The American Public Works Association has annually celebrated National Public Works Week since 1960. This week public works professionals throughout the nation, including Carson City, are being honored for the vital services they provide.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada State Prison Preservation Society will sponsor an educational lecture on the issues surrounding prison medical care by Dr. Karen Gedney. Dr. Gedney will also discuss her experiences in caring for inmates over a three decade career. The lecture will be presented February 17, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. in the Ormsby Room of the Carson City Sheriff’s Offices, 911 East Musser Street.

The very talented students in the Carson Middle School Jazz Band have been practicing up a storm to get ready for tonight’s joint performance with the Mile High Jazz Band. Their Jazz Extravaganza kicks off at the Carson City Community Center at 7 p.m. Swing by Firehouse Subs for dinner tonight and you’ll be helping the Carson/Douglas Relay for Life in addition to filling your tummy. CARSON CITY — History enthusiasts who missed November’s sold out Frances Humphrey Lecture on the future of Stewart Indian School have a second chance this Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Nevada State Museum.

Northern Nevada’s first big event of the season takes place on St. Patrick’s Day this year. The 27th annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry returns to historic Virginia City, Nev. on Saturday, March 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each year, more than 7,000 people fill the streets to have some tasty testes prepared by over a dozen cooks all competing to claim the winning title and bragging rights.

After training exercises last month by the Carson City Fire Department, the old Thurman Ranch House, a family and basque style steak house that closed in 2013, is being cleared out.

The building has been unoccupied since closing. Last month the Carson City Fire Department used it for fire training purposes.

The owners of the property, Tim and Joyce Smith, agreed to have the buildings taken down on the property, which is 0.76 acres, according to the property's Real Estate Agent Bruce Robertson.

A new senior center will be built in Fernley thanks to the William N. Pennington Foundation, which awarded Lyon County $3 million that was signed off Thursday by the Board of County Commissioners.

Carson City locals that frequent the downtown area may have noticed some silence on the hour instead of the bell chimes familiar ring at the Laxalt Building this past summer. The original Carillon — an electronic device that simulates tuned bell chimes — broke down after ringing on the hour since 1999.

The Carson City School District is pleased to report that all samples taken from water fountains and fixtures at school sites had lead levels well below the project Action Level for drinking water. The water quality threshold for lead in drinking water is expressed as an Action Level, which in this case is 20 micrograms per liter or higher (ug/L, also known as parts per billion).

Shaheen Beauchamp Builders has finished construction on what may be the first speculative warehouse building completed in Carson City in nearly a decade. The 28,500-square-foot building, located at 3320 Research Way, has one tenant already moving in and 10,000 square feet still available for lease. The building is completed and ready for quick occupancy.
