16th annual Jazz and Beyond Carson City Musical Festival kicks off in state capital

The 16th annual Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival took over a sunny Friday evening in the state capital.

A blend of smooth jazz music combined with special art exhibits, demonstrations and art sales brought dozens of attendees to the Bliss and Governor's Mansions.

Carson City's newest murals selected for Empire Elementary wall

Two artists have been selected to design and install murals on a two-sided wall near Empire Elementary School on La Loma Drive, under the theme “Reach for the Stars.”

The winning artists are Bill Louis and Bryce Chisholm, both from the Reno/Sparks area.

Jazz festival, history talks, music and more: Carson City region lined up for eventful weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region to help the next three days breeze by, including the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival, Carson City Library’s End of Summer Learning Challenge, history talks at Mormon Station Park, train rides in Virginia City, a sushi cooking class at Sierra Chef on Sunday and more!

My Thousand Words Book Sculptures: Trees, Ornaments and More

Did you ever want to create really cool things out of books? Once read, they sit on a shelf and start to collect dust. Why not learn what Debbie and Rachael of “My Thousand Words” book sculptures and make them into beautiful art!

This course will teach you to make some amazing holiday creations out of books, including trees and ornaments. You'll even learn how to light up your creations! In addition to the $25 registration fee, a $40 supply fee is due to the instructor at the start of the course.

Carson City, Tonopah partner for 10-month ‘Basin to Range’ Art Exchange program

On Aug. 5, Carson City’s Mark Salinas and Tonopah’s Kat Galli launched a 10-month collaborative project as part of the Nevada Art Council’s Basin to Range project, which pairs urban and rural entities to “support long-term structural change in communities across Nevada through strategic planning, community engagement, and artistic design.”

The 16th Annual Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music and Art Festival kicks off Friday at Bliss Mansion, 608 Elizabeth Street from 4 to 6 p.m., and continues that evening at the Governor’s Mansion, directly across Mountain Street. Calling all creative adventurers! Join the Parks, Rec & Open Space Dept. on the first Interpretive Program devoted to drawing and hiking. If you're a skilled artist or a novice, bring your sketchbook out to Kings Canyon and learn different techniques to be able to portray your the natural environment into a visual art.

Bring your own sketchbook and drawing utensil if you have it, but we will also have paper and pens for folks as well. Please make sure to wear close-toed shoes and bring plenty of water & sun protection. See you there!

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. – The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada hosts the third annual Summer Soiree fundraiser to help build a clubhouse for Carson Valley members, Sunday, Aug. 11, at 4 p.m. in Genoa.

Currently, the Club activities are hosted at Pau Wa Lu Middle School, but due to school events and availability of classrooms, there are many limitations to what the Club can provide to the youth of Carson Valley without having its own location.

Children's Museum of Northern Nevada receives grant award for STEM improvements

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada recently received a $5,000 grant award from the Robert S. and Dorothy Keyser Foundation for the acquisition of STEM themed exhibits and enhancements for the facility's science room.

UPDATE: There's a star party late Monday night into Tuesday morning hosted by Carson City Parks and Recreation and Open Space. For summer’s most visible meteor showers, join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space Department at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory for some late night, educational fun. No pre-registration necessary. Please wear close-toed shoes and bring water for night hiking from the Observatory. Head lamps and flashlights are allowed. This upcoming Monday is the Aquariids Viewing Party starting at 12:00 a.m. Tuesday (technically Monday night).
