Carson City’s Big Read Event featuring “True Grit” will kick off May 3 with an exhibit at Western Nevada College displaying artwork made from canceled playing cards from area casinos.

I’m going to apologize right now. I can’t anticipate what this storm system will throw at us, so some of these planned events could get cancelled. One event that is never afraid of Mother Nature is the Downtown Carson City Wine Walk. Come rain, shine, or blizzard, you’ll find can sip, stroll, and discover starting at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Carson Hot Springs aren’t afraid of a little snow, and a special visit from Megan the Mermaid will make the icy hot experience more memorable. SATURDAY:

On Wednesday, March 14, the Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) will present a talk by Carson City’s Arts & Culture Director Mark Salinas.

His illustrated talk, "Choices, Chances, and Changes," is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors series and will take place at 6 p.m. at the Union restaurant, 302 W. Proctor St in Carson City.

There will be an informal reception for Salinas preceding the event at 5:30 p.m. No tickets needed; the public is cordially invited.

Artists from across the state, representing an array of mediums, are featured on the cover of this year’s Nevada Day program.
“The cover is a shared authorship of several artists, which plays into the ideals of the Nevada Day parade and its theme,” said Mark Salinas, Carson City’s director of arts and culture.

A tribute to Nevada’s arts and entertainment will kick off this year’s Nevada Day festivities celebrating the same theme. Capital Collage 2017, featuring a variety of arts and artists from across the state, will be 7-11 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, 1870 Russell Way.

Silver City, Nevada – The historic Comstock town Silver City offers a wide range of public programming year round, but the community really goes "all out" during the summer months.

Carson City’s art and culture director is looking to the youth for insight and suggestions into the community’s mural program.

The Brewery Arts Center will continues an unforgettable season of free concerts under the stars in Carson City! this Saturday. Having started out strong last week with Big Bad VooDoo Daddy, the great music continues with The Novelists and Athena McIntyre.

Patrons of the dining room at Friends in Service Helping will soon have a brighter and more cheerful wall to look at. For its final project, the Carson City Chamber of Commerce’s 2017 Leadership Class is painting a mural in the dining room, which serves meals to homeless people and others in need.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — The Silver City Arts group announces its exhibition featuring the work of Larry Kotik in his first one person show. The group will host a reception on Saturday, May 6th at the Silver City School House, 385 High Street, from 1 to 4 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free and the public is cordially invited.

The 2017 Carson City Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class, comprised of 24 leadership professions, is privileged to welcome the community to a public unveiling of their class project on Friday, May 5, 2017 at 6 p.m.
The class, often referred to as “the Best Class” has worked diligently acquiring materials, constructing and painting a themed mural in the dining area of FISH (Friends In Service Helping).

SILVER CITY, Nev. — Since 2014, Silver City Arts group has hosted music, visual arts, and poetry events and programs. The group draws on the community's own rich resource of artists, artisans and musicians, and also connects with regional and statewide groups to bring programming by national and international artists and musicians. The group of volunteers’ mission is "to encourage the arts, build community, and share our unique town through free, public events." Below are a few highlights.

Standing in front of artist Mauricio Sandoval’s newest mural on West Telegraph Street gives one the feeling they are admiring the high desert landscape of Northern Nevada rather than a brick wall.

Let’s just call this Nevad-oween weekend. So much crazy fun awaits: whether it’s the celebration of our ‘new’ downtown, Halloween parties for kids and adults alike, or our State Museum’s 75th Anniversary. Start your day at the Museum, hang around for the downtown ribbon cutting and festivities, then join in the costumed fun as Blinky Man hits the streets. Do the time warp at the Brewery Arts Center: the Rocky Horror Picture Show Party starts at 8:30 p.m. This is going to be one amazing weekend, so let’s get this party started.

Mauricio Sandoval hopes that when people see his mural on a wall on Telegraph Street, it makes them feel good.
“The main thing about my art is to make people feel happy — or what I call good medicine,” Sandoval said. “It’s more of a home feeling.”

Pick your poison, Carson City. Art, music, politics, film, hiking: all are available today. CCAI brings us a Nevada Neighbors talk with one of the artists featured in the Nevada Museum of Art. The Wired Wednesday group has a workshop for filmmakers in time for the upcoming creepy film festival and competition. Local candidates can be found at the BAC Performance Hall in the first of three voters' forums. It's hard to miss the new 'Home Means Nevada' mural on the side of CAL Ranch at Winnie Lane; the opening ceremony for our newest piece of art is at 2 p.m.

McDonald’s restaurant is set to display their new mural “Home Means Nevada” on October 11, 2016 at 2PM at the McDonald’s, 2001 N. Carson St. in Carson City. The mural’s ribbon cutting ceremony will include artist Erik Burke, Carson City Supervisor, Karen Abowd, and Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell. The mural encompasses historic leaders that have impacted Nevada including: Jack Johnson, Bertha Raffetto, Abraham Curry, Sarah Winnemucca, Kit Carson, and Julia Bulette.

Join Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery, LLC and the Charlie B. Gallery for an evening of community and the local arts.

Telegraph Street will be lined with local artists, giving you the opportunity to meet and talk to them. Free live music will be provided by Linda Arnn Arteno and local food trucks will be on hand to fill those bellies.

Mark Salinas, who runs a commercial and community design company in New York City, has been selected to fill the new arts and culture coordinator position in Carson City.

Welcome to the weekend, Carson City. The Senior Follies have taken over the Community Center’s Bob Boldrick Theater. Kids won’t want to miss the Capitol City Triathlon: swim, bike, and run your way to the winner’s circle. Celebrate community at the second annual Sassabration and don't forget your bathing suit: the Carson Hot Springs will be free from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Find a feline friend at the Nevada Humane Society’s free adoption weekend. Downtown is the place to be Saturday with over twelve hours jam packed full of fun. The Third and Curry Farmers Market begins at 8:30 a.m. From there head north on Curry to the Spring Vintage Faire at Due Sorella. Stick around for the Downtown Business Association Wine Walk at 1 p.m. The Rotary Club brings you the Capital City Brewfest at 3 p.m. Family friendly fun hits the outdoor stage at the Brewery Arts Center: Mumbo Gumbo will have you dancing in the street.

In an age when consumers go through digital technology faster than a pair of socks, used video games are all too often discarded in favor of the latest and greatest versions. They become archaic within months after having once been cutting edge.

But Nick Posey reminds us that there's still hope for the old games. The owner of Retro Replay specializes in the sale, cleaning, and care of vintage used video games and equipment.

Eighteenth Century English poet William Cowper once wrote that variety is the spice of life.

In Carson City, both variety and spice can be found together in one place at Sassafras Electic Food Joint, currently located on the Carson Hot Springs Resort property at 1500 Old Hot Springs Road.

The mood was cheerful Tuesday at Carson City's newest gaming store's grand opening. Outside, employee Tabatha Hughes barbecued hot dogs; inside, a stand of cupcakes and cake decorated to look like a Super Nintendo stood on a display as owners Nick and Mandy Posey (Mandy was decked out in full Super Mario gear) watched on with pride.

As a child Gina Hill, then Gina Lopez, danced her way through Carson City. “it was all I ever knew, really,” she said. She was a regular in a floor show in a Mexican restaurant in the former Silver City Mall — where Lowe’s now stands. Earning her Screen Actors Guild card, she also starred in a McDonald’s commercial that ran annually.

CHS competed at the Spanish Springs tournament last weekend for speech and debate. Twenty-one Carson High debaters competed on Friday and 16 students competed Saturday. Several students brought home top honors at this tournament which had roughly 470 entries. Competing in senior level debate for the first time Evan Cherpeski took tenth place in Public Forum speaking point.

After working as a chef for more than 30 years, Anthony Fish still hasn’t decided on a favorite food. Lucky for him, as the owner of the popular Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint, he doesn’t have to.

“I get bored easily, so I like to do new stuff,” he said. “I do whatever I want.” When pressed, he narrows it down to American Southern, Pacific Rim, Asian, Latin.

The Greater Nevada Credit Union branch at CHS recently sponsored a Mural Contest open to all Carson High Students. All entries were judged and the 1st place winner was Athena Favero, who received a $200 Amazon Gift Card. Second place and a $100 Amazon Gift Card went to Michael Rose. As part of the contest, Athena painted her winning design "A Senator’s Road To Success” on the hallway wall outside the GNCU branch at CHS. Students and staff are encouraged to come by and see her winning mural at Carson High School. Congratulations to our winners, and thanks to all the students who entered.
