Community Leaders of the Year Benefit

The event will be on May 18 from 5pm to 9pm at the Governor's Mansion. The event serves to honor Charlie and Karen as two of the unsung heroes of our community. The event also benefits the Ron Wood Family Resource Center. Congressman Mark Amodei will serve as auctioneer.

Strings in Schools concert to feature music of Jay Ungar and Molly Mason
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 05/02/2013 - 6:12amCarson City Symphony's Strings in the Schools led by Carson City Symphony Education Director Sue Jesch present a festival featuring the Music of Jay Ungar and Molly Mason on Saturday, May 11.
The concert will be at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa Drive, Carson City. It includes a workshop from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for string players of all ages, a potluck lunch, and a public concert beginning at 3:00 p.m. Admission to the festival and the concert is free, donations welcome.
Nevada Performance Academy enrollment begins Wednesday

In an effort to ensure high quality teaching and learning, and because of predicted space constraints, the Academy will limit first-year enrollment in the blended components of its academic program, which is face-to-face instruction and participation in extracurricular classes.
Jason Collins, first openly gay NBA player garners former NFL coach, Raider kicker support

"I don't think the NFL is going to have a problem," said Herm Edwards, former Kansas City Chiefs head coach, now an NFL analyst for ESPN. "Is there going to be a vote of confidence in the locker room? For some of the younger and immature players, but the veteran players — they get it."

Carson City road report for April 29 through May 5

There will be road work on Long Street between Roop Street and Molly Drive. No delays are expected.
There will be intermittent lane closures on Fairview Drive from Edmonds Drive to Carson Street beginning Sunday, April 28, and continuing into the week due to roadway maintenance. There will also be intermittent closures on Longview Way from Ash Canyon Road to Kings Canyon Road. Minimal delays are expected.
Women to Women Nevada with Katherine Lima

The membership includes 90 women who meet regularly throughout the year to generate money through raffles in which children and families receive Christmas gifts.

Davis Observatory.

Teen in Tuesday Pleasant Valley crash dies from injuries

New Administrator Named at the Lodge Assisted Living and Memory Care Community

Ms. Haack has worked at The Lodge for more than two years as the Wellness Coordinator.
Haack has extensive experience working with elders in the Carson City and Carson Valley areas. Prior to joining the Lodge she worked at the Carson Valley Residential Care Center in Gardnerville for many years and has also worked as a private in home caregiver. She believes that working with elders is a true calling.

Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. adjacent to the Caucus Deli, the LXS displays Evans’ work April 29 through May 17. Managed by the Artist Services Program of the Nevada Arts Council, the Legislative eXhibition Series has provided a spotlight on the Silver State's breadth of contemporary and folk artists during the biennial session since 1985.

Native Pollinator Workshop

Nevada College Fallon Campus. The workshop will be followed by a tour of the National Resources Conservation
Service’s Great Basin Plant Materials Center in Fallon.
Cost is $45. Workshop topics include pollination economics and biology, bee-friendly farming, pollinator habitat and restoration, and more. Participants will learn how to identify and protect nesting sites and how to design habitats for native pollinators.

The instructor is Dawn Lewellyn of Clearwater Florida, CTRS, WSI, AI, KIT Trainer of My World Therapeutic Recreation Services, LLC.

Washoe Valley teen gravely injured in Pleasant Valley rollover

As of Wednesday morning, Heather Brown, 17, is on an artificial life-support system at Renown Regional Medical Center as result of the extensive injuries she suffered in Tuesday's accident, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen.

Douglas County woman shot in abdomen; brother injured in domestic dispute

The woman and her 35-year-old brother, who had contusions to his head, were taken to the hospital and treated for injuries.

Carson City woman with stun gun in her purse jailed on felony drug charges
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 04/22/2013 - 10:41amA 42-year-old Carson City woman was jailed Saturday and faces two felony drug charges and a charge of being a felon in possession of an electronic stun gun.
Patricia Louise Barkley, was arrested at 12:11 p.m. April 20 on East Nye. According to the arrest report, officers stopped a vehicle based on information that the owner faced a warrant for his arrest.
Carson City firefighters knock down brush fire
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 04/22/2013 - 8:15amA brush fire was reported this morning in the area of Clear Creek and Center as was a possible gas leak near the Stewart Community Center. Carson City firefighters were called at around 9 a.m. near the intersection of Gibson and Center for the rush fire and, nearby, a strong odor of natural gas at the Stewart Community Center.
The gas leak was confined to a stove. The brush fire was knocked down at around 9:30 a.m.
A fire investigator was called.

Because of continued construction of the Carson City Freeway project, Snyder Avenue is closed between E. Roland Street and Center Drive. Center Drive and Silver Sage Drive are also closed south of Appion Way. Bennett Avenue is closed between Center Drive and Bigelow Drive.

Seats open on Carson City visitors bureau board; historic resources commission

There is an open seat on each board. With the CCCVB, the term will run through July 2015. On the Historic Commission, the term is for four years, expiring July 2017 and is for a person professionally qualified in building construction.
Nevada Department of Public Safety on alert following Boston bombing
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 04/15/2013 - 4:39pmThe Nevada Department of Public Safety announced it has put in place additional safety efforts and reminds the public to alert law enforcement of any suspicious activity.
In a news release issued late this afternoon, DPS said law enforcement agencies statewide take all direct and indirect threats very seriously and will continue to be proactive with security and enforcement strategies.
As a precautionary measure, the DPS is collaborating with federal officials to monitor and implement additional safety efforts after today’s tragic event in Boston, the release states.
