Douglas County picks two assistant county manager candidates

After conducting panel interviews of 8 applicants on August 7, 2017 for the position of Assistant County Manager, two candidates have been recommended to move on to be interviewed by the County Manager, Larry Werner.

A public meet and greet has been scheduled for August 21, 2017 from 5-7 pm at the ballroom in the Carson Valley Inn. The public is encouraged to come and meet the candidates during this event.

The two candidates chosen are Philip Ritger, Town of Genoa Manager and Bradley Hurley, Deputy Communications Officer with the Department of Defense. Both are residents of Douglas County.

Below we have included information on both candidates for publication:

Bradley Hurley
Bradley Hurley is currently the information technology officer for the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center located at Bridgeport, Calif. Bradley joined the training center team in 2010 and was accepted for his present position December 22, 2013.

Bradley brings a distinguished career highlighted with over 27 years of experience in leading high performance operational work environments with proven results. Recognized as a high-potential administrator, he is a seasoned leader with a reputation for leading change, instituting technology modernization initiatives, building diverse project teams, and strategic campaign planning.

As a servant leader, Bradley brings the executive core qualifications focused on business acumen, building coalitions and seeks to improve innovation and efficiency to further the strategic objectives of the organization, the customers, and stakeholders.

Bradley is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he served honorably for 20 years and was retired from service in 2009. During his career, Bradley was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Accommodation Medal with second award, the Navy Achievement Medal with forth award for outstanding meritorious service and performance of duty.

Bradley holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Multidisciplinary Studies from Grantham University. He is currently studying at Michigan State University’s Eli Broad College of Business and is on track to receive a Master of Science Degree in Leadership, Management and Strategy in the fall of 2018. He is an alumnus of the Graduate School Executive Potential Program which he completed in June 2013.

Philip Ritger
Philip has served as the Genoa Town Manager for the past 4 years.

Philip Ritger is a results oriented professional with the proven ability to lead, build trust, promote teamwork and effect change. He has spent the majority of his career working for entrepreneurial companies in both technical and business management positions where he led with a focus on providing quality outcomes and practical financial direction with limited resources.

Philip received a B.A. in Chemistry from Lawrence University and a M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University. He holds eleven patents in the medical device field and has nine publications. Philip received certification as a Lean-Six Sigma Black Belt from the University of California, San Diego.

He developed and conducted training programs for Lean business practices that encouraged grass roots, bottom-up quality and service improvement initiatives.

The Assistant County Manager will provide assistance and support to the County Manager in making decisions and recommendations regarding the overall operations of the County, as well as serving to represent the County in dealings with public officials from other jurisdictions, representatives of private industry, and members of the general public.

Previously the Assistant County Manager and Chief Financial Officer was a dual role. The Douglas County Commissioners added the new position which separated the two roles into the 2017/2018 fiscal year budget.

UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.

Junior Park Ranger Day is back this Saturday, April 27 at Riverview Park in Carson City.

Junior Park Ranger Day is an annual event dedicated to help kids complete their Junior Ranger Adventure Guides and be sworn in all in one day.
