Flea from chipmunk at Fallen Leaf Lake tests positive for plague

The flea was sampled from one of three rodents trapped in the Fallen Leaf Campground area during routine plague surveillance May 18, 2016.

UNR seismology lab: Saturday's magnitude 3.9 one of 300 earthquakes near Gerlach
Submitted by editor on Tue, 05/17/2016 - 10:32amThe Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno reported a magnitude 3.9 earthquake located near the communities of Gerlach and Empire, about 75 miles north of Reno. The earthquake occurred at 7:20 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016. The magnitude 3.9 is the largest of just over 300 earthquakes that have been located in the area since April 20.
Bear activity seen in south Carson City near Fuji Park

Carson City staff spotted the bears in the Clear Creek area across from Vista Grande Boulevard west of Fuji Park. We would like to warn park visitors that bears might be attracted to the park because of food and trash.

Nevada's initial March unemployment insurance claims see decrease

The 12-month average, which best shows the overall trend in claims, fell to 12,343, the lowest value for this measure since mid-2007.

Becoming Teacher of the Year is no easy task at Carson High School. With 104 teachers, not including other staff members, the CHS Teacher of the Year Award is an accomplishment most teachers will never receive, so winning an award like this required a great many people to say a great thing or two about Scott Vickrey.

Bistro at Tahoe Ridge still closed, winery open

The bistro closed right after Christmas 2015, and has not reopened. A sign on the front doors of the restaurant stated the bistro was temporarily closed for renovations, and winery employees last month reported the bar area of the bistro was scheduled for a major remodel.
Commerce and rail center in Lyon, Churchill counties on track for development

The Gateway Commerce Center project will be built near Hazen, Nev. on U.S. Highway 50 Alternate, according to a joint announcement by Northern Nevada Development Authority, Gateway Commerce Center LLC and Watco Companies, LLC.
