The weekend is here and you’ll find plenty to do in Carson City and the surrounding valleys. Run from zombies in Virginia City as the REDRUN obstacle race returns. Find the perfect pumpkin at the annual Seeliger Elementary Pumpkin Patch. The long-awaited Animal Shelter has been built and is now home to adoptable pets waiting for a home: take a tour at their open house after the 10 a.m. ribbon cutting. Downtown you’ll find the wine walk, a rummage sale at the Veterans Memorial Hall, and the Fall Vintage Market at Due Sorella. Toast the season at Fandango: Oktoberfest has returned. Labor Day Weekend Highlights

Carson City:
Saturday – Monday: Take a ride on the Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine at the Nevada State Train Museum. Rides begin approximately every 40 minutes, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Fares are $8 for ages 12 and over; $4 for ages 4 to 11 and Museum members; and FREE for ages 3 and under.

Grab your cape, mask, and special side-kick and head to Tumbleweeds Gymnastics in Minden for their Superhero 5/10K. Hunt for underwater treasure at Sand Harbor with the High Desert Divers, all divers and snorkelers are invited. The Ferrari Hill Climb continues today in Virginia City if you feel the need for speed. Galaxy Theater brings another movie classic to the big screen today. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘The King and I’ 60th Anniversary Event plays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The kids deserve some fun for surviving their first week back at school, and Carson City delivers. The first annual Northern Nevada Family Fun Day takes over Mills Park with music, a kids zone, activities, food, raffles, and much more. Check out the Bowling Blast Off at Carson Lanes for a Car Show, bowling specials, and fun. Once the sun sets, Washoe Lake State Park offers a basic astronomy lesson and some celestial viewing. SUNDAY: Jazz and Beyond Music Festival Final Day

Are you ready for the new school year? One last weekend of summer break before the kids of Carson City head back, so make the most of it. Jazz and Beyond takes it up a notch in its final few days with eight hours of non-stop music downtown. Western Nevada College new soccer team plays its first home game today against Folsom Lake Community College. Head to Carson High for the inaugural ‘A Place to Shine’ Show and Shine for fun for the whole family. Keep reading, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The weekend has arrived and there are festivals everywhere. A Basque Festival and Picnic can be found in Gardnerville. Bowers Mansion hosts a Bluegrass Festival for the 31st year. This weekend, I attended the final Levitt AMP concert for the summer at the Brewery Arts Center. Boy, was it fun! But, it also sparked a few connections for me which will result in business meetings this week. This, to me, is networking.

This is no sleepy Sunday. Genoa will be a fun place to explore with their monthly Sweet Sippin Sunday stroll and Art in the Park. Jazz and Beyond Music Festival continues with four bands out at the Silver Saddle Ranch in conjunction with a celebration of 20 years of the Quality of Life Initiative. As I stare at this blank Word document, which will fill with words, I remember back to when this column first debuted in April of 2014. I was so grateful to have an audience, particularly an audience as wonderful as those who live in and around Carson City.

I can understand if your plans for the weekend include sitting half-naked in front of a swamp cooler with an icy beverage. It has been quite roasty these last few days. Let me, however, attempt to lure you out with this weekend’s event list; there is plenty of fun to be found around the valley. Some of your options even include air conditioning and icy beverages.

SATURDAY:

Sunday is the last chance for celebrity sightings at Edgewood Golf Resort in at south shore Lake Tahoe as the American Century Celebrity Championship tournament comes to a close. Learn about the legacy of Douglas County’s Dangberg family from the rancher’s grandson, author Steve Archard. Locals enjoy a special price on the Virginia and Truckee steam train, or the McKeen Motor car at the Nevada Railroad Museum.

SUNDAY:

I really hope I’m not required to choose a favorite event. I would be hard pressed to choose between the Nevada Day Parade and the annual Taste of Downtown. Luckily, I can adore them both, and for much the same reason. They are a celebration of community, of Carson City, of our historic downtown and all that it has to offer. In addition to 'The Taste', the Brewery Arts Center goes country with the Southern Drawl Band on its outdoor stage, and Madam Curry leads another downtown Ghost Walk. Summer nights were made for outdoor concerts. Bring a chair and enjoy All Hat, No Cattle at Dangberg Home Ranch Historical Park. The annual Reno Corvette Club Show and Shine will give you something to drool over.
