Carson City Support Services Specialist and children's book author Elizabeth "Liz" Ann Patterson has been busy since the last time Carson Now spoke with her.

In early 2011 she had penned her first children's fantasy and adventure book "Bonners Fairy," an all-ages story about teenage twins who discover a secret world of dark and light forces hidden in a portal on their father's estate.

CARSON CITY – Nevada casinos took in $978.8 million from gamblers in October, eking out a modest 1.9 percent increase over the same month in 2011, the Gaming Control Board reported today. It was the third consecutive month of modest gaming wins for the state.

For the 2013 fiscal year that began July 1, the gaming win has increased 4.6 percent.

A Carson City man was arrested Wednesday, Dec. 5, and faces a felony charge of being a fugitive from justice with a warrant for his arrest out of Los Angeles on a drug charge that dates back to March 1993.

Jeffrey Jason Defalco, 40, listed as a postman for his occupation, was arrested shortly after 8 a.m. near Silver Sage and Koontz. Defalco was stopped for speeding when radar clocked him going 37 mph in a 25 mph zone, according to the arrest report.

CARSON CITY - Unless legislators extend taxes scheduled to expire July 1, state government will operate with $343 million less money in 2014-15 than it is spending during the current two-year budget period.
And even that depends on how the folks in Washington, D.C., handle the federal government's fiscal crisis.

That was the grim but expected news that came out of Friday's meeting of the Economic Forum, the group of five business leaders who by law determine how much tax revenue state government will have to spend during the two-year period that starts in July.

Most of the 100,000 active public employees in Nevada will have to pay 2 percentage points more in retirement premiums starting July 1.
The PERS board, basing its decision on a study by an actuary, voted Wednesday to increase retirement rates to 25.75 percent of each regular employee's wages, with half of that paid by the employee and half by the employer.

Carson City and Carson Valley casinos saw gaming profits remain flat in September while Lake Tahoe and overall statewide figures show a steady increase, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reports Thursday.
Statewide nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $892,748,756 for the month of September, a 3.33 percent increase compared to September 2011. For the fiscal year (July 1 through Sept. 30, 2012), gaming win has increased 5.63 percent.

Cost estimates vary from $28M to $49M (plus financing costs), depending on what’s included. Even with the tax hike, the intent is to raid NNDA, sewer, federal and private funds. Vote NO on CC #1.

A popular, new program offered by the Nevada Rural Housing Authority (NRHA) is making home ownership even more affordable. Through the Home at Last™ Access program, qualified home buyers receive a generous 4 percent down payment grant, which does not have to be paid back.

Now, the program is offering even lower mortgage interest rates on a conventional, 30-year fixed rate loan. Through participating lenders, the interest rates on FHA, VA or USDA-RD home mortgages have dropped from 3.75 percent to the current rate of 3.5 percent, which is an historic low.

The Center for Research Design and Analysis was contracted by the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety to conduct a telephone survey about Nevadans' driving behavior and attitudes. The objectives of this survey included gathering behavioral self-reported and opinion data on key safety issues, such as impaired driving, safety belts, speeding, and distracted driving. The OTS also was interested in examining the effect that a "Click it or Ticket" (CIOT) campaign had on respondents' answers to safety belt questions. The CIOT campaign ran from May 21, 2012 through June 3, 2012.

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s unemployment rate fell to 11.8 percent in September, a decline of three-tenths of a percentage point from the 12.1 percent rate reported for August and a significant improvement from September 2011’s reading of 13.6 percent, a state agency reported today.

The seasonally-adjusted rate remains above the 11.6 percent figure reported in May, which was a three-year low.

AAA Nevada will present $20,250 to the Nevada Division of State Parks to improve directional signs throughout Lahontan State Recreation Area. The public is invited to attend the check presentation ceremony that will take place Tuesday, October 23, at 1:30 p.m. at 901 S. Stewart Street in Carson City.

AAA Nevada teamed up to help Nevada State Parks help fund projects that would otherwise go unfunded. Throughout their “Summer Road Trip” campaign July 1 through August 30, AAA Nevada donated $5 to Nevada State Parks for every AAA insurance quote completed within each AAA branch office.

CARSON CITY – Nevada casinos raked in $859.2 million from gamblers in August, but it wasn’t enough to stave off a modest 3.1 percent revenue decline over August 2011, the state Gaming Control Board reported today.

Clark County was down 3.4 percent with $727 million in revenues, but the Strip was off only 1.2 percent with $490.9 million taken in on table games and slots.
