Carson City Leisure Hour Club Meets a Self-Declared Space Junkie
Carson City resident Maxine Hauser Nietz will share her love of space and her work with NASA during the Leisure Hour Club’s September meeting. The organization will begin its 124th year on Wednesday, Sept. 18 with Nietz’s presentation and a business meeting.
Nietz says that she was “always been a space junkie.” Growing up in New York City, she read Isaac Asimov, E.E. “Doc” Smith and Robert Heinlein dreaming of a future in space. In order to make her dream a reality, she moved west and worked at NASA/Cal Tech’s Jet Propulsion Lab. She worked on projects like Voyager, Viking, Helios and Pioneer. She was the first woman mission controller in the NASA planetary program.
As a local leader, innovator, and advocate, she had a leadership role with the Western Nevada College Advisory Board. Nietz attended the opening of the Jack C. Davis Observatory on the college campus and was fortunate enough to meet Buzz Aldrin. She continues to feel that the space program is essential to the nation’s future and that she was born a little too early to get out into space.
Nietz also owns and operates Capital City Computing, a custom computer programming services business located in Carson City for over 30 years. In her spare time, she is a strong advocate for preserving Carson City’s open spaces.
If you would like to attend this event, please contact the Club’s reservation chair at (775) 400-2647 or LHCreservations@gmail.com no later than 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15 to make your reservation. The meeting is preceded by a buffet dinner at 6:00 pm in the Carson Nugget Capitol Ballroom. Reservations for the meeting and dinner are required.
The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization. Celebrating its 124th year, the organization is focused on its goal of promoting knowledge of important issues, science, music and literature.
