Local business Carson Built Customs set to open in Carson City
A new local custom automotive shop is set to open in Carson City to help personalize your vehicle.
Carson Built Customs, located at 220 E. William St., specializes in custom powder coatings, metal works, CNC fabrication as well as custom installations for automobiles and motorcycles. No exact date has been set for when the business opens. Thomas Purnal, owner of Carson Built Customs, said he plans on opening to the public by mid-July.
“I’m really excited to get everything started,” Purnal said. “We’re still in the process of getting everything open and up and running. … I think there’s a big demand for powder coating and custom metal works, so we’re in the process of getting it ready to go.”
When the business opens, more than 15,000 powder coating colors will be available for customers to choose from. Automobiles and motorcycles of all years and models can get a fresh new coat with a glossy finish.
“I love taking something that’s old and rusty and turning into a shiny object that’s built to last,” he said. “It’s those types of things that made me want to start this business in the first place.”
Born and raised in South Lake Tahoe, Purnal has some local ties to the Carson City area. He moved to Carson City in 2017 and has worked in the powder coating industry since 2000. Purnal also has manufactured security doors to add his expertise.
When the time came for a custom automotive shop, Purnal jumped at the opportunity to put a modern twist in the heart of a historic town.
“I have lived in the area for a long time,” Purnal said. “This location has a lot of history and I want to see these older buildings with a new purpose. I thought this was a perfect spot for that to happen.”
Along with powder coatings, Carson Built Customs creates custom metal signs and monograms of all shapes and sizes. A storefront area inside the shop will have several custom works made from metal, ceramics and other materials up for sale.
“That’s one aspect about this location that most industrial locations don’t have,” Purnal said. “Having a storefront location inside the shop gives us the capability of producing the product in house.”
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted local businesses across the globe. To help keep the safety of the community intact, Purnal said custom-made signs will be available online and picked up via curbside delivery. Facemasks will be mandatory when people enter the shop to look at colors and other coating options.
“We’re trying to live up to what we’re trying to do, and that’s keeping all of us safe,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing lots of happy people when we get started.”
Carson Built Customs is set to open in the near future. Their business hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Follow their Facebook page for more information or call at (775)-434-7315.
