Carson City public safety agencies stage shooting scenario exercise

The first of two “active assailant response” exercises was staged Saturday at the Carson City Courthouse. The scenario involved two shooters in camouflage who walked through the three story courthouse, shooting city employees and members of the public in their path as they went courtroom to courtroom.

The shooters were taken out with gunfire by Department of Alternative Sentencing officers and Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies within two minutes of the scenario, but not after leaving a bloody path of fatally and critically injured victims.

Outdoors with Don Q: Ask for snow, wish for snow and pray for snow

No matter how you do it, either by asking, wishing or praying, we need snow. Lots of snow. Feet of deep snow this winter. Elaine and I took a ride last Sunday to take some photos in Alpine County, and we also took our fishing equipment if we decided to fish somewhere.

We were undecided as to where to fish, but thought that we would check out some of the waters along State Route 88 and at other spots. As it turned out, we did not fish and for a darn good reason.

Reply to Peter (good grief...!) Hennessey

I can't help but agree with Peter Hennessey when he says he sees a "deep, irreconcilable mental and psychological divide between the two Parties (sic)." That is manifestly the case.

In 2010 I volunteered for Rory Reid's campaign and made the mistake of mentioning that I had been a registered Republican for 34 years. Predictably I was given a list of supposedly "persuadable" Republicans to canvas, which I dutifully did.

What Works: Are energy vampires burning you out?

Energy vampires — they are everywhere, in people, in places, and in projects. They attack when you least expect it and suck the life blood out of you. After they are done, you are exhausted, less productive, and ready for a nap. But how do you know when you are working with or on an energy vampire? Here are a few ways to spot one.

What Works: Love Yourself First

Love her or hate her, Rupaul has some wise words when it comes to loving yourself. “If you don’t love yourself, how the hell are you going to love someone else?” The wisest example I have found on loving myself came from a set of airplane instructions. “Put your own oxygen mask on first before you attempt to help someone with theirs.”

Deer hunting: Nevada's fifth season

Editor's Note: The following satire piece was written by Jerry Vance, longtime Carson City fitness and exercise instructor.

It’s Hunting Season! Yesterday there were 13 deer in my yard. Do you know what that means? It’s hunting season. Here in Northern Nevada we have five seasons, the normal four plus a special one; when an outdoor workout means climbing hills in search of four footed animals with “racks.”

Column: Cyclist rights and responsibilities when the rubber meets the road

Bicycling has become a very popular form of transportation, exercise and sport. We have seen a sharp increase in riders around the Carson City area and have observed both good and bad bicycle operators.

Many laws are in effect to protect bicyclists as they travel down the road but if you are a rider, there are some laws that apply to you as well. A cyclist is required to ride on the right side of the roadway so as to flow with traffic.

Off-Road Vehicle Contribute to Flood Damage in One Johnson Lane Neighborhood

A mountain is being destroyed, and the neighborhood below it is being polluted by off-road vehicles in Douglas County.
Hot Springs Mountain is on BLM land, and it towers right above the neighborhood known as Johnson Lane.
The mountain has been cut up by a web of trails created by off-road vehicles.
Heavy use of the trails pulverizes the soil and the trails become loose and unable to support even foot traffic yet alone the vehicle traffic. The off-road operators then cut new (bypass) trails. Ultimately the new trails get pulverized and the process starts again.

Barbecue Ribs and Christianity On A Lazy Summer Day

It started out as one of those lazy days in Carson City, where it’s not too hot, but it’s not too cold!

It’s just right!

But, when the mercury begins to creep into the triple digits, I am glad I take advantage of the cooler temperatures early in the summer season, because I hate to cook on my patio when it is 100 degrees in the shade!

This is the reason I go straight to my favorite BBQ restaurant for my semi-annual feasting of pork ribs, with corn bread, cole slaw and beans, coupled with my favorite adult libation.

Cliven Bundy And His Followers Are Not Patriots!

Event Date:
December 27, 2013 (All day)

I am always amused by those individuals who attach themselves to the United States Constitution in such a way as to be literal in its interpretation, wrap themselves in the Flag of our Nation, and call themselves “true patriots” and the defenders of our “rights and liberties”.

Apparently, if I disagree with their definition of “true patriotism” then I am something less than a citizen or patriot incapable of defending our “rights and liberties”.
