, book sale, and of course, amazing and unique gifts for everyone. Admission for adults on Friday evening is only $2 and includes a raffle ticket as well as re-entry privileges on Saturday.

The CHS Marching Band competed last weekend in the Nevada Day Battle of the Bands held at Spanish Springs High School. The band finished first in their division beating out rivals Douglas High School.

They received the caption for "Outstanding Music." This award marks the first time in nine years that the marching band took home a first place trophy in a field show competition. Way to Go Big Blue Thunder!

Academic Award

Caden Lehman, a senior at Carson High School, an officer for the Capitol FFA program, and an officer in the Douglas-Carson High School Rodeo Club, recently had his biggest win doing what he loves. He is involved in Team Roping and Calf Roping and is a member of the American Cowboys Team Roping Association. 

Recently at the ACTRA National Finals in Reno at the Livestock Events Center, Caden won the Super 7 National Championship, landing him and his partner, Jack Curry of Gardnerville, each new Royal T 3-horse trailers, buckles, and $10,000 cash. 

Carson High School's annual homecoming has arrived. Kicking off the event-filled week was an assembly Tuesday where seniors got their first taste of what candidates they might want to vote for to represent as their 2014 Homecoming royalty.

This year's candidates are just as lively as ever. Candidates for Homecoming queen are: Abbey Dudley, Lindsay Hettrick, Bailie Zuber, Chantal Torres, Sarah Christl and Jessica Basa. King contestants are: Jared Hearn, Dylin Rooker, Nolan Shine, Fred Christensen, Casey Stevens and Kyle Kunz.

The annual tradition of Homecoming is upon us. There are many activities taking place this week, both athletic and non-athletic. Each day has a particular dress-up theme, a lunch time activity, and an evening time activity that students can participate. Tuesday’s dress up day is “crazy hat” day.

The annual National Honor Society Induction Ceremony took place in the Carson High School gym Monday. The event included 80 new inductees and 79 returning members to make the combined 159 members in the National Honor Society class.

Along with the honored members were some very exclusive guests. Of those guests were a handful of counselors from Carson High School, Carson High School principal Tasha Fuson, Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes and Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell.

Currently playing at the Carson City Community Center is the "House of Bernalda Alba" performed by CHS Theater students. The dramatic play had its first show this past weekend. It will continue this coming weekend with performances on Oct. 9, 10, 11 at 7p.m. and again at 2 p.m. on Oct. 11. General admission prices are $10 at the door, $5 for students. This week’s Carson High senior spotlight is on Tyler Torres. Tyler has a GPA of 4.62 and has increasingly challenged himself with honors and/or AP classes every year, earning academic letters the past two years. He is currently taking four AP classes in his senior year. Talented and well-rounded, Tyler has been in Chamber Choir since freshman year. He has also been a member of the National Honor Society for the past three years and Link Crew for two years. To further develop his leadership ability, Tyler has been involved in Boy Scouts since middle school.

This Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Carson High School Health Occupations Students of America members will host car wash and rummage sale in the U at the front of the school. Pre-sale car wash tickets are $3 and can be purchased from any HOSA student. The cost will go up to $5 the day of the car wash. All proceeds go to help send HOSA students to State and National conferences to compete and represent Carson City.

Welcome back to the third installment of Senator Square. We had an exciting week at CHS including a video message from our rivals from Douglas High School. Their staff challenged our staff to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. More than 50 CHS teachers and staff showed up for the challenge, as we could never let the Tigers out-do us.

A good education is an important component of any child’s upbringing. Combine good education with religious studies, and you gain life experiences and spiritual foundations that yield benefits for years to come. Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) have long since believed in and encouraged its members to seek quality education in both secular and religious areas. Over one hundred years ago, the Church started a seminary program in religious studies for its youth.

Early Beginning

Jake Bayliss, a senior at Reno’s Bishop Manogue High School and Carson City resident, decided to support American Veterans in need by organizing a “Toiletries Drive” to benefit the VA Hospital in Reno, Nevada. Jake gathered over 200 kits containing toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, razors, shaving cream and deodorant which he delivered to the VA Hospital on August 22, 2012.
