Carson High School will again open its doors a little wider and longer for the 3rd Annual Back-to-School Night like no other Sept. 9. Open House, Open Hearts is a community event focused on building bridges to local services for teens and their families, increasing parent and guardian engagement at CHS, and celebrating the community, creativity, and diverse talents of Carson City.

Moving into Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, there's another chance for thunderstorms headed our way and then a bit of a cool down going into the weekend. Looking around the capital city Thursday there's a meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, auditions for V&T Railway's Polar Express, art showings, a host of activities at the Carson City Library, a Muscle Powered morning hike and more.

Carson City resident Maxine Hauser Nietz will share her love of space and her work with NASA during the Leisure Hour Club’s September meeting. The organization will begin its 124th year on Wednesday, Sept. 18 with Nietz’s presentation and a business meeting.

Watching them gather, wearing pajamas, wrapped in blankets, and celebrating the beginning of their senior year, the Class of 2019-2020 gathered together at 6:00 a.m. Aug. 30 on the bleachers of the Carson High School football field to watch the sun rise; it is the beginning of their last year at CHS, and, for some of them, their last year as students who were raised within the Carson City School District, students who went from kindergarten at Mark Twain Elementary to Carson Middle School and have spent the last three years at CHS.

Heading into Thursday, August 29, 2019 and we're ready and due for the upcoming three-day holiday weekend ahead. Looking around the Carson City area for Thursday there's art showings, a Muscle Powered hike, a Partnership Carson City training and lunch and then a vigil to recognize and prevent opioid overdose and more.

If you could rename the seasons in Northern Nevada, it might go something like this. Ski Season, Construction Season, Burning Man, and Nevada Day. Burning Man season is here! Soon you will start seeing art cars, buses, RVs, bike racks galore, and those people who call themselves Burners.

Nevada Republicans meet in Winnemucca September 7 to elect our leaders for the 2020 campaign. We need to turn Nevada red for two reasons: 1) to help re-elect Donald Trump president; and 2) to win enough legislative seats to assure the 2021 redistricting will be a fair process, not another Democrat gerrymandering riot.

The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation on Thursday announced the appointment of two administrative positions for divisions in Carson City and Las Vegas.

Ms. Kimberly Gaa has been appointed as administrator for the agency’s Employment Security Division in Carson City and Dr. Marilyn Delmont has been appointed as administrator of the Information Development and Processing Division in Las Vegas.

Coming up on Thursday, August 22, 2019, we can expect continued sunny skies with a daytime near 90. Among upcoming events: Thursday is the final day of the Jukebox International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center. Take in a film screening and talk to the filmmakers who made them. There's a Polka Dot Powerhouse Carson City lunch connect at Red's Old 395 Grill, plus Food Truck Thursday at Mills Park and a volunteer expo hosted by Leadership Douglas County. There's also a discussion about aviation history and trends at the Nevada State Museum, a Carson City GOP information meeting on Block Chain technology, Jazz and Beyond music festival events and more. This week, I got into a rousing text conversation about feeling imprisoned. We spoke about obligations, duty, and ultimately — the choices that led up to those imprisonments. Prison isn’t just a place for criminals to go to pay their retribution to society. We can create prisons for ourselves and not even know it.

The Douglas County Leadership class of 2019 is hosting the first Volunteer Expo to provide awareness of volunteer opportunities for children and adults in Douglas County and the surrounding area to encourage involvement and promote local organizations in our community through an informational expo.

Heading into Monday, August 19, 2019 and that means one thing if you're a teacher, parent or student: It's the first day of class across Carson City School District campuses. Welcome back. Make it a safe, enjoyable experience as this day will create memories that will last a lifetime. Set that alarm clock if the pituitary gland is not yet ready to do its job, because Monday arrives tomorrow and it is time yet again for students, parents, and even teachers to get out of bed early for the 2019-2020 school year.

Heading into Thursday, August 15, 2019 we can expect hot weather to continue with high temperatures near 100. Among events for the day, there will be a wreath remembrance ceremony for fallen Carson City law enforcement officers at the sheriff's office, a Muscle Powered morning hike, art showings, and a meeting of the Status of Women in Nevada group at the Carson Nugget. As part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival, there will be an outdoor "Woodstock Remembered" concert at Comma Coffee and a music presentation, "All About that Bass" by Scot Marshall and Friends at the Nevada State Museum.

Have you ever felt like projects, circumstances, the world was just piling on top of you like rocks? One rock is easy. You can catch it as it falls from the heavens and deal with it: setting it to the side, jackhammering it up into little pieces, or giving the rock to someone else.

The 2019 Carson City Fair finished its third year on the last Sunday in July with a record number of participants, exhibits and spectators. The Fair’s claim to fame is a focus on local youth livestock shows and traditional exhibits. This year, most people didn’t miss the carnival, due to the free games provided on the grassy area.

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce the appointment of seven new principals and district administrators for the 2019-2020 school year.

Heading into the first day of the work week, if you're an early, early riser or are settling in for the night, you'll want to step outside at around 3 a.m. for the peak of the Perseid shower, which will be in the eastern sky. If you missed them, there will be a viewing party hosted by Carson City Parks and Rec at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at WNC beginning at midnight Tuesday morning, August 13. Otherwise, it's onward and upward into the day with a Cooperative Extension presentation, Shred Kids mountain bike camp, Red Cross sitter certification class, West Coast swing dancing and more.

This American Red Cross Babysitter's Training Course will provide youth who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly care for children and infants. This training will help participants develop leadership skills, develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe, understand children from ages 0 to 10, help children and infants with daily needs, help children with their behavior, and become fully certified in pediatric CPR and First Aid.

The Douglas County Leadership class of 2019 is hosting the first annual Leadership Volunteer Expo to provide awareness of volunteer opportunities for children and adults in Douglas County to encourage involvement and promote local organizations in our community through an informational expo.

The expo is scheduled for Thursday, August 22, 2019, from 3:30 -7:00 PM at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center in the Dining Room. This event is free and we will have raffle prizes for participants.

This week, I am traveling to see my family in Texas. Whenever I go back to my roots, I’m always reminded of the deep seedlings that exist here for me. These seedlings are connections made during my formative years, all the way back to kindergarten.

The finalists for the director of the Carson City Library position will be interviewed during a board meeting Friday evening, with a portion dedicated to questions from the public.

CARSON CITY — Business may be Greek to many college freshmen, but it’s the heart language of Avery Casteel. Casteel, a 2018 graduate from Sierra Lutheran High School and a rising sophomore at Concordia University, Irvine used her first year in college to quickly grab ahold of the fast-climbing elevator to the executive suite for college students studying business.

Using funds left over from their successful project to provide Carson City with its first bee habitat, 2019 Carson City Leadership class representatives Angela Holt and Steve Jones presented a check in the amount of $634.01 to Greenhouse Project founder Karen Abowd, board member Cheryl Rotter and Foothill Garden manager Will Pierz.

CARSON CITY — Suzanne Bierman, administrator of the Nevada Division of Health Care Financing and Policy, has been announced as one of six state-level directors chosen to participate in the Medicaid Leadership Institute, a national initiative directed by the Center for Health Care Strategies and made possible by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
