CARSON CITY — In a continued commitment to preserve and protect Nevada’s water resources, the Nevada Department of Transportation was approved for termination of its consent decree in the United States Nevada District Court.

The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California Native TANF Program is hosting a winter coat drive Oct. 1 through Nov. 2, 2018.

Please donate new or gently used, clean coats, hats, gloves and snow pants. Items will be distributed to families in need on Nov. 8, 2018 at the Douglas County Washoe Tribe of NV & CA Native TANF Program office, 1248 Waterloo Ln, Gardnerville.

CARSON CITY — Question 3 seems to be the hot ticket item on the ballot this year. In short, if Question 3 is adopted, electricity monopolies would be prohibited by Nevada law, allowing energy customers the right to choose who their energy provider is, and generate their own energy for resale.

SILVER SPRINGS, Nev. — The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties gathers for a public meeting featuring guest speakers and discussion of regional issues on the second Thursday of each month at 9 a.m. This month’s breakfast meeting takes place on Thursday, Sept. 13 at the Silver Springs Community Center in the Lahontan meeting room at 2945 Fort Churchill Street.

Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada will host their ultimate balloon scavenger hunt adventure on Sunday, September 9 from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m at the Great Reno Balloon Race in Rancho San Rafael Park.

Girls will meet balloon pilots, help clean the park, and join other Girl Scouts from across their council. Everyone is welcome to join the fun including family, friends, and not-yet Girl Scouts. And yes – this is a free event!

With daily news reports of gang shootouts and knifings in cities all across America, I thought it would be good time to update our community on where Carson City stands when it comes to dealing with local gang issues. As we all know, growth brings challenges and sometimes those challenges include attracting those less than savory characters causing discomfort in an otherwise sedate and perceivably safe community.

True or false…When you’re selling a house, you should bake cookies before a showing or an open house.

I guess you could say the answer is a hard and fast “true” because, after all, it can’t hurt. Who doesn’t like the smell of freshly baked cookies?

But it’s also kind of false…

It isn’t like you can Betty Crocker your way to a sale, let alone at the highest price possible. Your entire house still needs to be appealing. A batch of cookies isn’t going to hide bad odors enough or divert people’s attention from a messy house that needs repairs.

If only it were that simple…

RENO, NV – At Nevada Field Day on Sept. 8, visitors will be treated to a variety of free activities and giveaways, and even some tasty food samples.

As part of this year’s activities, nationally acclaimed local food advocate Mark Estee will present a cooking demonstration at 10 a.m. Estee has been featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, and in Esquire Magazine.

This summer marks the 10th anniversary of Lake Tahoe’s Watercraft Inspection Program. Under the program, every motorized watercraft is inspected to ensure it is clean, drained, and dry and not carrying aquatic invasive species before launching at Tahoe.

The beaches can get thrashed with trash after the popular holiday weekend festivities. Help us keep our beaches clean! We provide cleanup materials, refreshments and a prize. Ride your bike to receive a special gift. Bring your reusable water bottle and friends!

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Transportation has substantially completed a project to stabilize a roadside slope on U.S. 50 near Cave Rock at Lake Tahoe.

It’s a happening day around Carson City. The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival makes an appearance downtown with Under the Radar in the Comma Coffee Courtyard, followed by the Mile High Jazz Band in McFadden Square. Head up the short hill to Silver City for a special hands-on Engineering activity for kids. Join local author Cindy Sutherland for this month’s edition of the Brown Bag Lunch Series at the Nevada State Library and Archives. Freshman, and their parents, are welcomed to Carson High School this morning for orientation, an overview of policies, and a tour.

I’m not even going to speculate on the air quality, but please use your best judgement when choosing your activities and there may be some cancellations that I am not aware of. Downtown has a full day of options, but the back roads may be a little more difficult to navigate due to construction projects. The great music that awaits will be worth the hassle. It is finally Friday. As August melts away, it brings us closer to the new school year. Carson High returning students are invited to the Senator Kick-off this morning to get their fill of back-to-school updates. Families will love the Movie in the Park; bring a blanket or chairs and come prepared to enjoy ‘Coco.’ Three days of high-flying fun begins today at Heritage Park in Gardnerville as the Splash Dogs competition gets underway. You will always find live music around town on Fridays, but during the Jazz and Beyond Festival, it seems like music is everywhere.

A 46-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for felony suspicion of attempting to break into a vehicle at a south Carson City Park and Ride area, a sheriff’s deputy said.

Looks like another great day to stay indoors. The Carson City Library has several activities planned today, and one of them might be what you’re looking for. Story time this morning is for the little ones. Just about everyone is welcome to participate in their weekly Lego Club build. Families will enjoy movie night; just make sure to register online if you’re planning on seeing Peter Rabbit with them this evening. The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival is in full swing, so you’ll find plenty of music around.

UPDATE 12:08PM: As of noon Monday, Carson City and Douglas County air quality is now in the "Very Unhealthy" category, according to the Air Quality Index, triggering a health alert meaning everyone may experience more serious health effects. Carson City's index reading was 222 and Gardnerville, 272.

Smoke from regional fires has caused the air quality in the Gardnerville area of Douglas County to reach the "hazardous" stage Monday morning, with an Air Quality Index reading of 410, according to AirNow.gov, while Carson City has reached the "unhealthy" stage.

Noting a potentially dangerous fire weather situation with gusty winds and low humidity ahead, the National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning from Friday afternoon to Saturday night for Carson City, the Sierra and throughout much of the entire western and northern Nevada region.

CARSON CITY — The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, in conjunction with the Nevada Appeal, is selling dining cards featuring coupons from more than a dozen local restaurants. Proceeds will help fund tween and teen leadership programs, Torch and Keystone Clubs.

The Carson Comedy Club presents The Clean Comedy Challenge inside the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson Street in Carson City, Aug. 9-11. Doors open up at 7:15 p.m. Show starts at 8 p.m.

The Trippin King Snakes take the stage in McFadden Plaza for a free all-ages show. Break a leg to the kids of Youth Theater Carson City; they open their production of ‘Bye, Bye, Birdie’ at the Community Center this evening.

A building permit valued at $750,000 has been purchased through the Carson City Building Division by Quick Quack Car Wash, a Roseville, CA-based service chain with 50 locations in five western states.
