Senator Square: First week of school a blast at Carson High School

Carson High School Principal Gavin Ward stood at the north entrance high-fiving students as they entered high school, some of them for the first time. In fact, counselors, teachers, and other administrators stood at each of the school entrances welcoming students to the best high school in the state, hyperbole aside.

Just about two years ago, the Bulldog Cyber Cafe quietly opened its doors in the Grocery Outlet shopping center beside Bulldog PC Repair. However, they quickly outgrew their space, and three months ago, the new Bulldog Cyber Cafe opened its doors at 251 Jeanelle Street in Carson City.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days, including Hot August Nights Kickoff Rallies in Virginia City, history walks at Mormon Station Park, pickleball at the Carson City MAC, concerts at the Brewery Arts Center and TJ’s Corral, a Muscle Powered Sunday morning bike ride and more!

Carson City Pediatric Dentistry accepting appointments for new Dayton practice

Carson City Pediatric Dentistry is now accepting appointments for its new Dayton practice, Dayton Pediatric Dentistry, which opens Tuesday, Aug. 6. The office is located at 6 Pinecone Rd, Ste #2, in the Smith’s Shopping Center.

Dayton Pediatric Dentistry, the only pediatric dentist provider in Dayton, celebrates its grand opening with a family friendly open house event on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 1-3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Office tours and snow cones will be provided by Dayton Pediatric Dentistry, and Dayton Valley Lion’s Club will be on site to provide goodie bags and face painting for kids.

Activities lined up include a Muscle Powered hike, a cultural awareness conference at Carson Valley Inn, an artist reception at Artsy Fartsy, art classes at Rustically Divine, Thursday Cruise Night, the first "Third Thursday" farmer's market and barbecue in Dayton, a presentation on the Apollo Lunar Mission at the Carson City Library and more.

DAYTON — The new "3rd Thursday" events in Lyon County aim to bring groups, families and communities together with family friendly activities. The first event kicks off in Dayton this Thursday July 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. with music, family activities and games, a free BBQ by Healthy Communities Coalition, and information booths by Lyon County libraries, Human Services, Community Chest Inc, Community Roots and Shoots, etc.

Heading into Father’s Day weekend, there's plenty of jam-packed activities around the Carson City region. There's Flag Day ceremonies at the Nevada Veterans Memorial and at the Elks Lodge. The Stewart Father’s Day Powwow happens Friday to Sunday and features hundreds of American Indian dancers, drummers artists and cultural enthusiasts. Lace up the tennis shoes for the Eastside Historical tour of the capital city hosted by Muscle Powered. Journey of Hope returns to Western Nevada College at 5 p.m. to settle into the evening. Muscle Powered Trash Mob cleaned up at East Silver Saddle Ranch on Saturday

We met in the large parking area at East Silver Saddle Ranch on Sierra Vista Lane and spread out to clear trash between the Carson River and Sierra Vista Lane. Things have improved a lot since the improvements have been put in by Carson City Public Works and Parks, Recreation, and Open Space but we were still able to find about 360 pounds of trash.

Carson City physical education teachers participate in biking, walking safety training

On Monday, Feb. 4, 2019, Carson City physical education teachers opted in to take a comprehensive training class about biking and walking safety.

The Western Nevada Safe Routes to School (WN-SRTS) program, with the help of the Nevada Department of Transportation, conducted a “train the teacher” class for physical education teachers in the following schools:
