Sheriff Ken Furlong is pleased to announce that Carson City Sheriff’s Office Reserve Commander Tom Crawford was the recipient of the Governor’s Points of Light Award, Volunteer Manager of the year.

Commander Crawford has been responsible for the Uniform Reserves of the Sheriff’s Office since 2005 and made significant contributions to the community as a whole. During his tenure, Tom has overseen the activities of over 150 reserves, many of whom who have gone on to become full time Deputy Sheriff’s here in the community, and surrounding jurisdictions.

Easter is here and with it the excitement of searching for eggs dyed in various colors and designs. There will be quite a few activities going on this weekend and traffic will be heavy at times. Plan ahead and leave early so that you have plenty of time to make it to your event.

It’s a good weekend to be a kid in Carson City. Easter egg hunts, bounce houses, fun and games abound: I’ve made family friendly events easy to find by putting them in bold in the list. It’s a good weekend to be an adult, as well, with the Downtown Business Association wine walk and a few adults-only egg hunts.

WINE WALK! Are you excited? Of course you are. Last month broke records with the number of participants at the Downtown Business Association wine walk, so let’s keep up the momentum and head downtown for Carson City’s best monthly event. The flowers are blooming and that makes our capital city that much more beautiful to meander through. Fun fact: It’s National Walk Around Things Day, so downtown is the perfect destination. Grab your friends and family and plan on a great afternoon.

Busy weekend ahead! It’s a wine walk weekend in addition to the Easter festivities, but don't let Friday pass you by. Head to Sassafras tonight to catch the Trippin King Snakes or Living the Good Life for music by Jamie Rollins. If it’s laughs you're after, First Friday Improv at the Brewery Arts Center will have you in stitches or head to the Carson Nugget for comedy night with this week’s funnyman, Huck Flyn.

A long period of mostly fair and warm weather will be coming to an end this weekend as a series of low pressure systems moves into the California Sierra and some spillover into Western Nevada.
The greatest impact will likely be to the western Sierra, where potentially a foot of snow could fall along the passes over the course of a few days, according to the National Weather Service. However, snow amounts at Lake Tahoe and rain or snow in Western Nevada likely won’t be as dramatic, forecasters say.

It is now April. There is still hope for some late season storms, but the flowers blooming around town are ready for spring now. In this area, the weather seems to be whatever you aren't prepared for, so don’t put away those winter clothes just yet, and keep an eye on the weather report: a hard frost can undo the hard work you've put into your garden.

Celebrate the Easter season with the family. Western Nevada College’s Latino Club will host the annual Easter Fiesta event on Saturday, April 4, 10 am to 3 p.m., at the Carson City campus, 2201 West College Parkway.

Alll are invited to enjoy two Easter Egg Hunts, as well as a number of games, including face painting and a coloring contest. There will also be a chance to take a photo with WNC’s Wildcat mascot, Willy.

Game tickets cost only $1 each, or six tickets for $5.

SATURDAY, APRIL 4:
Head on down to Dayton for a big Easter Egg hunt starting at 10 a.m. at Abandoned Treasures, 5000 US HWY 50 East. Enjoy photos with the Easter Bunny, Pony Rides, a raffle, prizes, a bounce house, and vendors.

Beginning on Monday, March 30, Heavenly Mountain Resort at south shore Lake Tahoe will offer mountain access via the Heavenly Gondola in the Heavenly Village for the remainder of the season and Stagecoach Express through Sunday, April 5.

All mountain operations on the California side will close March 30, a week ahead of schedule. The resort will operate 11 lifts, accessing 27 trails. Mountain Operations staff continue to closely monitor and assess conditions daily. At this time the resort is still planning on closing on April 19.

Homemade Easter baskets for infants to adults are available. Prices range from $5-$30. They are available at 2650 Carmine St. #9 (in the back) in Carson City. Baskets are available for sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the following dates: March 29, April 3, April 4, and April 5.

The 2015 EGGstravaganza is underway Saturday under blue skies at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center in Carson City. The event runs now through 3 p.m. at 1600 Medical Parkway. Expect food, fun, games and gifts, the Easter Bunny and plenty of eggs to collect at this free community event.

The sun is shining, the flowers blooming, the birds chirping, the wind gusting, and Carson City is hopping! Easter fun can be found this weekend at the annual EGGstravaganza at Carson Tahoe Medical Center, the Children’s Museum, the Carson Mall, and the Brewery Arts Center.

Head over to Mills Park for the Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration, complete with military vehicles, exhibits, and more. For demonstrations from soldiers with an even older history, the Nevada Civil War Volunteers will be in Dayton Saturday.

Washoe Lake State Park is offering a variety of events and hikes in April. There will be an Easter Egg Hunt, a guided walk through the wetlands and a wildflower walk. Participants will learn about the natural and cultural history of the park and surrounding area.

The Carson Tahoe Health Auxiliary is sponsoring a Spring Book Fair and Sale in the lobby of the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. Good news from the North Pole: Santa Claus is coming to the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada on Friday Dec. 12 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Bring your cameras because photo-ops and crafts are included in the $5 per child admission. A Carson City man was arrested early Thursday morning on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge after a bizarre verbal exchange with law officers outside the Carson City Sheriff’s Office on Musser Street.

Two people were jailed Friday on felony drug charges during an investigation that involved the Tri-County Gang Unit and the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team.

Rebecca Peltier, 31, was arrested at 6:44 p.m. in the 100 block of Corbett Street in Carson City on suspicion of maintaining a drug house, and possession of methamphetamine, both felonies. A 42-year-old Reno man, Jason Leon Baker, was also arrested on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance.

This past weekend we celebrated Easter, a holiday filled with family, renewal and hope for the future. The hallmark of the holiday, for kids, is the Easter egg hunt, where they run as fast as they can and look for eggs with hidden treasures inside.

Over two thousand years ago, Roman tax collectors using torture, murder and slavery, humiliated, scourged and crucified a Jewish Rabbi that today is revered by a billion or more followers as teacher, Rabbi, Christ, Messiah, or Son of God. But no matter what we call the mystery of Jesus, each Easter we celebrate the resurrection of faith, hope and love as taught by the greatest Rabbi who ever lived. On Easter we celebrate the triumph of good over evil and of the light over the darkness in our troubled world.

Get an early start on Easter egg hunting Friday when Skyline Estates Senior Living hosts its Easter egg hunt for all ages at 2 p.m. Organizers invite children, parents, and grandchildren to attend. Skyline Estates Senior Living is located at 2861 Mountain St., in Carson City.

The third annual Egg-stravaganza takes place Saturday, April 19 at 10 a.m. at Mark Twain Elementary School in Carson City.
This 16,000+ candy-filled egg hunt is a FREE event for Carson City children. Aged zones are set up for toddlers through 11 years old, with a separate zone for special needs children. Even the Easter Bunny will be there for pictures and to celebrate with the kiddos.
