Wind topples tree, blocks lane of traffic on North Carson Street
Gusting winds uprooted a tree on North Carson Street in Carson City late Monday morning, blocking one lane of traffic.
The large pine blew over at around 11:40 a.m., causing traffic to back up. The tree will have to be cut up and the road lane is expected to be blocked for at least an hour. Carson City Fire Department has responded and Carson City sheriff's deputies are redirecting traffic.
Gusty winds are blowing into the Carson City region, prompting a Wind Advisory from the National Weather Service.
Winds will continue to increase, becoming the strongest by Monday afternoon and evening. Winds are from the southwest 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 55 mph. In wind prone areas, gusts could be as high as 60 mph to 70 mph. The highest winds are being reported in Washoe Valley and the North valleys near Highway 395.
The weather service advises homeowners to secure outdoor furniture and holiday decorations.
For motorists traveling through the Sierra, there is a Winter Storm Warning in effect now until 10 a.m. Tuesday. Snow accumulations could be from 1 to 3 feet above 7,000 feet. Totals will vary below 7,000 feet due to snow level fluctuations. The highest amounts will be west of Highway 89. Snow levels are expected to be from 5,500 to 6,500 feet.
