Carson City School Board Meeting for July 24

The Carson City School District will be holding a school board meeting on Tuesday, July 24 at 7 P.M. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center on 851 E. William Street.

The topics that will be discussed in this meeting are updates on Phase I School Bond Projects; such as parking lots, interior and building improvements at Fremont, Seeliger, and Mark Twain Elementary Schools, followed by proposed changes to the CCSD Policies.

Edgewood Companies agreement with South Lake Tahoe creates Bonanza Park

After more than a year in the making, the official opening of Bonanza Park in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday brought community members and families together in celebration of a cooperative public and private agreement made possible by city leaders and Edgewood Companies.
South Lake Tahoe Mayor Claire Fortier and Edgewood's CEO and president Chuck Scharer gladly cut the ribbon after months of negotiations allowing for future property and building rights in exchange for the public park.

United Way funds RSVP and Alzheimer’s care giving training sessions

“The NV Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program Inc.(RSVP)has partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association to provide state of the art training for family caregivers and respite volunteers on how to more effectively assist persons suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers” said Janice R. Ayres, executive director and chief financial officer of RSVP. The training has been made possible by a grant from the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierras.

Celebrate History of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce

Celebrate the past Chamber Chairs who have been a part of Carson City’s community and history at the Carson City Chamber’s Annual Meeting on Monday, July 23 at the Silver Oak Golf Club.
The event begins at 5:30 P.M. with a no host cocktail reception, followed by a barbeque. At 7 P.M., the program begins installation of the 2012 – 2013 Board.
The cost of entrance is $45 per person, and it includes a commemorative book.

Carson City hosts annual Senior Follies production through weekend

This weekend some of the area’s most talented senior citizens will be on stage at the Carson City Community Center in the annual Senior Follies production of “Those Delightful Decades.” This annual production is a fundraiser for the Senior Meals Programs offered through the Carson City Senior Citizens Center.

Crime Log for Friday, July 13

Carson City Sheriff's Deputies have arrested Anthony Paul Luca, 32, for failure to register as an ex-felon and possession of a controlled substance.

Officers also arrested the following individuals for misdemeanor allegations:

  • A 19-year-old Carson City man for a trespassing warrant in his name and a contempt of court warrant in his name.
  • A 36-year-old transient man for disorderly conduct and probation violation.
  • A 27-year-old Dayton man for failure to register as an ex-felon and a failure to appear traffic warrant in his name.

Carson City area casino 'win' for May down nearly 10 percent

Carson Valley area casinos reported a drop in monthly gaming "win" for May, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board on Thursday. Casinos in Carson City, Gardnerville, Minden and others in Douglas County except Lake Tahoe report a 9.98 percent decrease compared to May 2011. Casinos in May took in $8,248, 755. In May 2011 the "win" was $9,162,840.

Nevada State Museum hosts Family Weekend

Spend a Saturday with the family and discover Nevada reptiles at the Nevada State Museum, in a hands-on nature program for kids of the ages 6 – 11. Of course, the parents have their own scientific duty as well; as the kids take on experiments with nature, parents will use microscopes and specimens in a lab setting. Activities will also include creating and painting a lizard or a snake model.
Adult admission is $8, free for museum members and children 17 and under. This event will take place on Saturday, July 14, from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M. at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson.

Build a Fairy Garden at Greenhouse Garden Center

Release your world of fantasy and imagination by attending a Fairy Garden Workshop at the Greenhouse Garden Center. This workshop will give guests a tutorial on building their very own Fairy Garden, in only a small patch of space of a container. The cost to attend the workshop is $6. Guests are welcome to bring their own containers or purchase one at the Greenhouse Garden Center, along with Fairy Garden accessories. Refreshments will be provided.

Art project 'Visualizing Change' at Lake Tahoe's Sierra Nevada College through July 27

The Lake Tahoe Science Consortium collaborated with University of Nevada, Reno’s Department of Art to create “Visualizing Change,” a photographic art expedition intended to convey concepts in environmental restoration at Lake Tahoe to the scientific community and general public. The exhibit is located in the Prim Desert Research Library at Sierra Nevada College at Lake Tahoe’s Incline Village. It features photography and oil painting contributions from eight noted artists and is free and open to the public through July 27.
