Tales of Nevada Past and Present premieres Saturday on 1270-AM
VIRGINIA CITY — Longtime Virginia City businessman Hugh Roy Marshall brings history to the airwaves and the Internet beginning Saturday.
Tales of Nevada Past and Present premieres at 1:00 p.m. PDT on 5,000-watt on the regional affiliate 1270-AM. The program will be available live to online listeners at www.KBZZ.com. The on-air talk line is (775) 823-1920.
"The rich future of Virginia City and the legacy of the legendary Comstock Lode cannot be fully realized without a continuing focus on all the things that led us here," Marshall says.
"I'm now in my fourth decade as a Nevadan and we are facing our toughest times in 80 years. The solutions can only come from the same place they always have — the people of Nevada. We have the brainpower, the software. It's up to our leaders to install the hardware to make it all work. There are no better qualified Nevadans to help me launch this program than Roy Powers and Randy Burke," Marshall said.
"Roy became legendary as an innovative thinker in promoting Nevada during his long career as a leading executive in the golden age of the gambling and tourism industry. I look forward to his expert opinion on what we need to do to regain Nevada's edge," Marshall said.
"Randy's success in special event production has few equals," Marshall added. Burke was for many years executive director of the Hot August Nights nostalgiafest and currently produces the annual Street Vibrations motorcycle event.
Powers launched the Reno Junior Chamber of Commerce and served as president of the Reno Chamber of Commerce. He was one of the original organizers of the Reno Air Races and served on its board of directors for 13 years. He has been honored as Reno's Young Man of the Year, Reno's Civic Leader of the Year and was initiated into the Air Race Wall of Fame.
Well before stepping back from the arts of advertising and promotion, Powers began to acquire prestige in the world of fine art.
He spent his few leisure hours drawing and painting portraits of well-known urban landscapes and became a popular featured member at the Artists Co-op Gallery of Reno.
He retired in 1998 and now wields his brushes at his Reno home studio.
The Nevada Historical Society recognized Powers' work as a significant historical statement and, in 2001, organized a three-month display of his paintings at the NHS gallery on the University of Nevada campus. He markets his work at www.RoyPowers.com.
Hugh Roy Marshall built and opened the Silverland Inn & Suites (SilverLandUSA.com) in Virginia City in 2006. He also owns and operates The Marshall Mint and Museum on the VC boardwalk. Since 1996, the jewelry and mint press operation has marketed handcrafted gold and silver medallions and a wide range of other collectibles created from Nevada precious metals.
Marshall also has a hand in developing Silver State precious metals through his mining interests both on the Comstock and in other areas of Nevada.
The Marshall Mint was featured on Main Street Northern Nevada last Saturday on KTVN TV-2. Another segment will air on May 22 at 4:30 p.m. More information about the program may be obtained by contacting Jim Webster at (775) 379-4787 or John O'Brien at (775) 224-5838.
