Carson City Emergency Management offers storm preparation suggestions
With a strong storm likely to hit the region on Thursday and Friday, Carson City Emergency Management is reminding citizens of importance of being prepared. It’s that time of year when winter weather can have severe impacts in Northern Nevada and we encourage everyone to get ready.
What you need to know:
Prepare your home:
• Listen to weather forecasts.
• Check your emergency supplies (water, flashlights, extra batteries, no-cook food, crackers, etc)
• Be ready for a minimum of 72 hours without heat or electricity.
• Install a smoke detector and a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector.
• Secure anything outdoors, including decorations, for high winds.
• Bring your pets indoors during the winter.
• Have a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio
Prepare your car:
• Avoid dangerous winter travel problems by planning ahead.
• Keep extra blankets, water, snacks and first aid kit
• Carry tire chains.
• Keep the gas tank near full.
As storms move into our area Carson City will closely monitor forecasts detailing winds, rain, and snow on City streets. Public Works crews will be working in 12-hours shifts, rotating personnel to provide 24 hour-a-day snow and debris removal. For information on snow-plow routes, please visit the Carson City website at http://carson.org.
While precipitation is welcome in our region, it’s important for citizens to remember high winds, rain, and heavy snow can knock out power and communication services and make the roads dangerous. Carson City is encouraging citizens to be prepared.
