Carson Tahoe Health officially welcomes Sierra Surgery Hospital to Community-Wide Health System

Carson Tahoe Health is pleased to announce that Sierra Surgery Hospital is now formally integrated into the Carson Tahoe Health System. Sierra Surgery was the first facility to open 10 years ago on the Carson Tahoe 80-acre master-planned medical campus. It is located next to the Regional Medical Center in North Carson City and has earned numerous industry accolades for patient care and satisfaction.

California End of Life Option bill similar to proposed Nevada 'right to die' legislation

Nevada lawmakers will soon take up right to die legislation, just as California lawmakers are also doing, with a bill having passed through a state senate committee vote last month.

The committee on health cleared the California End of Life Option Act, March 25 on a vote of 6-2. The legislation is closely modeled on Oregon’s Death with Dignity legislation, allowing a terminally ill individual with six months or less to live the right to request and receive a prescription medication to hasten death in certain narrow circumstances.

UNR students, faculty and staff stand up for sexual assault awareness

Since the February release of results from a student survey regarding sexual conduct and safety, a number of efforts to strengthen a supportive campus climate, one with zero tolerance for sexual assault, sexual misconduct and other life-damaging actions, have been put in place at the University of Nevada, Reno.

In March, the University launched a 24-hour Sexual Assault/Sexual Misconduct Hotline, allowing students, faculty and staff to report incidents that occur on or off campus. The caller may remain anonymous if he/she chooses. The hotline phone number is 775-784-1030.

Historic Fourth Ward School Museum exhibit to strike Comstock-era realities of Virginia City

Carson Valley motorcycle chase ends with crash, man facing several charges

A South Lake Tahoe man riding a motorcycle thought he could outrun the law Monday afternoon. But he wound up crashing the bike and faces several charges instead.
Arrested for eluding and speeding, among the charges, was Peter Hall, 50. He crashed the motorcycle on Dressler Road in Carson Valley and was treated for minor injuries, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Pat Brooks.

Virginia City invests $250,000 in new arena and fairgrounds venue

Virginia City’s economic vitality is getting a shot in the arm with the addition of a new event venue designed to accommodate nearly 5,000.

For a place dating back more than 150 years, Virginia City attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Many are drawn to the historic Comstock town for its rich history; many others attend one of the unique events that make up the annual calendar including the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry, the International Camel & Ostrich Races or the Outhouse Races.

Child falls off vehicle on Dori Way, flown by Care Flight in very serious condition; driver a family member

UPDATE 1:32PM: From Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong: At 12:09 p.m., the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Fire/Paramedics responded to the corner of Dori Way and Ester Circle to a reported juvenile pedestrian hit by a vehicle. Once on scene, officers determined that the juvenile was an 11-year-old Hispanic male and the driver of the vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe, had left the scene.

Carson City hosts Strategic Plan open house Monday at Community Center

Carson City residents have two more chances to chime in about the city's strategic plan. You can fill out a survey here or attend the last public open house, Monday, March 30, at the Carson City Community Center Sierra Room, 851 East William Street from noon to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.

Over the past year, the Board of Supervisors, management, and staff of Carson City have developed a draft strategic plan to help guide future investments and priorities.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats hit Bickford but fall to Coyotes

Phil Bickford and his history of being a top-10 selection in the 2013 Major League Baseball amateur draft didn't intimidate Western Nevada College hitters on Saturday in Carson City.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats Come Back to Remain in First

Western Nevada College found its offense just in time Friday, preventing College of Southern Nevada from taking over first place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
The Wildcats plated two fifth-inning runs to tie the score and then tallied five runs after two were out in the sixth to pull out a 9-4 baseball victory to gain a doubleheader split at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

UPDATE: Carson City fire and rescue canceled Care Flight and is taking the driver of the truck that flipped by ambulance to Renown Medical Center in Reno.
The driver apparently went through the Fifth Street travel lane at the roundabout, possibly going too fast, flipping the truck to its side and dumping a load of dirt, garbage and other debris along the roadway.

Harry Reid won't seek re-election

Nevada Senator Harry Reid announced today he will retire from the Senate and will not seek re-election in 2016. The five-term Democrat from Searchlight, Nev., had brushed off questions that he would be leaving the Senate but an exercise-related accident in January appears to have contributed to the decision.
