The Green New Deal: Doubling Down on Past Mistakes
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 02/12/2019 - 5:50pmMy first full-time job after college was assistant city engineer in Urbana, Illinois in 1972. I worked on my liberal Democrat green interests: bikeways, undergrounding communications and power lines, better sewer systems, sidewalks, traffic, planning and zoning codes.
I learned a key lesson in those matters. Its breadth and importance would become clearer as my career progressed.
One day the public works director, a crotchety old conservative Republican, said: “You want bikeways, underground lines, sidewalks and all those things? Well, it really is easy and cheap.”

Column: Our Answer to Question 6: No! (Opinion)
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 10/03/2018 - 10:44amQuestion 6 in the coming election asks whether Nevada’s Constitution shall be amended to require that, beginning in 2022, all Nevada sellers of retail electricity increase the amount of “renewable” energy resources they use so that at least 50 percent of their electricity comes from those resources by 2030.
We have long supported increasing diversity in energy supplies via economic development of renewables. But the mandates proposed by Question 6 are a big mistake and we strongly counsel voting against it.

We're Number 2, or 3 - But That's Not Good
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 12/06/2017 - 9:32amNevada was hit hardest among the 50 states by the Great Recession of 2007-09 and was the slowest to recover. It was the last state to see its total employment levels return to pre-recession figures – even though our population growth had already resumed.
Since nearly everyone agrees that high employment is good, you’d think a public policy change that increases employment is something politicians would embrace. From experience, we’re skeptical, but we offer here evidence for just such a change: reforming state occupation licensing laws.

An Attempt to Make Sense of Politics Today – Part II
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 08/30/2017 - 11:50amIn our last column, we discussed the Civil Rights movement that hugely changed America in the 20th Century and greatly redeemed the failure of our Founding (allowing slavery) and the Democrat and KKK legacy of bigotry, oppression and discrimination known as Jim Crow.
We pointed out that government, plus the social, economic and political Establishment, was the enforcer of slavery and Jim Crow. And that the reforms overshot their mark, leading to pernicious reverse discrimination that now travels under the euphemism of diversity.
