As we head into the weekend, there's a chance of rain showers in the valleys and high elevation snow showers in the Sierra Friday into Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday, Jan. 5: Things to do in Carson City

There is a natural phenomenon that takes place each January to February that is celebrated annually in Carson Valley.

The first weekend of the year approaches, and that means our monthly Downtown Carson City Wine Walk. It’s never deterred, come rain, shine, or tornado, so make plans with your friends now. Get a jump on any healthy resolutions by joining Muscle Powered on today’s hike along Prison Hill; just be prepared for the trek and great photo opportunities. Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint has snared touring band, The River Arkansas, to play some Americana roots on their stage; a perfect dinner and show.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada is looking to fill three AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America positions including, Volunteer Coordinator, Program Development and Fundraising Coordinator for a one-year term, which will serve both Carson City and Carson Valley clubhouse locations.

I don’t want to jinx anything, but there are rumors of wet stuff on the way. Granted, the valley will probably just see some rain, but I love seeing our mountains snow-capped. The Epic Rides’ Carson City Off-Road race isn’t until June, but locals can sign up tonight at a nice discount. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office reports 49 arrests during the New Year's holiday weekend beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29 through 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 1 in both Carson Valley and the Lake Tahoe area of Douglas County.

Ease into the new year with something fun. Trivia junkies have two options for showing off their smarts: DJ Trivia at the Fox Brewpub and the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras are both free to play and open to all ages. It’s finally here, the last weekend of 2017. It’s fairly quiet around town, until Sunday night, that is. Today, Muscle Powered is leading a five-mile half-day hike along Prison Hill. Take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather, and join them. The Carson Nugget is hosting three nights of comedy this weekend: catch Myles Weber on the stage tonight. Head’s up. Galaxy Theater usually plays a movie from the past on Sundays and Wednesdays. This week, we get treated to the Christmas Classic, Die Hard. You won’t want to miss that.

During the 12th annual Caregiver Recognition Luncheon on Nov. 29 at the Atlantis Casino Resort in Reno, ten Mission Senior Living (MSL) team members were among 93 caregivers recognized by the Nevada Caregivers Coalition for enhancing the quality of life for those in their care.

Gaming revenue at Carson City and Carson Valley area casinos climbed by nearly 11 percent in November compared to the same time last year, according to figures released Thursday by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Hello fellow anglers. I am happy to say, the winter solstice has come and gone. Meaning, each day now brings one minute longer of daylight. But as we all know, that does not mean it will get any warmer soon. Down here in the Minden and Carson Valleys we've experienced an average of 7 to 10 degree mornings.

High clouds with periods of sunshine and gusty winds are expected this weekend around the Carson City and Lake Tahoe regions, putting a familiar capper on a likely Christmas without snow in western Nevada.

If you’re anything like me, there are still plenty of last-minute preparations for the holiday. Luckily the shops and businesses around Carson City are there with open arms. Find something one of a kind at the Carson Mall Craft Fair, drop it off at the Rainbow Girls Assembly #7 gift wrapping booth, and grab lunch while you wait. Breakfast with Santa at the Fox Brewpub serves as a toy drive for area kids and as no-fuss way to get start the day with a full belly. Read on for a weekend full of holiday happenings.

There are some fairly excited kids throughout the valley. This last Friday before Christmas marks the beginning of winter break. Thursday, December 21 is the winter solstice, making it the longest night and the shortest day of the year. With Christmas just a few days away, the holiday activities are still going strong. Share your wish list with Santa at Red’s Old 395 tonight and you’ll walk away with a free photograph. Your ugliest sweater is invited to make an appearance at the Carson Cigar Company; bring a white elephant gift if you’d like to participate in the gift exchange.

On a morning like this, I realize that I need to ask Santa for some windshield wipers. Stay safe out there, Carson City, the roads are wet. The Carson Library is usually a great place to retreat on days like this, but you’ll find their doors closed for the next few weeks: time for a makeover. If you’d like to check out a book or use the wireless internet, you’ll find a ‘pop-up’ library in the Community Center this week, and in the Adams Hub on Proctor Street next week.

A High Wind Warning is underway for the region as Carson City braces for a fairly quick moving winter storm that is expected to bring 50 to 60 mph wind gusts followed by accumulating snow along the valley floors and 8 to 10 inches above 7,000 feet.

Winter is settling in, even if our mountains are lacking their snowy blanket. It’s chilly out there, but the members of Muscle Powered head out for a walk and a hike every Tuesday unless the rain or snow is falling. Join them tonight for a walk around downtown Carson City to take in the twinkling lights and decorations; there will even be a stop afterward for a warm beverage. If you’d rather exercise your brain, the Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras and DJ Trivia at the Fox Brewpub are your choices.

Carson Valley’s first indoor play-park is cutting the ribbon this Wednesday, Dec. 20 for the official grand opening of Run, Rattle & Roll, an adult-supervised, children’s indoor play-park with a convenient parents’ lounge and healthy snack bar area.

A strong cold front will move through the Carson City region and Sierra from Tuesday night into Wednesday bringing the potential for damaging winds, widespread snow down to all valley floors and very cold temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.
