William N. Pennington Foundation awards Lyon County $3 million for Fernley senior center
A new senior center will be built in Fernley thanks to the William N. Pennington Foundation, which awarded Lyon County $3 million that was signed off Thursday by the Board of County Commissioners.
The William N. Pennington Foundation awarded Lyon County the money to build a facility that will serve as a senior center and provide office space for the county's Human Services Department. The funding will cover nearly half of the cost to build the facility, said Lyon County Manager Jeff Page.
The facility is being built off Lois Lane behind the Fernley Depot. Lyon County and the City of Fernley are partnering in the development of this lot to build the Senior Center and a Community Center. Lyon County and the City of Fernley have approved a 50 year lease for the County’s portion of the property with the goal of parceling Lyon County’s section to Lyon County.
This building will replace the existing aging facility and provide the Human Services Department with much needed office space in Fernley and get Lyon County out of lease payments for existing offices, said Page.
The city and county will begin developing a joint use and maintenance agreements for both buildings and parking facilities after the first of the year. Lyon County anticipates construction starting quickly after the first of January.
According to the William N. Pennington Foundation mission statement, the Foundation supports organizations primarily in Nevada with an emphasis on Reno and northern Nevada. The focus is upon education and medicine to build a broad base to help people and families through difficult times.
