Carson City firefighters knock down brush fire at Pheasant and Fairview
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 11/07/2013 - 8:29pmThe Carson City Fire Department was called to a brush fire Thursday night in the area of Pheasant and Fairview. The fire was reported by several 911 callers. It was knocked down within minutes before it reached any structures.
The call came into dispatch at 8:26 p.m.

Free screening of Vietnam War documentary today at Western Nevada College

Pedestrian struck by vehicle at Carson and Fairview, Care Flight ordered

A Care Flight air ambulance was ordered.
Lake Tahoe leaders hail House introduction of Restoration Act

The legislation, sponsored by Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei, co-sponsored by California Representative John Garamendi, and Nevada Representatives Joe Heck, Dina Titus, and Steven Horsford, would continue another 10 years of federal government investment in the Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program.
Minden man faces DUI charge after found allegedly passed out in traffic lane
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 10/31/2013 - 8:31amA 45-year-old Minden man was arrested Wednesday at the intersection of South Carson and Old Clear Creek Road in Carson City after fire department personnel found him passed out in the southbound lane of traffic. He faces misdemeanor charges of DUI and open container.
According to the arrest report, Carson City sheriff deputies were called at 11:49 a.m. to the location by fire department personnel who observed a man passed out in a vehicle in the No. 1 southbound lane of traffic.
Prepare for smoke as Forest Service plans controlled burns in Carson Ranger District
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 10/28/2013 - 4:04pmLogs, stumps and limbs piled across 565 acres of public land in eight Carson Ranger District project areas of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will be burned in the coming weeks, the U.S. Forest Service announced Monday.
Residents to the north, south, east and west of Carson City can expect heavy, dense smoke in the pile burn areas that will cause impacts, albeit short term, on air quality levels. Prescribed burn notices have been posted near homes and subdivisions, alerting occupants about the planned prescribed fire operations.
Lake Tahoe ski resorts rejoice with first significant snow of the season

Anticipation for additional snowfall along with summer investments pays winter dividends at Tahoe South this season. Millions of capital expenditures at the three area ski resorts this year will complement revitalization efforts throughout town to create new options on where to stay, play and dine during the 2013-14 season.
Wind, rain and possibly snow in the forecast for the next few days

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for the region as a cold front pushes through. Strong winds and low humidity through Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties and the Sierra will accompany the front Sunday afternoon and evening with wind gusts of 50 mph possible in the Lake Tahoe basin and the Sierra front. Gusts to 65 mph are possible in wind prone areas.
Bicyclist injured at Kings Canyon and Ormsby; one hurt in water heater explosion
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 10/26/2013 - 6:52pmCarson City fire and rescue and sheriff's deputies responded Saturday night to a bicyclist reported to be seriously injured in the area of Kings Canyon and Ormsby.
The call came into dispatch at 7:35 p.m as a bicycle crash. A Care Flight medical helicopter has been dispatched. The victim is described as a man in his 30s.
An ambulance will transport the injured cyclist to the Carson City Airport where he will be taken by Care Flight to Renown Medical Center in Reno.
Modern LED sign at Carson City Community Center gets high tech welcome

The $100,000 message board not only gives a refreshing welcome as motorists drive along William Street, but provides key information about events and happenings throughout Carson City.
Teenage girl struck by vehicle on Roop and Evalyn taken by CareFlight
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 10/22/2013 - 4:27pmUPDATE: A Carson City teenage girl was the victim in a pedestrian accident at Roop and Evalyn streets near Governor's Field early Tuesday night, authorities said. The girl, believed to be 16 or 17, was flown by Care Flight to Renown Medical Center in Reno. Her condition is unknown.
Carson City Community Center LED sign to be lit Wednesday
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 10/22/2013 - 9:00amThe Carson City Community Center is getting new signage thanks to the efforts of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and other partners that have worked with the city to obtain much need modern signage in front of the Community Center.
As most of the city private businesses have gone to LED signage, the 50-year old sign in front of the Community Center has remained a relic. Staff had to use a ladder to change the message. Beginning Wednesday, all it will take is a computer programmer to change the messages.
Carson City fire crews snuff out afternoon mobile home fire
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 10/21/2013 - 3:11pmA mobile home received significant damage on Monday after a structure fire in the area of Poole Way near Lompa Lane in Carson City. No one was home at the time.
Children in an adjacent home told a Carson City sheriff's deputy that the mobile was occupied by their grandmother and that she was not home at the time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Carson City fire crews respond to motor home on fire at Brown and Gordon streets
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 10/19/2013 - 9:44pmFire crews in Carson City responded late Saturday night to a motor home on fire in the area of Gordon and Brown streets.
The call came into dispatch at around around 10:30 p.m. Firefighters arrived to the vehicle emitting a heavy amount of smoke. As of 10:41 p.m. firefighters had the fire out and were mopping up. No injuries were reported.
The owner of the motor home was at the scene as was his dog, according to dispatch. Both were reported to be fine but now without a home.
Southbound traffic on Carson City freeway now open at Arrowhead after 3-vehicle crash

UPDATE: As of 8:36 p.m. Those working the scene of an accident on the Carson City Freeway say it will be at least 30 minutes before the southbound lane is open. Emergency crews responded to a 3-vehicle crash with injuries Saturday, first reported to Carson City dispatch at 7:36 p.m.
End of federal government shutdown brings return of Lake Tahoe area Forest Service prescribed fires
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 10/17/2013 - 12:05pmWith the end of the federal government shutdown, prescribed fire operations by the U.S. Forest Service will continue Friday near South Lake Tahoe.
Forest Service fuels management crews will conduct prescribed burns near the intersection of Pioneer Trail and Al Tahoe Boulevard. Crews expect to burn approximately one acre per day, weather and conditions permitting. Operations are expected to last through next week.
Carson City open burn fire permits now available at area fire stations

The Carson City Fire Department allows the open burn period as a way to provide residents an opportunity to dispose of accumulated weeds and yard debris. In order to make this a safe endeavor for those involved, the fire department requires burn permits with a valid permit number before burning will be allowed. Permits must be obtained no less than 24 hrs prior to conducting an open burn.
Juvenile taken by Care Flight following pedestrian accident at Fairview and Gordon
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 10/14/2013 - 6:54amUPDATE: A teenage boy was flown by Care Flight Monday morning to Renown Medical Center after being hit by a vehicle at Fairview and Gordon in Carson City, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol and the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
The accident was reported at 6:43 a.m. The condition of the boy, who is approximately 14 to 16 years of age, is unknown at this time, said Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Scott Farmer. The parents were contacted, and the driver of the vehicle met with NHP troopers after arriving at the Carson CIty Sheriff's Office.

Normally operated only on summer holiday weekends and for Santa Train, the historic and picturesque locomotive will pull the train, giving visitors a rare opportunity to ride the rails and photograph the equipment in fall splendor.
Carson City firefighters respond to structure fire on Wilma Way
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 10/11/2013 - 11:13amCarson City firefighters were called at around noon to a working structure fire at a home located at 2555 Wilma Way. Firefighters at the scene report smoke coming from inside the garage area. Two dog were reportedly rescued in the fire.
According to dispatch reports via police scanner, firefighters had made entry into the home as of around 12:10 p.m. to see if anyone is inside and found the two dogs. Carson City Animal Services was called to respond.

Carson City rescue team delivers firefighter struck by rolling log to Care Flight
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 10/09/2013 - 1:54pmUPDATE: Care Flight has taken an injured firefighter to Renown Medical Center in Reno after he was hit by a rolling log Wednesday afternoon near the top of Spooner Summit. The condition of the firefighter is unknown at this time. He was aided by Carson City Fire Department personnel who were called to the top of Spooner.
Rescue teams hiked into the backcountry to reach the injured man and then took him to an ambulance that then delivered him to the waiting helicopter at around 3:40 p.m.
Northern Nevada Fire Wives to hold Saturday barbecue in Carson City

The Northern Nevada Fire Wives BBQ is Saturday, Oct. 12 from 11-2pm at Carson City Fire Station 51 at 777 South Stewart Street in Carson City. The barbecue costs $5; raffle tickets are $1 each.
The barbecue will have a bounce house, face painting and other family-friendly activities, including a visit by Smokey Bear. All proceeds benefit the Northern Nevada Fire Wives organization.

As federal parks remain dim, Nevada State Parks stay open

The outdoor event featuring the band Notch 8 takes place on Friday, October 4 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. outside of the Firkin & Fox restaurant on Third Street in Carson City. The event was rescheduled due to hazardous air conditions caused by the California Rim Fire.
