Utility work for various projects will occur on several local roads. There will be flagger controlled traffic with minor delays possible at the following locations:
— Fairview Drive from Highway 50 to Edmonds Drive.
— Edmonds Drive from Fairview Drive to Snyder Avenue.
— Carson Street from Washington Street to Hot Springs Road.
— Hot Springs Road from Carson Street to Roop Street.
— Retail Drive from College Parkway to the south end.
College Baseball: WNC Wildcats battle back to make District Finals
Submitted by editor on Fri, 05/17/2013 - 8:52pmWestern Nevada College advanced to the Western District baseball tournament championship round by splitting a pair of games on Friday in Sterling, Colo.
The Wildcats dropped into losers’ bracket with a 4-2 defeat to sixth-ranked Cochise, Ariz., on Friday morning but ousted Lamar with a 9-1 afternoon victory.
WNC (43-19) earned another shot at Cochise behind the pitching of Christian Stolo and Evan Parker, as well as a six-run fifth inning.
Carson City restaurant and food; motel and hotel inspection report

Inspections include convenience stores, restaurants, take out restaurants, retail grocers, a juvenile detention center kitchen, retail food producers and motels.

WNC Wildcats rally to win at Western District baseball tourney
Submitted by editor on Thu, 05/16/2013 - 7:37pmThe situation looked discouraging for the Western Nevada College Wildcats in the second inning of their Western District baseball tournament opener in Sterling, Colo., Thursday afternoon.
Lamar Community College was in command, 5-0, after knocking starting pitcher Brandon Show out of the game. WNC had committed two errors and the Lopes’ ace, Sam Wilson, was throwing the Wildcat hitters off stride.

Carson City Chamber poses questions in survey for residents

After meeting with the Leadership Institute Class of 2013, students at WNC, Chamber members, teenagers at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada and the senior at the Senior Center, the Chamber is expanding its reach to allow residents to respond to two simple questions: Why do we live here and what do we see that our city will be like by the year 2020.
Western Nevada College to graduate its largest class Monday
Submitted by editor on Tue, 05/14/2013 - 4:38pmCARSON CITY — For the fourth consecutive year, Western Nevada College will graduate its largest class in history. The class of 2013 is 505 students strong, with 530 degrees and certificates being issued.
Four students will receive Bachelor of Technology degrees in construction management, and three students will graduate with bachelor’s degrees as part of WNC’s teacher preparation partnership with Nevada State College. The graduates span 60 years, from the youngest at age 17 and the eldest at 77.
Truck slams into power pole, Carson City man taken by CareFlight
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 05/11/2013 - 3:34pmA Carson City man was taken by CareFlight to Renown Medical Center in Reno after the truck he was driving hit a power pole Saturday afternoon at the corner of Musser and Minnesota streets.
The condition of the man is unknown at this time. No other injuries were reported. The accident happened shortly before 4 p.m. The driver was conscious at the time he was taken by ambulance to the former Carson Tahoe Hospital site a few blocks from the accident scene where he was picked up by air ambulance.
The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.
Carson City road report for May 13-19

Beginning Monday, May 13 through Friday, May 17, Lompa Lane will be closed between Highway 50 East and Menlo Drive.
Detours will be marked. In addition, the JAC bus routes 2A and 2B will be re-routed to follow the detour route and the bus stops on Lompa Lane and Menlo Drive will be temporarily closed during the road closure.
Women are 'buying in' to home ownership

In 1968, the federal Fair Housing Act was passed making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin when renting or selling a home. In 1974, the Fair Housing Act was amended to prohibit housing discrimination on the basis of sex. Prior to that time, women (as well as minorities) found it nearly impossible to obtain credit or to buy a home.

WNC Softball: Wildcats Bask in Glow of First Postseason Win
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 05/10/2013 - 4:53amThey did it. Western Nevada College’s softball team earned the program’s first postseason victory with a 2-0 win against Colorado Northwestern in the Region 18 tournament on Thursday morning in Twin Falls, Idaho.
Sophomore pitcher Ali Lostra blanked the Spartans on five hits and struck out the final two hitters with the potential tying runs on base to secure the history-making victory.
“It was really exciting,” said WNC coach Leah Wentworth. “Along with the first postseason win, another first was that I don’t think we shut out anybody this year.”

The Wildcats will face the Coyotes of the College of Southern Nevada at 4 p.m. PST, Wednesday, for their first game in the double-elimination tournament.

February job fair lands work for 43; next Carson City employer and jobseeker event is June 14

"We felt it was a huge success with the 36 employers attending and 619 job seekers; this is more than 14 percent of the job seekers who became employed as a direct result of the job fair," said Lynn Ellis, WorkForce Program Case Manager for Carson City Health and Human Services.
Ellis gleaned the statistics after taking a survey of employers six week after the Feb. 22 job fair held at the Carson City Senior Center.
Nevada Rural Housing Authority Mourns Death of Board Commissioner, Former Chairman, Vice Chairman, Tom Cook

Saturday is 21st Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

All the food collected goes to local organizations that help feed the hungry in our community. This year Advocates to End Domestic Violence, F.I.S.H., and the Ron Wood Center will be participating.
Carson City road report through May 12
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 05/05/2013 - 7:48amHere is the Carson City road maintenance and construction report through May 12: The outside westbound lane of William Street will be closed Sunday from Carson Street to Plaza Street due to construction activity on the building adjacent to the roadway.
The northbound lane on Fairview Drive will be closed between Fifth Street and Edmonds Drive due to roadway maintenance. Detours will be marked.
There will be road work on Long Street between Roop Street and Molly Drive. No delays are expected.

Earlier this year the Carson City woman was diagnosed with gliobalstoma, the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumor. She found herself at age 24 in the fight for her life.
