UPDATE 4:15PM From Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong: The Carson City Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office responded to two arson-related fires at the Foreman-Roberts House Museum over the weekend. The first fire was reported on Sunday morning at approximately 2:34 a.m., damaging primarily the east side of the structure. On Monday morning at approximately 4:29 a.m., another fire was reported, this time the origin site was located on the south side of the building. The two incidents have resulted in moderate damage to the building.

Lake Tahoe was at a crossroads in 1997. The lake’s famous water clarity, once measuring 100 feet, was declining year after year because of stormwater pollution from roads and developed areas and erosion from streams damaged by logging and cattle grazing.

A “C” corporation, one that files and pays its own tax, has a maximum tax rate today of 34 percent. That makes it profitable to move jobs and investments to other countries that have lower tax rates. Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval today signed Executive Order 2016-19, ordering all flags at the State Capitol and State public buildings and grounds to be flown at half-staff effective immediately and until Tuesday, July 12, 2016 as a mark of respect and in remembrance of the victims in Dallas, Texas.

A fire Saturday morning has destroyed several structures and burned 1.5 acres of vegetation east of Dayton in Stagecoach.

Central Lyon County Fire Protection District was called to the 5000 block of Pawnee in Stagecoach at 10:59 a.m. for a structure fire. Upon arrival units observed multiple out buildings and one residential structure on fire.

Three days of thrill-seeking, mountain biking adventure and plenty of capital city hospitality and entertainment will kick off the inaugural Carson City Off-Road Epic Ride series beginning Friday and lasting through the weekend.

Indian arts, crafts, food and dance take the stage June 17-19 at the 2016 Stewart Father’s Day Powwow in Carson City.

A diversified northern Nevada general contractor, the company was founded in 1986 in Carson City, Nevada starting with two brothers to now employing more than 29 and playing a role in some of the region’s most notable projects.

With Memorial Day weekend approaching and summer around the corner, public agencies in Nevada, California and around Lake Tahoe are urging residents and visitors to practice proper food storage and trash disposal when living in or visiting bear country.

Recently, an article was posted to Carson Now by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension promoting a spring plant sale fundraiser for The Greenhouse Project, located behind Carson High School.

“Every American city, whether it prides itself on its public sculptures or deep-dish pizza, on hot-air balloons or woolen jackets, on abundant trout streams or Greek architecture, needs to develop that identity, or if it has been allowed to escape, remember what it once was.”

That single sentence written by Robert E. Price, author of “The Bakersfield Sound” and award-winning Executive Editor of the newspaper Bakersfield Californian, struck a chord with me, for as we go forth with our “reimagining,” we still don’t have a clear vision/identity of who we were or who we are today.

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. This year, the theme acknowledges the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, which helps to stabilize neighborhoods and downtowns, contributes to public education, attracts investment, creates jobs, generates tax revenues, supports small business and affordable housing, and powers Nevada’s heritage tourism industry.

When people visit Tahoe for the first time, they marvel at the extraordinary natural landscape and fresh, clean air. At the same time, some are shocked at the dilapidated condition of the built environment: rundown buildings, crumbling infrastructure, and tired-looking development.

What a wonderful community we live in. Music, theater, hiking, biking, wining, dining, walking, TED-talking, animal loving, state governing, and so much more are available in our valley. The days are getting longer and there is so much in store for us in the coming weeks and months as we journey into summer. Take a good gander at my list of what’s going on in the Carson City area. It is always arranged chronologically by start time.

SATURDAY:

Former Western Nevada College student Anthony Arevalo welcomes the hunt of discovering art where few would look. The Northern Nevada artist collects discarded items in alleyways and dumpsters and gives them new life through his compositions.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of April 4-10, 2016. Work continues on the Downtown Corridor improvement project on Carson Street. For this week, traffic on North Carson Street will be one lane in each direction between William and 5th Street on the north bound side of the street.

The Carson City Redevelopment Authority is offering grants of up to $25,000 to improve the exterior façades of commercial buildings within the Redevelopment District. The grant can be used to make improvements to the exterior of existing commercial buildings, including signs. The grant requires the property owner to pay at least half the cost of the improvements. A total of $200,000 has been allocated to the program.

I should not have done it, but old habits, and common sense, die hard. Carson Street is the main drag through town, always was, always will be, for going between the north and south sides of town. Just look on the map. There are no through-street alternatives that run the length of town, from College Parkway to Clearview Drive; only fragments, most of which are residential.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Pinhole Properties, with artwork by artist Nancy Raven at the city’s Community Development Building [formerly the BRIC] located at 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. The building is open to the public daily, 8am – noon, 1-4pm. The free exhibition will remain in the building’s lobby through July 6, 2016.

These Ides of March have nothing to be wary of. Check out S.T.E.A.M. Night at Eagle Valley Middle School for hands on activities to learn from. Nevada Neighbors, Capital City Arts Initiative’s lecture series, features a talk by Paul Baker Prindle, Director and Curator of University Galleries, UNR’s art museum. Take an early spring stroll at Fuji Park during this week’s Carson City Parks and Recreation Easy Walk.
