Our socialist healthcare system is predictably out of control with rising costs, lowered services and inevitable bankruptcy for our nation. To solve the artificially created shortages of affordable health care we need to repeal Obamacare (hopefully before it kills too many people) and then we need to restore market incentives to lower the cost of health care using the following ten steps:

I: Eliminate Taxes and deregulate American health care.

II: Increase grants and loans to create more health care doctors and workers.

LAS VEGAS, NV (July 24, 2017) – Registration is now available for the 2017 Nevada Economic Development Conference (NVEDC) scheduled for Sept. 11-13 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The conference will feature exclusive tours and track sessions that include the state’s leading experts in the fields of agribusiness, economic development, energy, infrastructure/transportation, manufacturing, tourism/gaming and workforce development.

Among the great social changes that drove economic growth in the latter half of the 20th Century was the large-scale entry of women into the labor force. With more Americans working, family lifestyles changed rapidly.

But this growth of the female labor force required families to find ways to care for their children while both parents were at work. Although some parents could rely on grandparents or others to watch their kids, that option was unavailable to many.

Just when things could not get any better, the Star Wars Club, initiated by CHS students, hit light speed at CHS. To date, CHS Advisor, physics, astronomy, heliophysics coordinator, and head freshman football coach Jim Bean said the club has had two meetings so far.

On Wednesday, April 19, the excitement of storytelling will be evident when local author William ‘Bill' Hill shares his craft and stories with members of the Carson City Leisure Hour Club.

William Hill is a naturalized northern Nevadan, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana and a product of many places and stories. Bill has lived in numerous locales, including Prairie Village, KS, Bristol, TN, Dallas and Denton, TX, and in south and north Lake Tahoe, NV. Currently he creates from the foothills of the eastern Sierra.

We teach our children key lessons to prepare them for life. So, recently, Ron explained to daughter Karyn another episode of: How the World Works.

March is National Women in History Month and the Douglas County Historical Society will be honoring five women for their significant historical contribution to the quality of life in Douglas County. DCHS has reached out to the community asking for nominees that fit this category yearly since 1999.

The history gathered is archived at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in the VanSickle Research Library and with the Women In History Project, Reno.

Last week Congressman Amodei and Senator Heller introduced legislation to “prevent the threat of executive action designating or expanding national monuments without Congressional approval or local support.” Their legislation would add Nevada to Wyoming as the only states exempt from presidential designation of National Monuments, except as authorized by Congress.

An interesting and engaging lecture about our most intimate attire, underwear, will be featured at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City on Thursday, Jan. 26 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey counties could see a collective population increase of 25,670 from now through 2035 with a significantly higher growth rate in Washoe County, according to a state demographer report released Tuesday that projects population for the state and its counties.

Doors open at 5:30 PM for a tour of Adams Hub, 111 W Proctor St., Carson City to begin The Capital Branch of the American Association of University Women's monthly meeting. There is an optional meal for $10,and then a speaking presentation from Kate Marshall, former State Treasure and Elliot Parker, Professor of Economics, U of Nevada, Reno on "Women in the Workforce; Issues of Equity". A short business meeting will follow.

To legalize or not to legalize, that is the question we must answer on Nov. 8.

Or, is it?

I’ve taken my time this year to deliberate over the matter of recreational marijuana legalization — in spite of my general instinctive opposition to mind-altering substances — consulting with area experts on drugs and drug policy.

Following hours of interviews, reading and research, my conclusion is that there is something more sinister at stake here over Question 2 than simply the legalization of an illicit drug.

Nevadans will vote in coming days on legalizing the recreational use of marijuana here, as four other states have already done.

Both advocates and opponents have made strident cases to support their views. However, the two camps cite data that appears to conflict. We have mixed views on this initiative, but we are interested in informational clarity.

The $10,000 four-year Dave Cook Memorial Scholarship has been established by the Elaine P. Wynn and Family Foundation in partnership with the Nevada Public Education Foundation for an incoming freshman pursuing an Education degree at a Nevada System of Higher Education institution beginning in fall 2016.

Funeral services will be held May 6 in Carson City for Ruth Aberasturi, a lifelong advocate for children with disabilities who served as director of special education with the Carson City School District for more than 30 years. She died April 20, 2016. Aberasturi was 85.

With the national economy still unsteady, many local businesses owners, agricultural business owners and community leaders in Nevada are concerned about the impact on their businesses.

Carson City Treasurer Gayle Robertson, citing accomplishments and anticipating more, announced this weekend she will run to retain the city government office she holds.

Robertson, appointed treasurer in April, 2015, by the City’s Board of Supervisor, this election year is seeking a two-year term starting in January, 2017. The City governing board appointed her to the office over two others after Al Kramer left as Treasurer to assume a post in state government.

In the early 1970s, as assistant city engineer in Urbana, where I attended the University of Illinois, I worked on bikeways, sewer systems to minimize pollution, promoting underground power and telephone lines, and other “green” projects. Later, as a university research engineer, I worked on many other environmental, energy and policy issues.

This is a picture of an unsung hero of Carson City, though few know of him. No, it's not really Santa under a rainbow but it is a picture of a simple hard working business owner who, like countless other business owners, makes this city work as part of the free enterprise system. This man is out before dawn cleaning and preparing the property where he runs his business and is still at work long after dark every day throughout the year.

David S. Cook reached the end of his journey Oct. 12, 2015 at Renown South Meadows Hospital in Reno. Born May 24, 1950 in Las Vegas to Robert E. and Jeanette (Stanton) Cook, he was fourth generation Nevadan. He graduated from Bishop Gorman High School in 1968.
