Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The American Cancer Society is hosting a poker run Saturday at Mills Park, and a free lacrosse clinic for kids ages 6-12 will be held at John L. Harvey Field. The Nevada Humane Society is virtually hosting its annual “Adopt a Duck” fundraiser for interested participants. UPDATE 144PM: Hot Springs Road has reopened to traffic in both directions following an all-clear by Southwest Gas. The cause of the crash into the building, which severed a gas line, is under investigation.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies responded Wednesday afternoon to a vehicle crash into an apartment complex building that has resulted in a gas leak.

CARSON CITY — On Monday, Gov. Steve Sisolak launched the new State of Nevada Climate Initiative to further advance Nevada’s efforts to address climate change.

When Will Truce and Jake Conway worked as high school teachers in Carson City, a colleague offered them some crystallized honey from his bee farm, and the two began experimenting with making mead, the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage brewed by fermenting honey with water and sometimes referred to as ‘honey wine.’

Nevada DMV will offer extended hours on weekdays but close Saturdays at its Reno and Las Vegas offices, officials announced Wednesday. DMV says the changes will offer more appointments while maintaining COVID-19 health and safety protocols. The plans do not affect Carson City and rural Nevada offices.

Nevada Builders Alliance, owner of the Bank Saloon building in Carson City, have announced that Mangia Tutto owner Richard Bragiel will be the new operator of the historic location.

The bar, which is scheduled to open in October 2020, has undergone extensive renovations since it was purchased by the Builders Alliance in 2018. Nevada Builders Alliance, the state’s largest construction trade association, has partnered with Heritage Bank of Nevada to complete a renovation of the historic building, formerly Jack’s Bar, in downtown Carson City.

The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum received approval of a grant from the Western States Arts Federation CARES Act Fund in the amount of $20,000.

A local parent has started a petition to open Carson City schools in August and will present the petition at the Tuesday, July 14 meeting of the Carson City School District Board of Trustees.

Lawmakers began the task of filling the $1.2 billion hole in the state’s budget on Wednesday as they kicked off their special session with a litany of budget and agency briefings throughout the day.

CARSON CITY — By executive order, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Nevada to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and state public buildings and grounds from sunrise until sunset on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 as a mark of solemn respect and in remembrance of Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Ben Jenkins, whose funeral is being held today in Elko.

In a letter distributed to all students, families, employees and community members, Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes announced that due to the emergency directives from the Office of the Governor, schools within the District cannot reopen in normal fashion to begin the 2020-2021 school year.

UPDATE: The Poeville Fire is burning in grass and brush on the eastside of Peavine Mountain northwest of Reno, Nevada. At 9 p.m., the fire was estimated at 1,500 acres and zero percent contained. Local, state, county, and federal firefighters are on scene.

UPDATE 6:04 p.m.: 250 personnel from multiple agencies including the Carson City Fire Department are on scene battling the fire. The acreage is estimated at 650 acres.

A new local custom automotive shop is set to open in Carson City to help personalize your vehicle.

Carson Built Customs, located at 220 E. William St., specializes in custom powder coatings, metal works, CNC fabrication as well as custom installations for automobiles and motorcycles. No exact date has been set for when the business opens. Thomas Purnal, owner of Carson Built Customs, said he plans on opening to the public by mid-July.

The Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) has announced that seven communities in Nevada have been recognized by Main Street America for their demonstrated commitment to comprehensive commercial district revitalization and proven track record of successfully applying the Main Street ApproachTM.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles reopened its branch offices in the Silver State including Carson City and Reno, which saw brisk business Monday.

CARSON CITY — Beginning Monday, June 15, 2020, the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles will reopen all branch offices in the Silver State.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles is preparing to reopen after shutting down on March 16, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a reopening date has not been set. All full-service DMV offices remain closed.

The Governor issued the Guidelines and Protocols for Individuals and Businesses and Emergency Directive 18 Phase One Reopening Plan.

Based upon these directives Lyon County will implement the following by no later than 5:00 PM May 11, 2020.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Education released Wednesday its Path Forward Plan – Responding to COVID-19 to support schools and districts in continuing to provide educational opportunities to all students.

About 75 percent of suspected child abuse and neglect reports in Nevada are made by mandated reporters. In March 2020, Nevada saw a 14 percent decrease in suspected child abuse and neglect reports which includes a 46 percent decrease in reports made by educational personnel.

Gov. Steve Sisolak announced Tuesday that Nevada school buildings will remain closed through the end of the 2019-20 school year. Districts and charter schools with approved Emergency Programs of Distance Education are expected to continue to offer learning opportunities to all students through the previously scheduled end of the school year as determined by local calendars.

Happening now through April 25 is National Library Week, a time to highlight the valuable role libraries, librarians and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. University of Nevada, Reno has implemented plans, having closed for the next 30 days due to the coronavirus pandemic and the Nevada governor's procedures for all schools, state colleges and non-essential employees and school operations.

The Carson City School District recognizes the situation regarding COVID-19 is very fluid, with conditions changing rapidly. Therefore, the following actions are being taken to best meet Governor Sisolak’s expectations in unprecedented circumstances.

The Lyon County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a Declaration of Emergency through Resolution 20-05 and a meeting Monday afternoon, according to County Manager Jeff Page.

There was one person who poke against the resolution. Lyon County staff will now begin implementing procedures to address the declaration.
