Spring ahead Northern Nevada gardeners by preparing soil now

Successful Nevada gardeners know that Nevada soils are worth the toil to ensure a great garden. Our native soils are low in organic matter due to low rainfall amounts. In addition, they are more alkaline than soils rich in organic matter. The alkalinity of a soil often interferes with micronutrient availability causing nutrient deficiencies in plants. The good news is that by adding organic matter, our soils can support healthy plants and yield good harvests.

Feeling it the right thing to do, the only thing to do, really, I scratched out a short letter and delivered it to our community hospital.

Pine Nuts with McAvoy Layne: Most amazing gorl had the cheek to tell me I'm a bad speller

What I know about gorls you could put in a gnat's ear. It's not because I haven't tried to understand gorls, I have tried to understand gorls. They make great mothers and grandmothers, I know that. But you show me a man who says he understands middle-aged gorls and I'll show you a big fat liar. Though just because we can't understand gorls does not mean we can't love gorls. There is something comforting and contenting about a gorl's voice, a gorl's laughter.

Pine Nuts with McAvoy Layne: Dateline Red Wing, Minnesota

Red Wing, Minnesota is the cutest town I ever saw. You can't see it without falling in love with it. I wanted to fold it up and take it home with me. While in a wistful mood of late, I've been listening to the music of Miss Dinah Washington, who was on her seventh husband when she died of an overdose of alcohol and weight reduction pills at age 39, so young.

JoAnne Skelly column: Some indoor plants can be toxic to cats

We are getting a new roommate next week — a kitten! We haven’t had a kitten in over 30 years. We have always adopted older cats and lucky for me they didn’t eat my houseplants. However, kittens are like toddlers, always exploring and getting into trouble, so I have to make sure none of our plants can poison a curious kitten.

Your dog probably doesn’t like fireworks; keep them safe inside this July 4

If there’s anything a family dog hates more than not being allowed to put their head in your lap while you eat, its fireworks.

Every year, Rovers, Spots and Fidos across the city howl at the indecency of the human-beloved summer holiday.

This year, while the town gathers at Mills Park in Carson City to watch the annual fireworks, which begin at around 9:30 p.m. please: keep your dogs and cats safe and cool indoors.

JoAnne Skelly column: What’s wrong with my lilac leaves? The answer may be insects

I bumped into my friend Cat at a nursery buying marigolds to solve a problem her lilacs were having. She said something was eating the leaves along the edges leaving sharp-edged cutouts. She said someone swore that marigolds planted around the base of the shrubs would solve the problem.
