Local author, Janice Oberding, will be the featured speaker for the March Nevada in Small Bites brown bag lunch. Aside from those who were incarcerated there, she is one of only a few people who have spent an entire night at Alcatraz.

Nevada’s chance at history fell just short in a 83-76 loss to No. 5 ranked San Diego State on Saturday at Lawlor Events Center. It would have marked the program’s first-ever regular season home win against a Top-5 opponent.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the South Carson Complete Streets Project groundbreaking ceremony, the International Film Festival held Friday and Saturday at the Carson City Community Center and Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie weekend with door-to-door cookie sales. Heading into the backend of the work week, events lined up Thursday include day 1 of the 7th annual International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center, a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a free information session on the legal and financial aspects of long-term care hosted by Carson Tahoe Care Center, the Carson City GOP will host a meeting to discuss precinct organization, plus trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and a lecture on women’s suffrage movement history in Nevada. Every year Carson City’s Leisure Hour Club recognizes local not-for-profit groups that excel in supporting the greater Carson City community. On Feb. 19 the club donated $500 to the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society. Glen Whorton, President of the NSPPS, accepted the donation and said that the donation will contribute to making the prison open to the public.

The first European to see America, so far as we know, was a Norseman named Barney, somewhere around A.D. 986. Barney was wading ashore, holding his shoes, when he encountered some Native Americans who were not in a good humor that particular morning, and they gave Barney the bum's rush. So he absquatulated (cut stick) in his dinghy, and rowed like crazy for home, anywhere but America.

Nevada Commission for Women and the Nevada Women’s Suffrage Celebration Committee formed to help facilitate collaboration among organizations in Nevada to celebrate and commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment. As part of her Carson High School Senior Project graduation requirement, student, and committee member, Chloe Walt is working to educate Nevadans on the suffrage movement and the historic importance of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

Dale Poune will perform at Bella Vita Bistro, plus comedy at the Carson Nugget, the Nevada Caucus on Saturday, an open house at the historic Foreman-Roberts House, a Latin-themed concert at the community center and more. The Virginia City Silent Riders are a group of volunteers who represent the western frontier which was often a dangerous and lawless place. When justice needed to be served, there wasn't always a Sheriff and Judge. Instead, there were honorable and righteous men and women who stepped in to deliver swift justice. These groups were known as 'vigilance committees', and they existed across the west.

CARSON CITY — On the heels of an incredibly successful 2019 season and due to popular demand, V&T Railway has begun early ticket sale booking for the 2020 season. As with prior seasons, the 2020 season will include vintage steam train rides from Carson City to Virginia City, Toast of the Canyon wine and beer trains and the popular Polar Express in addition to other themed and special event trains.

The Carson City Historical Society will be holding an open house at the Foreman-Roberts House (the Yellow House), 1207 North Carson Street, Carson City this Sunday, Feb. 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. The Foreman-Roberts House and the Carriage House will both be open for tours.

CARSON CITY — A new museum as well as recreation, entertainment and dining opportunities will bloom this spring in Nevada. From the opening of the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum in Carson City to the debut of new restaurants in Las Vegas, Nevada delivers uncommon experiences this season.

Ever spend some time watching high school students having fun? They do it so naturally. There is no lack of excitement happening at Carson High School, and one of the more amazing aspects of this high school is everyone is invited to attend every event.

Stuart Rathbone first learned about Donner Pass after he moved to Northern Nevada from the UK five years ago. As he got to know the story, he became increasingly fascinated with the scale of the journey over the Sierra, and the scale of the engineering involved in opening that route to traffic.

CARSON CITY — Efforts to secure voting rights for Nevada women began as early as 1869 — just five years after statehood – but it wouldn’t be until 1914 that male voters passed the state’s women’s suffrage amendment.

I've long wondered how the marathon run came to be 26 miles in the first place. So I did a little research and found the history to be fascinating. It all started, like so many other events in history, after tossing back a few beers, away back in 490 B.C.

A 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested on three alternative sentencing violations as well as possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, and driving without a valid license.

According to the report, Special Enforcement Team deputies were patrolling in an unmarked police vehicle in the area of William and Stewart when they witnessed a man seated upright in the driver seat of a vehicle who continued to duck up and down in the driver’s seat.

Fortunate Strangers is a West Coast band featuring Scottish and Irish songs. The band combines the experience of three performers from the San Francisco Bay Area and the High Sierra. They will be performing Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

Three were arrested Wednesday by the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team for suspicion of drug trafficking after a vehicle search at the Department of Parole and Probation led to the discovery of 14.9 grams of methamphetamine.

Nothing adds to the history of a time, an event, a place or an object more than becoming a part of that history and the Nevada State Museum in Carson City is making sure the history of the Carson City Mint will continue for generations to come.

As part of its celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint — Mint 150 — the museum is hosting Kids Minting Days on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 8-9. Children 17 and younger are admitted for free and each child will receive a commemorative copper medallion memorializing the Mint’s 150th anniversary.

A northern Nevada developer announced plans Wednesday to build a Hyatt Place hotel at The Summit in South Reno.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — Construction is set to begin in late May on the renovation and re-imagination of facilities at Spooner Lake State Park west of Carson City. A collaboration between Nevada State Parks, Nevada State Lands and the Tahoe Fund has been successful in securing funding and donations to complete plans for the 35-year-old park.

On Tuesday, visitors to the Nevada State Museum sat in the front row of history to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint. Just as it did 150 years ago, the Mint’s Coin Press No. 1 pressed silver coins, complete with the famous “CC” mint mark.

Heading into Tuesday, the capital city will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint with events throughout the day. Other activities include a morning and evening walk hosted by Muscle Powered, a dinner fundraiser for the Roman family at Pizza Factory, a community dinner and meeting invite to the Order of Eastern Star, a showing at the BAC of the 1941 film classic "The Lady Eve" and a concert featuring the Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with violin soloist Elizabeth Pitcairn at Shepherd-Sierra Lutheran Church.
