Barbecue fundraiser draws awareness to Northern Nevada Fire Wives nonprofit
Fire safety, flaming barbecue burgers, face painting and face time with Smokey Bear were the orders of the day at the first Northern Nevada Fire Wives fundraiser barbeque at the Carson City Fire Department on Stewart Street Saturday.
The non-profit Northern Nevada Fire Wives was organized earlier this year through the efforts of Renee Pedrini and other local firefighter wives, to assist career, volunteer and seasonal firefighters and their families following an incident in which a firefighter friend of her husband’s was seriously injured, and four other firefighters died during a 5-alarm motel fire in Houston, Texas.
The new organization will provide support to local fire service personnel and their families in cases of tragic losses or injury, but also wants to extend that support on a national level and to assist the local community during emergencies as resources permit.
The Northern Nevada Fire Wives will also hold a Fire Wives Turkey Trot in conjunction with KAIA Fit on Thanksgiving morning. Registration for the 5K run is $30 for adults, $25 for those 18 and younger. Registration can be made on the Northern Nevada Fire Wives Facebook page here, or from 5-7 p.m. on November 26 at State Farm Insurance at 810 North Nevada Street in Carson City.
