True crime, paranormal writer Janice Oberding featured speaker at Nevada State Library and Archives luncheon

Local author, Janice Oberding, will be the featured speaker for the March Nevada in Small Bites brown bag lunch. Aside from those who were incarcerated there, she is one of only a few people who have spent an entire night at Alcatraz.

Nevada gives No. 5 San Diego State a run in heartbreaker

Nevada’s chance at history fell just short in a 83-76 loss to No. 5 ranked San Diego State on Saturday at Lawlor Events Center. It would have marked the program’s first-ever regular season home win against a Top-5 opponent.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the South Carson Complete Streets Project groundbreaking ceremony, the International Film Festival held Friday and Saturday at the Carson City Community Center and Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie weekend with door-to-door cookie sales. Heading into the backend of the work week, events lined up Thursday include day 1 of the 7th annual International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center, a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a free information session on the legal and financial aspects of long-term care hosted by Carson Tahoe Care Center, the Carson City GOP will host a meeting to discuss precinct organization, plus trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and a lecture on women’s suffrage movement history in Nevada. Carson City Leisure Hour Club recognizes Nevada State Prison Preservation Society

Every year Carson City’s Leisure Hour Club recognizes local not-for-profit groups that excel in supporting the greater Carson City community. On Feb. 19 the club donated $500 to the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society. Glen Whorton, President of the NSPPS, accepted the donation and said that the donation will contribute to making the prison open to the public.

Nevada Commission for Women and the Nevada Women’s Suffrage Celebration Committee formed to help facilitate collaboration among organizations in Nevada to celebrate and commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment. As part of her Carson High School Senior Project graduation requirement, student, and committee member, Chloe Walt is working to educate Nevadans on the suffrage movement and the historic importance of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

The Virginia City Silent Riders are a group of volunteers who represent the western frontier which was often a dangerous and lawless place. When justice needed to be served, there wasn't always a Sheriff and Judge. Instead, there were honorable and righteous men and women who stepped in to deliver swift justice. These groups were known as 'vigilance committees', and they existed across the west.

I've long wondered how the marathon run came to be 26 miles in the first place. So I did a little research and found the history to be fascinating. It all started, like so many other events in history, after tossing back a few beers, away back in 490 B.C.

Carson City man arrested for drug charges in the same parking lot he was arrested in the month before

A 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested on three alternative sentencing violations as well as possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, and driving without a valid license.

According to the report, Special Enforcement Team deputies were patrolling in an unmarked police vehicle in the area of William and Stewart when they witnessed a man seated upright in the driver seat of a vehicle who continued to duck up and down in the driver’s seat.

Trio jailed for meth trafficking, drugs found in vehicle at Carson City parole and probation

Three were arrested Wednesday by the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team for suspicion of drug trafficking after a vehicle search at the Department of Parole and Probation led to the discovery of 14.9 grams of methamphetamine.

Nevada State Museum continues 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint with weekend activities for kids

Nothing adds to the history of a time, an event, a place or an object more than becoming a part of that history and the Nevada State Museum in Carson City is making sure the history of the Carson City Mint will continue for generations to come.

As part of its celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint — Mint 150 — the museum is hosting Kids Minting Days on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 8-9. Children 17 and younger are admitted for free and each child will receive a commemorative copper medallion memorializing the Mint’s 150th anniversary.

Big changes ahead at Spooner Lake State Park with facility renovation, re-imagination
