With March now a memory, all attention weather wise this first week of April turns to a spring storm expected to arrive in the Carson City and Sierra region Friday that forecasters say will bring gusty winds, heavy rain and the potential for flooding along creeks, streams and rivers.

A quick drive around town confirms that spring is on its way. Carson kids have one last day to enjoy their spring break before school resumes and Lyon county begins their break today. On Monday, April 2, the Nevada Department of Transportation will begin the second scheduled construction season of roadway drainage pipe improvements on Kingsbury Grade, State Route 207.

Happy Easter Carson City and surrounding towns. Most of today’s happenings are Easter related, with a spattering of reoccurring events. It's opening day for Carson City BMX. It's two-wheeled fun open to all ages, so go see what all the fuss is about. For the adult crowd, the annual Easter Party at Carson Cigar Co. is a relaxing way to avoid the sugar-addled kiddies. We’ve got a beautiful spring weekend to enjoy. I’d like to make this easy on you: if you are only looking for Easter-related fun, you’ll find it all HERE in my list of everything Easter. Those events are also included in this list, but there is so much more going on. Take a hike with Muscle Powered, get down to some live music, or cheer on your favorite roller derby girl.

The Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT) approved $200,000 in grant funding for infrastructure projects, Nevada Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchison announced today.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada has hired Jon Park of Las Vegas as its AmeriCorps VISTA Fundraising Coordinator and seeks to fill two additional VISTA positions, Volunteer Coordinator and Program Developer.

Easter weekend is just hours away. Let’s get a jump on Easter weekend. Head down to McFadden Plaza this afternoon for kids activities, an egg hunt, and a special showing of the classic movie ‘Easter Parade.’ The beautiful weather is just begging to be celebrated, so join up with Muscle Powered for a hike up to Timberline. Bring a camera, the views of the valley will be spectacular. Happy birthday to everyone that was born in March. The Carson Cigar Company holds their monthly Birthday Thursday celebration tonight with live music featuring the Trippin King Snakes. If you’re in Dayton, swing by 1st and 10 Sports Bar tonight.

Easter festivities are on the way, starting with the Easter Eggstravaganza in the Bob McFadden Plaza on Thursday. You’ll find fun stuff: Easter Bunny photos, brunches, egg hunts, services and more throughout Carson City, Dayton, Douglas, and Virginia City. To make it easier to find something in your neck of the woods, I’ve put in ‘bold’ the name of any town outside of Carson City.

March came in like a lion, and it is going out as a sweet, fluffy lamb. Easter is just a few days away and the fun times and activities for the little ones don’t seem to be in danger of getting snowed out. Find the right egg hunt for your family in my Easter Fun list HERE.

There are not many women owned and managed restaurants and as we end Women’s History Month, we wish to highlight one of Carson’s newest woman-owned eateries certain to be a popular gathering place all year long.

As the days get longer and warmer, it’s worth it to check out the many trails and paths throughout the valley. Muscle Powered, our local hiking, biking, and trail-building group, leads guided hikes and walks a few times every week, including two on Tuesdays. Don’t let spring break be an excuse not to use your noggin. Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras and DJ Trivia at Fox Brewpub are both open to all ages and free to play. You’ve only got a few days to see the Winter Art Show in the Nevada Artist Association Gallery; their new show, ‘Spring has Sprung,’ will open Sunday.

It won’t seem like it today, but spring is on the way. We’ll be seeing sunny days in the sixties by week’s end. If you’re looking for a way to entertain the kids, dollar days at our two bowling alleys make for a fun, yet inexpensive, outing. The Friends of the Carson City Library are hosting a week-long food drive. Bring your non-perishable donations to Browsers Corner Book Store and take a look around. You might find the perfect book for Spring Break.

MONDAY, March 26: Things to do in Carson City

The Carson Water Subconservancy District is hosting a contest to guess what the spring peak runoff will be on the Carson River at the Carson City gauge. The calculation will be based on the daily average cubic feet per second (cfs) flow at the Carson City gauge.

Do you ever wonder about that old stone house at the eastern entrance to Mills Park? Called the Wungnema House it has interesting history. Take a tour today during the monthly open house, and learn more about the early residents of Carson City. As a child of the 80s, I’m excited about this week’s Flashback Cinema feature at Galaxy Theaters. "The Dark Chrystal" was a favorite of mine. If you’ve got kids, or a pang of nostalgia, catch one of the two showings today, or again Wednesday. Read on for more of what's happening today.

The weekend has arrived, and it will be an exceptionally long one for the schoolkids of Carson City: spring break begins Monday. There’s a rumor of snowfall for this weekend, but it’s not expected to be too heavy in the valley. Don’t quote me on that, though, I’ve been wrong before. Break a leg to the Douglas students performing in ‘Game of Tiaras’ this weekend; the show sounds hilarious, but be warned, it’s not for kids. For a family friendly outing, check out Story Time with Suzie at the Nevada Railroad Museum, or photos with the Easter Bunny at PetSmart.

SATURDAY:

We aren’t expecting any rain today, but weather control is well above my pay-grade. The recent downpour filled a few reservoirs around town, including the one at the corner of Roop Street and Little Lane.

Carson City Public Works, Parks and Recreation personnel and emergency managers have been working on flood prone areas throughout Thursday and will continue to do so until the storm is over, officials said this afternoon.

A little rain can’t ruin today’s parade. The UNR Wolf Pack Men’s Basketball team has made it into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Watch the game at your favorite watering hole; you’ll likely find celebratory drink specials. The next phase of Downtown constructions is ramping up. Find out what’s in store for Curry Street at today’s Streetscaping Pre-Construction Public Meeting. Nevada’s Big Give is in full swing. Choose your favorite non-profit and donate what you can; a little can go a long way.

CARSON CITY — In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada kicked off its $25 for 25 campaign, a donor program designed to help the Club achieve long-term financial sustainability.

It’s just unfortunate timing that today has been designated ‘Nevada Moves Day.’ With the heavy rain, it may not be the best time to try your hand at walking or biking to school. A break in the storm this afternoon will make for an easier trek home, but you can always take up the challenge after Spring break next week. The annual Father-Daughter Dance at Carson High is fast approaching, and today is your last chance for in-person ticket sales. Head to the Carson High office between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. if you’ve got cash in hand.

Carson City emergency managers and the public works department posted a short video Tuesday in preparation of a storm expected to arrive beginning Wednesday, March 21.

Come out for a fun night of dance and big band music. The Brewery Arts Center is presenting the Rosebud’s Dance Band on Saturday, March 24 at 7 p.m. in the Performance Hall.

A strong storm from the Pacific known as an "atmospheric river" will push through the Sierra and Carson City regions Wednesday through early Friday, bringing periods of gusty winds, heavy valley rain and heavy Sierra snow, according to the National Weather Service.

It’s hard to believe that this is the first day of spring: we had nicer weather in January. Expect the next few days to bring a mix of wet stuff, and probably some gusty winds our way.

It looks like Miracle March has arrived. Another storm is a few days away, and the University of Nevada has made it to the Sweet 16. Take advantage of the break in the weather and have some fun. Get your swing on at Carson Lanes or take the stage at the Fox Brewpub’s Karaoke night. Get a dose of toe-tapping old-timey music with the Hoboes at A to Zen. You’ll find them every Monday lunchtime at the store and streaming online.

MONDAY, March 19: Things to do in Carson City

CARSON CITY — Beginning Sunday, March 18, the Nevada Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin overnight single lane closures as part of an ongoing project to install a traffic signal on U.S. 395 at Airport Road and improve other highway intersections in the Carson Valley.

Okay. This is one of the hardest weekend lists I’ve ever had to do. This dump of snow has cancelled some events, but others are in full force. Best I can tell, St. Patrick’s Day parties are not deterred by a little snowfall. There will be no parade in Virginia City, but the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fest is on. Head to downtown Carson for more green beer, Irish music, and corned beef and cabbage than you’ll know what to do with.

SATURDAY: St. Patrick’s Day

Winter may be showing up fashionably late, but she was certain to make an entrance. Schools in Carson City are closed due to the snowfall we received last night, but Carson Valley and Lyon County schools will be open. For the kids of Youth Theater Carson City: the show must go on.
