Free fishing across Silver State coincides with Saturday's Discover Nevada State Parks Day

Free Fishing Day is your one chance during the year to get hooked for free. In Nevada it always falls on the second Saturday in June. This year, Free Fishing Day is this Saturday, June 11. No license or trout stamp is needed for adults or children.

Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra area fishing report May 19 and beyond

Hello fellow anglers, I wanted to give you a small report on the higher lakes in the Alpine County area. Although down in the valley the temperatures have been in the low 40's to mid 70 degrees. The higher lakes are still in winter, spring mode. Temperatures are in the low 30's and not rising until after mid day and may only hold a mid 60 degree temperature for an hour or so. Be prepared when you travel to the higher elevations.

Carson City weather: Weekend activities may be soggy with rain in the forecast

Showers and thunderstorms may develop Friday afternoon around Carson City with the potential for heavier bands of precipitation arriving early Saturday morning, a National Weather Service forecaster said.

National Weather Service meteorologist Zach Colby said the brunt of Friday’s weather will be north of Interstate 80, possibly moving southward into the afternoon and early evening.

The Carson River is having its first healthy water year in quite some time and dozens of large fish were frolicking in a shallow wetland near the river on Thursday.

Nevada Humane Society program provides inmates with motherless kittens

Picture this. A group of male prisoners (big, burly guys) and a group of tiny, tabby kittens (weighing about three ounces), meeting each other for the first time at the Warm Springs Correctional Center. It’s early evening, the sun is setting and everyone is settling in for the night. It’s calm and quiet.

Suddenly the men are alert, turning all warm and fuzzy, cooing and using baby talk — they are melting at the sight of newborn kittens. Don’t judge, you would react this way too.

Celebrate Earth Day with one of the world’s important climate scientists, Dr. Charles Goldman. He will speak about Lake Tahoe and a world water crisis from climate warming of inland waters.

The event is sponsored by the Western Nevada College Foundation. It will be held Friday, April 22, 7 pm at Marlette Hall at the Carson City campus.

Charles R. Goldman is a Distinguished Professor of Limnology ­­ Emeritus Department of Environmental Science and Policy UCD President, World Water and Climate Foundation who is known around the world.

Hello fellow anglers, my fishing partner Tom Blotter and I had a challenging time at the Hook Line and sinker Derby last weekend at Topaz Lake. On the lake by 6 am Saturday, and the fishing was on. We had 20 fish day for each of us.

Nevada Humane Society update on Carson the Cat: Lifesaving journey continues

Last week we began the lifesaving adventure of Carson, a handsome, young tabby cat who was hit by a car in Carson City.

His injuries were severe — bruising and scrapes all over the body, a broken jaw and two broken front legs. We fixed up his jaw here at our Nevada Humane Society veterinary clinic and then sent him to a local specialist—Sierra Veterinary Specialists. We told you his outcome was good, but we left you hanging for the next step of his adventure. Well, wait no more.
