Skiers and boarders know when it comes to predicting snow at Lake Tahoe, a wing, a party and a prayer never hurts.

Prepare yourself for a snow dance at the alter as the annual “Pray for Snow” party will happen on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at Fresh Ketch Restaurant in South Lake Tahoe. There will be live music, dancing, beverages and an avalanche of prizes.

Nevada Day kicks off this morning with annual the Nevada Day Parade, with the theme being "100 Years of Aviation" to go along with the Silver State’s admission to the Union in 1864.

Retired Lt. Col. Dick Rutan of the U.S. Air Force serves as Grand Marshal for today's celebration. He was picked to coincide with the theme, which marks a history-making flight of daredevil pilot William Ivy Baldwin west of Carson City, where he soared to 4,675 feet, the highest ever at that time.
 

The Nevada Appeal today has the story of a missing historical marker. You know those blue markers in the shape of Nevada that dot the landscape? Sometimes they go missing, either through theft or vandalism, or they’re removed during the course of nearby construction. Sometimes they are put back in place after the construction is done, as was the case with the marker in front of the Carson City Courthouse on Musser.

Under a proposed state budget plan, four of Nevada's museums operated by the Division of Museums and History would close, including the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, said Peter Barton, acting administrator for the Division of Museums and History.

Other museums on the proposed state budget chopping block are the Nevada Historical Society in Reno, the state's oldest museum which opened in 1905; the Lost City Museum in Overton; and the Nevada Northern Railway Passenger and Freight Depot in East Ely.

If you’re looking for old-fashioned Halloween events, you’re in luck. Two big events will be held in Old Town Dayton on Oct. 29.

Jan Mackenzie of Reno was the winner of the Marilyn Monroe Look-a-like contest on Saturday during Dayton Valley Days. The annual street fair's theme this year is the 50th anniversary of the making of the "Misfits" starring Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe, which was filmed in and around Dayton.

Music, parades, and plenty of fun are in store as the 22nd Dayton Valley Days kicks of Saturday and Sunday.

The two-day event features more than 100 food, music, arts and crafts booths, plus historical demonstrations and many other attractions.

Festivities will be at Old Town Dayton. A pancake breakfast by the Kiwanis Club begins at 7 a.m. both days. Festivities run from 9 a.m. to dusk on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Dayton Valley Days on September 18 and 19 will be more than a fun family event. The annual street fair will also benefit several local nonprofits that add to the quality of life in the Dayton Valley.

One of those nonprofits is Central Lyon Youth Connections (CLYC), an organization that offers a number of free programs to enhance positive youth development. Director Michele Watkins explained that CLYC includes Project Success, Volunteer Connections, Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws and service learning projects.

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad will extend its 2010 season to include new “Colors in the Canyon” train rides and will continue Saturday rides through Dec. 18.

The “Sisters in History Route” between Carson City and Virginia City was set to operate through Oct. 31, Nevada Day but due to popular demand as evidenced by many sold-out weekends, the season has been expanded for an additional six weeks, officials announced today.

Dayton Valley Days Committee is welcoming entries to both the general parade on Saturday, September 18, and to the Pet Parade on Sunday, September 19, 2010. This year’s parade will feature retired Nevada State Archivist Guy Rocha and well-known Dayton Valley rancher Kay Winters as Grand Marshals. AUSTIN, Nev. — It’s not often you’ll find a classic historic mining town full of options for the more active traveler. Austin, Nevada is not only a living ghost town and a cultural heritage get-away but it has a multitude of adventurous options including hiking, mountain bike trails and more. Reno artist Erik Holland, who has created 22 paintings of Austin, Nev., historic buildings, is being honored at the Nevada Historical Society with a show and opening reception on Friday, Aug. 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Changing Gallery at the Nevada Historical Society Building across from the Fleishman Planetarium at the back of UNR Campus in Reno.

Ely, Nev. – The Nevada Northern Railway is not your usual traditional museum with stationary buildings, equipment and trains that may not even tie to the history of the area.

Come join the fun on a cool summer evening when the Carson City Historical Society hosts their annual Ice Cream Social. Special ice cream and cookies will be available for $4 per person — and children attending will be able to build their own birdhouse courtesy of Jim DeMagistris of Woodworking Specialties. The evening will be filled with music as David Bugli's "Millennium Bugs" who will play during the event. The Ice Cream Social is on Saturday, Aug. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m.

CARSON CITY – For the first time since 1992, Nevada voters will find no question on their November ballot that qualified as the result of a citizen’s initiative petition, the secretary of state’s office has reported.
The deadline for submitting the required number of signatures to county clerks passed Tuesday with no petitions presented in any county. Three petitions to amend the state Constitution were in circulation.

Back on the tracks again, the V&T Railroad kicked off Saturday with a near-sold out day, ample sunshine and a promising full-steam-ahead summer.
"We had a couple of seats left, with quite a few tickets sold for tomorrow," said Candy Duncan, executive director of the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Today went very smoothly and everyone was excited about going on that first ride of the season."

A team of athletes, many of whom are wounded Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, will leave from Golden Gate Bridge on Saturday for World T.E.A.M. Sports’ inaugural bike trek across America called Sea to Shining Sea. The group will arrive in Carson City on May 28 on their way to their Virginia Beach, Va., destination.

LAKE TAHOE — The “South Shore Summer Series” launches the season with a weekend of live music, culinary delights, sternwheeler race, concerts and competitions stretching across the shore from Camp Richardson Resort on the west to Zephyr Cove on the east. Recognized for its combination of scenic beauty and outdoor recreation with value-added vacations, entertainment and dining options, Lake Tahoe dives into summer as the recently designated No. 2 Destination and No. 8 place in the U.S.

Bob Nylen, Curator of History at the Nevada State Museum will continue his series of lectures depicting Nevada's rich historical past with Letters from the Nevada Frontier. CARSON CITY — It was 'all aboard' the historic McKeen Motor Car V&T No. 22 on Sunday for dozens of railroad enthusiasts as the Nevada State Railroad Museum celebrated a milestone 100th anniversary commemorating the iron horse's arrival to the Carson City railroad.

The celebration was at the platform of the historic Wabuska Depot. Numerous local, state and federal officials and noted railroad historians participated in the event, trading stories and history references, and taking turns riding the car.

The Bernhard family, donors of the car, were the honored guests.

The Carson City Shade Tree Council will be hosting its annual Arbor Day Celebration on April 30, 2010. The celebration will be held in the park across from the State Library on the corner of Stewart and Musser Streets and will begin at 5:30 p.m. and is scheduled to last an hour.

CARSON CITY – Nevada has crafted the proper policies of low taxes and small government that has helped it weather the current recession, and these same policies have positioned the state to respond favorably when the economic recovery takes hold, according to a report released today by the American Legislative Exchange Council.
