Carson City weather: Flood Watch goes up for much of region

UPDATE: On Tuesday morning the National Weather Service issued a Flood Watch for much of the region including the greater Reno area, Carson City, Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe. Go here for the Flood Watch information.

With March now a memory, all attention weather wise this first week of April turns to a spring storm expected to arrive in the Carson City and Sierra region Friday that forecasters say will bring gusty winds, heavy rain and the potential for flooding along creeks, streams and rivers.

NDOT begins second season of Kingsbury Grade drainage enhancements

On Monday, April 2, the Nevada Department of Transportation will begin the second scheduled construction season of roadway drainage pipe improvements on Kingsbury Grade, State Route 207.

Muscle Powered, our local hiking, biking, and trail-building group, leads guided hikes and walks a few times every week, including two on Tuesdays. Don’t let spring break be an excuse not to use your noggin. Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras and DJ Trivia at Fox Brewpub are both open to all ages and free to play. You’ve only got a few days to see the Winter Art Show in the Nevada Artist Association Gallery; their new show, ‘Spring has Sprung,’ will open Sunday.

It won’t seem like it today, but spring is on the way. We’ll be seeing sunny days in the sixties by week’s end. If you’re looking for a way to entertain the kids, dollar days at our two bowling alleys make for a fun, yet inexpensive, outing. The Friends of the Carson City Library are hosting a week-long food drive. Bring your non-perishable donations to Browsers Corner Book Store and take a look around. You might find the perfect book for Spring Break.

The weekend has arrived, and it will be an exceptionally long one for the schoolkids of Carson City: spring break begins Monday. There’s a rumor of snowfall for this weekend, but it’s not expected to be too heavy in the valley. Don’t quote me on that, though, I’ve been wrong before. Break a leg to the Douglas students performing in ‘Game of Tiaras’ this weekend; the show sounds hilarious, but be warned, it’s not for kids. For a family friendly outing, check out Story Time with Suzie at the Nevada Railroad Museum, or photos with the Easter Bunny at PetSmart.

We aren’t expecting any rain today, but weather control is well above my pay-grade. The recent downpour filled a few reservoirs around town, including the one at the corner of Roop Street and Little Lane.

Parks and pathways closed: Carson City sees nearly 2 inches of rain since Wednesday

Carson City Public Works, Parks and Recreation personnel and emergency managers have been working on flood prone areas throughout Thursday and will continue to do so until the storm is over, officials said this afternoon.

It’s just unfortunate timing that today has been designated ‘Nevada Moves Day.’ With the heavy rain, it may not be the best time to try your hand at walking or biking to school. A break in the storm this afternoon will make for an easier trek home, but you can always take up the challenge after Spring break next week. The annual Father-Daughter Dance at Carson High is fast approaching, and today is your last chance for in-person ticket sales. Head to the Carson High office between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. if you’ve got cash in hand.

Rain ahead for Carson City region, high Sierra to see four or more feet of heavy, wet snow

A strong storm from the Pacific known as an "atmospheric river" will push through the Sierra and Carson City regions Wednesday through early Friday, bringing periods of gusty winds, heavy valley rain and heavy Sierra snow, according to the National Weather Service.

Single lane closures ahead on U.S. 395 through Carson Valley to install traffic signal

CARSON CITY — Beginning Sunday, March 18, the Nevada Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin overnight single lane closures as part of an ongoing project to install a traffic signal on U.S. 395 at Airport Road and improve other highway intersections in the Carson Valley.

Okay. This is one of the hardest weekend lists I’ve ever had to do. This dump of snow has cancelled some events, but others are in full force. Best I can tell, St. Patrick’s Day parties are not deterred by a little snowfall. There will be no parade in Virginia City, but the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fest is on. Head to downtown Carson for more green beer, Irish music, and corned beef and cabbage than you’ll know what to do with.
